RUTH BROWN

(née LEASK)

Ruth Brown (Leask) of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed on December 29th in the company of family.

She was the last remaining of 17 children born to Harold and Mattie Leask of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Ruth was fiercely proud of being from Flin Flon and regularly attended the monthly Flin Flon reunion meetings in Winnipeg. Ruth is survived by her son Tom and his wife Nura along with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was fascinated by US politics and watched hours upon hours of news channel coverage. One of Ruth’s strongest traits was her tenacity. She did not have a lot of hobbies, but what she did, she committed 200%. In the mid eighties, she raised over $80,000 for the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary by selling teddy bears dressed up as Canada Post letter carriers. When her sister, Gail, introduced her to the NBA, she quickly developed a passion for the Toronto Raptors. She enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, which was a welcome break from the news channels.

That passion also manifested itself in Ruth’s letter writing campaigns. It did not matter if it was civic, provincial, or federal issues – if she had a concern – someone’s getting a letter or two or three.

We are extremely grateful for her “adopted family” in Winnipeg, Dean, Cheri, Derek and Katie Wilson. They, along with other dear friends, have cared for her over the past several years. There are no words for how much you meant to Ruth and continue to mean to us. May you be richly blessed for your kindness.

The family would also like to thank the amazing nurses, assistants and support staff from Concordia Hospital that took care of her in her final days.

In honor of Ruth’s wishes, there will be no memorial service.

Tom, I am so sorry to hear about your Mom.  I remember our many visits together when you were living in the Seattle area and we could visit back and forth.  She looks like such a proud Gramma.  I loved looking at the video that is shared above.  Every time I go through that SeaTac airport I think of your Mom.  Your cousin Barb - Victoria BC

My sincere condolences Tom & family,  on the loss of your mom & grandmother, Ruth. For many years, Ruth was on the phoning committee & was part of the organizing team for the Flin Flon luncheons held in the spring & fall at The Viscount Gort Hotel. I chaired that group for 10 of those years & Ruth was dedicated to bringing former & current residents of our hometown together. We will miss her terribly. ❤️🙏🏻❤️

So, so sorry to hear of Ruth's passing.  Ruth was a dear friend to my mother, Kathy, and to all of our family.  We spent many a Mother's Day and Christmas together as her family was in Ottawa.  She was smart, kind, funny, and always a hoot to be around.  She spoke often, with pride, of her son Tom and grandson Jesse.  Sadly, after Kathy's passing late last year we lost touch with Ruth and now she is gone.  Another solemn reminder that life is too short.  Our entire family sends our sincere thoughts and condolences to you all.   Cheryl Choptain and Adrian Balkaran " src="blob:https://app.commentsplugin.com/db58942f-e76c-4f61-9a9b-7c7b2bef60ee" alt="PastedGraphic-1.tiff" apple-inline="yes" apple-width="yes" apple-height="yes" class="Apple-web-attachment Singleton" style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica; opacity: 1;"> " src="blob:https://app.commentsplugin.com/015df2ee-46c2-483a-a349-afbddff1204a" alt="PastedGraphic-2.tiff" apple-inline="yes" apple-width="yes" apple-height="yes" class="Apple-web-attachment Singleton" style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica; opacity: 1;">

As a dear friend of my late mother-in-law (Jane Thomson), Ruth truly became part of our extended family.  For a couple of decades, we spent virtually every Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving together, not to mention numerous picnics, Rainbow Stage shows, BBQs on Ruth’s lovely deck, etc.  Of course, Panda and then Murphy, her beloved doggies were often joyfully included.  With love, we say Farewell Ruth … we will miss your warmth, generosity, humour and passion.

Tom your mom will always hold a special place in my heart. She was a powerhouse of a woman who respectfully and with grace spoke her mind. I always liked that piece of  your mom. Over the years she and my mom stayed in touch and continued a friendship.  Take pride in knowing she was a fiercely loving person and momma bear. 🤗❤️

Aunt Ruth was a spirited, caring person. She was a wonderful daughter, trusting sister, loving Mother & an advocate for many when they needed it. Altho we lost touch over the years I always think of her very fondly. My condolences Tom & family.

a great a great tribute to a great lady. As a fellow Flin Floner, I knew her and the family. I also worked with Transair in her time there. Had the opportunity to visit with Ruth in the Canada POST days in Calgary. All were great memories of a special lady. Our Thoughts are with you.

Ruth was my next door neighbour for 18 years and watched me grow up. She was funny, smart, and the best neighbour ever. She always had cookies for me and was always so nice, even when I threw parties and kept her up all night!

Ruth was my Mom and Dads neighbor for years. My Mom was basically housebound and Ruth provided her with years of friendship and good company. Ruth, I thank you for all that time you spent with my Mom. To the family, I am sorry for your loss.❤

What a beautiful tribute to your mom Tom. And what a beautiful picture! Tenacity....a spark...and when I saw her, I genuinely felt she was happy to see me.  Pretty neat woman. Thanks for sharing her with your Ottawa friends.

My deepest condolences to Ruth's Family. I knew Ruth from the FF Luncheons and despite the age difference, she and I became close friends of which she !!!She was already good friends of my parents from FF and the luncheons and I made the circle complete. When Ruth was no longer able to continue her duties with the luncheon, I took over her phone list and had the pleasure of calling her to notify and of course have a chat and catch up. Once she was unable to attend I continued to call just to say Hi and maybe give her some hometown news that she may have missed. She was a warm and caring person and made sure everyone was looked after before she herself could enjoy. We will miss her dearly. Rest Easy Ruth, you are loved,  Steve, Lavinia !!!!!❤❤
