MARILYN JOAN BRODEUR

(née MOFFAT)

July 15, 1939 - January 10, 2024

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear wife, Mom, and Grandma, Marilyn Brodeur, on January 10th, 2024.

Marilyn is survived by her loving husband and soulmate of 62 years Lucien (Lou) Brodeur. Her children Karen Brodeur Trotter (Sean), Cheryl Pilek (Russell) and Loralei Douglas (Murray), her grandsons Keenan, Aidan (Emma), Owen, Thomas and granddaughter Cailin; siblings Barbara Thompson (Bill), Heather Moffat-Newman (Andrew) and Jim Moffat (Robbyn); as well as many special in-laws and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Edith and James Moffat, as well as brother Bruce Moffat (Edna).

Mom was born and raised in Winnipeg. She completed her studies at Glenlawn Collegiate and went on to work at Canadian National Rail’s telecommunications office. It was there that Mom met the love of her life in 1958. Mom showed interest in Dad by sending him a note on the message belt that ran between the two areas that they worked in. Dad arranged a double date with a friend of his and another girl from work. Mom wasn’t sure if Dad had asked her to accompany him or if he had invited his friend along as a date for Mom. When the guys arrived to pick up the girls, Mom made sure she reached the car first and got into the front seat to sit beside Dad. They fell in love and were married at St Boniface Basilica in 1961. They lived in St Vital and St Boniface before moving to Transcona.

Mom and Dad built a beautiful life together and had 3 girls who were their pride and joy. Mom made her family the top priority, created a loving home and was always there for friends and family. Mom and Dad were always busy and active but also had time for fun, relaxation and quality time with family.

Our childhood years were filled with family camping trips and fun with extended family. Mom and Dad bought property at Traverse Bay and built their own cottage. This was a very special, loving place where the family gathered, and it later became Mom and Dad’s home. They made many friends at Victoria Beach Seniors Scene, and also spent winters in Arizona and Texas where they made many more close friends.

Mom had many talents. She was an avid cook, baker, gardener, seamstress, quilter, made and painted wooden crafts, and created stained glass pieces.  Music always brought a smile to Mom’s face and she loved to dance. She had an amazing sense of humour that developed thanks to her relationship with Dad. He loves to joke around and give good-natured ribbing to people. Mom wasn’t used to this at first, but she enjoyed it and their interactions and kidding around led to her sense of humour that we all loved.

Mom had a heart of gold. She was always kind, generous and full of compliments. She was a thoughtful woman who had precious wisdom. Mom loved to hear everything we shared with her and treasured time with family. She always made time to sit and listen, support, encourage and give you her undivided attention.

Mom spent the last ten months at Action Marguerite in St Boniface where she became a beloved resident to staff. Mom became known for her sense of humour, hugs, love of dancing, calling everyone “honey, honey” and sharing her wisdom. The family wishes to offer huge thanks to staff there who provided excellent and loving care to our Mom.

We are blessed and grateful to have had so many precious years with Mom in our lives. We wish there had been many more, it never would have been enough. But as Mom always said, “Never goodbye, only so long”. So long Mom, until we meet again we keep you close in our hearts…

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimers Society.

A private service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 17. The service will also be shared virtually, which you can watch by clicking this link.

Marilyn's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Mr Brodeur, so sorry for the loss of your beautiful wife. It's evident from the service eulogies and the tribute video that you and Mrs Brodeur created a fun and nurturing home for your family and friends ❤  Thank you for fostering a love for camping with your girls as that is how we met two of your daughters and their families.  Karen & Loralei - you both absorbed a lot of positive qualities from your mom as you exude kindness, host friends and family for fun game nights at your "homes" (aka campsites) and offer an ear/good advice for those in need. Your mom will clearly be missed by all who had the honor to know her, condolences to all of you ❤

We aways enjoyed  the family gatherings and events with Marilyn and Lou, the girls and their family’s throughout the years. Marilyn was a kind and sincere lady and I enjoyed the our chats about the children and grandchildren like a proud mom and grandma. I was very sorry to hear about her illness. My sincere sympathies during this very sad time. Thinking of you all. ❤

I am so grateful to have gotten to spend time with her in the last few months. As much as she “wasn’t herself” she was totally herself. She was proud, poised, still upheld her fashion sense and shared her dry wit and sense of humour. Her reaction to seeing me was heart warming to me as she holds a special place in my heart. My sincere sympathies to Uncle Lou, Karen, Cheryl, Loralei and all of your families. ❤ She will be missed!

My heart breaks to hear of this news.  Our family had the distinct pleasure of being neighbours with Marilyn and her wonderful family on Laurentia Bay during the 1980s.  Cheryl, Karen and Loralei, and to all the extended members of your family we are so sorry for your loss. Your mother was a kind person who I remember fondly as someone who made our lives a little brighter with her infectious laugh.  Definitely my favourite neighbors ever.  Please know that you are in our thoughts through this difficult period.

Marilyn and Lou were  loved  by their fellow wintertexans at La Floresta RV Park, in Mercedes, Texas, where they wintered for many seasons. Through them, we got to know and love their family, too. I still treasure those memories, and newer ones from my continued visits with them in Winnipeg.  I thanked Marilyn many times for sharing her sweet granddaughter, Cailin, with me as one of my own.  Special  hugs to Lou and Loralei for the heartbreak  they have had these past months while lovingly working to see that she had the care she needed.  And to Murray and Cailin for supporting them always.

Toutes mes sympaties à Lucien et à sa famille. Étant déménagé à Gatineau en 1969, je n'ai pas eu l'occasion de revoir Lucien, un bon ami de quelques années du collège. Chaleureuses sympaties cher ami. Colette et Hubert Mangin

I have a lot of wonderful memories about Aunt Marilyn but one that came back to me as soon as I heard of her passing was how I used to visit her when she worked at the clothing store in Transcona.  I was about 12 or 13 and I thought she was so cool. She was always in fashion and made me feel welcome and special when I came in to see her. We'll miss you Aunt Marilyn.  Love you.
