EVELYN LORRAINE BURTON

September 7, 1931 - January 28, 2023

Mom’s travel date to Somewhere over the Rainbow occurred on January 28, 2023.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill. She is survived by her three children, Jay Rodgers (Nicole), Jock Rodgers (Sharon), and Lendre Kearns (King); grandchildren, Alexia and Dustin (Amy); as well as Bill’s family.

Mom and Bill were the consummate hosts, whether at the Cabin on Rush Bay or at the house in Fort Garry .The Christmas dinners and the Canada Day pool parties are legendary. Mom’s brother Len and his friend Jack often drove in from Edmonton for the Canada Day celebrations, with Jack invariably adding colour to the proceedings. Amazingly. Mom and Bill kept up with all the chores and maintenance of both the house and cabin, well into their 80’s, often eschewing offers of help from Family members.

They were also known for their generosity, donating to many charities. They had a number of pets and were lovers of all animals. Accordingly, should anyone wish to make a donation in memory, please consider the Winnipeg Humane Society or a Pet Shelter.

At Mom’s request, no formal service will be held. A private get together will be held at a later date, featuring her favorite Dixieland Jazz.

Lorraine's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

My sincere thoughts to all of the family.  She is now at peace with her Bill.  We grew up together  in Transcona. When Lori lost her Mom (at such an early age) my Mom kind of adopted Lori as a second daughter. I remember the night Lois and Lori entertained at Lori's home with a bridal shower for me and when we walked around to the backyard  there was Grant covered with measles waving out the window. In 1954 I married and moved to Torrance California (a suburb of Los Angeles).    Each year while my Mom was alive I visited Winnipeg and many times Lori left a box of her delicious baking at the hotel and one Christmas when I stayed home she shipped a lovely box of her "goodies". Of course we always managed to donate a few dollars to the Casino. Each one of her children were very lucky to enjoy her during her life. I would appreciate a message as to where she has been laid to rest.

I am so sad that this magical lady is no longer shining her brightness in the world.  I still remember one of the first nights I met her and listening to her talk about a square-headed neighbour.  I felt so bad that their heads were square until Jay explained it to me.  Even as time has passed and things have changed, every time I went back to Winnipeg I was welcomed with open arms to visit for hours and hear the wonderful stories of the past and present.  She was like another mom to me.  ( and in fact an amazing Mom-in-law) She was instrumental in supporting and helping to raise our son Dustin.   Dustin toilet training she would gladly put cheerios in the toilet for him to aim at.   Canada Day parties were infamous and if you were not invited you missed a great day, and yet if you showed up, there is no way she would let you leave without being a part of the celebration.  In fact, every event of every year she poured her heart into to make it special for everyone.  Such a giving, caring, loving person.  Oh and pity the soul who got on her bad side, you will be schooled like whipflash and then, as quick as a blink, she would tell you, 'now let's move on'.   And can you imagine the hundreds upon hundreds and thousands of meals she has lovingly prepared?  Oh my gosh!! She would never hesitate to set another plate and there are dozens of people out there that know she has done this time and time again.   Such a beautiful lady, Lorraine, Gram, Mom2. I miss you so much and cry and I am thankful for the beautiful memories you have given me and everyone around you xoxo Keri

Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss of Lorraine. Thinking and Remembering Lorraine; a lovely person who left a trail of lovely memories. Reminiscing about the fun times our Brewery group enjoyed at company functions, parties and celebrations with Lorraine and Bill.    We all tried to keep pace with Lorraine as she unreservedly led the chorus while Marie Beatty so magically played well-known melodies on the piano.    Lorraine's vibrant and joyful spirit will always be cherished. Authentic, inclusive, empowered and so much fun, Lorraine lit up every room she walked into. With warm thoughts and care, Kerry Scarsbrook Co-worker of Lorraine and Bill

Lorraine was happiest when entertaining her beloved family & friends.  She was truly an amazing hostess, always making everyone feel right at home from the moment you entered in.  I can still see her walking across the kitchen floor to greet us in her festive sweater & earrings when we arrived for Christmas dinner.  She was generous to a fault & a very kind hearted soul.  She hosted a surprise 40th birthday party for me & also a fabulous pool party for my daughter, Daria, & the rest of my family when she returned from Japan for a visit (of course the theme was Japanese with no small detail left unattended).  I have so many fond memories of my mother-in-law & Bill over the last 32 years, all of which I will cherish & hold dear to my heart.  They were a great team & both exceptional humans.  She left us on Bill's birthday & I think that may have been her will.  "Get's it out, Lor!"  I will miss you & your feistiness & will always remember with love the time we spent together.  ❤

Lorraine was an excellent hostess who always loved welcoming visitors. Our pup Stella always tagged along too. Stella loved visiting. Gram was always ready with a handful of treats. Stella never left her side.

Forgot to mention that Mom's Favorite pastime,   apart from pulling weeds and growing tomato plants, 😁was going to the Cambridge for lunch and, as she put it, "Gamble our Inheritance" .The Provincial Gov't .has now lost a significant source of revenue .
