DONALD ANGUS BROWN

October 29, 1942 – May 3, 2026

Donald Angus Brown, known by many as "Brownie", died at the age of 83 in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 3rd, 2026.

Don is survived by his niece and nephews, Maggie, Andrew and Chris; and grandnephews, Owen and Wil.

He was predeceased by his brother Fred; and his parents, Frederick and Anne Brown.

While Fred and his family moved frequently across the country, they kept in touch with Donald through phone calls, letters and the occasional visit. We will remember the excitement of opening Uncle Donald's Christmas presents and hearing stories about the hijinks he and our father got up to as youngsters, especially at the lake where our grandparents ran a tourist business and store.

But the people who knew Don best were those in his large circle of friends in Winnipeg.

Don began his career with the City of Winnipeg as the Parks and Recreation Coordinator at the Elmwood Community Centre. After a short time, he transferred to the Northwood Community Centre in 1971, where he continued his dedicated service. Don worked for the City of Winnipeg for 30 years before retiring in 1997.

Don was a kind and humble man who quietly stepped in to help others. He valued his independence, often keeping to himself, yet was always ready to lend a hand when needed. He never sought recognition, choosing instead to simply do what needed to be done.

For 50 years, Don called Willow Park Housing Co-op home. He truly embraced the community, and neighbours will remember him fondly for sitting outside, greeting everyone who passed by with a friendly hello.

Don cherished time spent at his cottage at Lee River, where he brought people together by organizing games for children, as well as pig roasts and horseshoe tournaments for adults. Many treasured memories were made there with family and friends.

An avid walker, Don was known for his daily 10-kilometre walks. Friends and neighbours would often honk and wave as they passed him, amazed by his dedication. He continued his walks even as his health began to decline.

Don’s commitment to community extended through his volunteer work with the Knights of Columbus, the Red River Exhibition, and the Junior Winter Games. He also enjoyed participating in Winnipeg’s film community, auditioning for roles as an extra whenever productions came to the city.

His real passion was managing hockey teams. For 25 years, he managed “AA” and “AAA” boys’ hockey teams, working closely with players and their families. Under his leadership, teams achieved four city championships at the “AA” level, and he proudly participated in the world-renowned Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

One of Don's greatest accomplishments was running the Billy Mosienko Christmas Hockey Tournament for 25 years. He was in charge of organizing all the Winnipeg teams and those from out of town, to play at the best "AA" tournament around. He also helped organize the arena's name change from the Keewatin Hockey Arena to the Billy Mosienko Hockey Arena.

Don also hosted the 25th anniversary dinner of the Billy Mosienko Christmas Hockey Tournament, bringing in special guest Dennis Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks as a guest speaker. Organizing these types of events could only be done by a special person and Don was that guy.

Above all, Don will be remembered as a generous, community-minded individual whose quiet contributions made a lasting impact on so many lives. He will always be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.

No service is planned at this time, though the family hopes to hold a gathering in the future for those who knew Don. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the United Way of Winnipeg at https://unitedwaywinnipeg.ca
