DENIS EUGENE BRUNETTE

June 21, 1946 - August 18, 2021

Peacefully on August 18, 2021, Denis passed away at Actionmarguerite nursing home, at the age of 75.

He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Shirley; daughter Sandra (Gary); son Jason; step-son Garett (Arleen); grandchildren Kristin and Gavin; great-grandson Dalton; sisters, Sr. Lucille, Irene, Yvette, Sr. Agnes, and Lise; brother Henri (Joan); as well as sister-in-law Mary. Denis was predeceased by his parents; sister Sr. Therese; and brothers, Rene, Marcel, Maurice, Paul, and Leon who will be waiting to greet their baby brother again.

Denis started working at Safeway in the produce department and finished his 39-year career as the warehouse supervisor. Whether professional or recreational, Denis took pride in a job well done. After his retirement he enjoyed spending time puttering in his workshop, working in the garden with Shirley, spending time with family, and playing dominoes with friends. Denis overcame many health challenges: Polio, a cardiac bypass, Parkinson's, and a kidney transplant (lovingly donated from his son) with a determined spirit and an absolute knowing that someone was watching over him.

Our hearts are heavy but will lighten knowing that he will be watching over us until we see him again. The family would like to thank the staff at Actionmarguerite St. Vital and the physicians who cared for him. A private service will be held by family.

In keeping with Denis' wishes, cremation has taken place. A private service will be held by family at a later date. In the meantime, the family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

We were saddened to hear of Uncle Denis' passing. We didn't see him often but when we did he always liked to joke around.  I remember when he was a teenager I guess he always had his hockey stick in the trunk of his car all the time and he would come and play hockey with us on the Seine River in Lorette.  Our condolences to Shirley and family.   Real and Sheila

Unfortunately, I did not know Uncle Denis as well as the rest of the family but he did leave us with many memories. When I was much younger he did visit my family ( my dad was his brother, Paul) several times in the states. We, too, visited and he was thrilled to show us around.   He was always full of life, had the most beautiful smile and he meant the world to me/us.  On one of his visits he left me a note wrapped  around a $20.00 Canadian bill which said, Debbie, The $20 Canadian is from your Uncle Denis.  Try and keep it. It may be worth more money in a few years.  If you get really desperate SPEND it. Write us sometimes.  Well, fortunately I never got desperate, so after many, many years,  I still have the $20 and the handwritten note.  ❤ something I have always treasured. Uncle Denis, you will be so missed but you'll live on in our memories and in our  hearts.

My favourite memory of Uncle Denis was our time together playing cards, dominoes and Sequence with my grandparents. Frequent visits and stopping in for lunch always came with great conversation and some laughs. It sure was a gift living at my grandparents and getting to know Uncle Denis so well.  His kindness and loving nature had an impact on me. I send my love and condolences to Aunt Shirley and the extended family. I know my grandpa is already teasing Uncle Denis up in heaven.  He will be missed.😇💙

My Uncle Denis will be missed very much by me, his niece Jacqueline, and my family. I love him. He was so much like his brother Marcel, my dad. He loved family. He was proud. He was determined. His smile was genuine and contributed to the handsome man he was. His family in heaven has him now. Love you Uncle Denis.❤

My condolences to Shirley and the Brunette family. Like usual, we never get to visit family enough. Uncle Denis got me my first job  at Safeway which was a very good start for me. Uncle Denis must've had a permanent smile because I've never seen him without one. The last time we talked, we talked about getting together to play cards. Another missed opportunity.  Robert and Nicole

My Uncle Denis.  How you will be missed.  Your great smile, your kind, considerate and playful personality.  Uncle Denis looked a lot like my Dad (his older brother Marcel), and after Dad passed away, it was very heart-warming to visit with Uncle Denis and see such familiar features.  Uncle Denis and I shared a love of garden tomatoes...and in the last several years when he no longer grew his own, I loved to share mine with him (only the big ones, and only the ones ripe enough for the skins to be removed!).   I have attached a photo of Uncle Denis and Dad taken in 2013 (or 2014) in the town of St. Joseph where they grew up.  The two of them were fooling around, having fun as usual.  In this photo they had switched hats and both thought they were quite hilarious - and so did I!  This photo will be my special memory of Uncle Denis - playing around with his big brother.  ❤

Denis always had an enthusiasm for playing cards and a certain look when holding a good hand.  It’s a good thing he didn’t play poker professionally  because his poker face was terrible (as evident by this picture).  While he liked to win it was more important that everyone had fun and I suspect sometimes Denis would deliberately throw a hand just to give everyone a laugh.     Thank you for the lifetime of laughs.
