WILLIAM ALLEN BURTON

January 28, 1928 – January 3, 2022

With heavy hearts, we announce that Bill passed away on January 3rd in Winnipeg at the age of 93 years.

He is predeceased by his first wife Hilda (Uhrich). Leaves to mourn their children Karen Line (Murray), David Burton (Michele Quaglia) and Linda Menne (Rob); grandchildren Curtis Line (Crystal), Heather (Walmar), Kyle Menne (Amy Schmidt), Nicole Zarazun (Dane), Allysha Pondy (Dan), Marin Burton (Chris Rochon), William Reid Lingen Burton and Kira Burton (Quinn Wichers); great grandchildren Josh and Connor, Dylan Line, Olive Menne, Laura Zarazun, Emma Pondy and Anthony Rochon. He is also mourned by his half-sister Irene Fornarola and her family in Rochester, New York and his cousin Fran Haslett of Victoria, British Columbia. Bill also leaves to mourn his wife of 40 years, Lorraine, her children Grant (Sharon Franco), Lendre (King) and Jay (Nicole) and her grand children Dustin (Amy) and Alexia.

Bill was born in Chicago in 1928 to Gladys Evelyn Shepherd and Robert William Lingen Burton. After his mother’s death in 1934, Bill was adopted by his aunt Dorothy Cronk (Kenneth) and moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. As a teenager Bill spent his spare time pursuing his hobby of building and flying model airplanes. During WWII, Bill enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and received his pilot license, but the war ended before he was deployed. After the war Bill worked for Drewry’s Brewery Limited in Saskatoon which became Carling/O’Keefe. In 1952 he married Hilda Irene Uhrich and in 1954 Carling/O’Keefe sent Bill, Hilda, and Karen to New York City, where Bill went to school to become a Brew Master. After brewery school, Bill became the Assistant Brew Master at the Carling/O’Keefe plant on Redwood Avenue in Winnipeg. He held this position until the late 70’s when he became the Head Brew Master and later held the position of Head Brew Master and Assistant Plant Manager until his retirement in 1989 when Carling/O’Keefe merged with Molson.

As a young couple in Winnipeg, Bill and Hilda were avid outdoors people and spent most of their summers camping and fishing, especially at Otter Falls and West Hawk Lake. In 1969, Bill and Hilda bought a cottage at Rush Bay in The Lake of Woods where some of the family still cottage to this day.

After the passing of Hilda in 1977, Bill met Lorraine and they were married in 1981. They purchased their home in Fort Garry where the backyard pool became a focal point for many summer parties including elaborate themed Canada Day events. Both Bill and Lorraine enjoyed the antics of their backyard birds for whom Bill diligently cleared a winter path so that he could give them their daily feeding.

Bill was an active member of the Master Brewery’s Association of America. He is predeceased by many Association friends, including Bill Hansen and Jerry Oliver.

In Accordance with Bill’s wishes, cremation/burial has taken place and no formal service will be held.

Our sincere condolences to Lorraine, the Burton and Rodgers families. I first met Bill through the business relationship between Dominion Malting and Carlings. I spent three weeks at Carlings to learn about the brewing process. My teachers were Bill and Al Saltonoski. Bill was very knowledgeable about the brewing process and very helpful to me. He was a very likeable and accepting person. Over the years we became friends.  I was part of the first Tuesday group at Carlings and now the Cambridge. I was always happy to visit with him when he was able to come. He will be missed.      Rest In Peace, dear friend, Bob and Muriel Kenyon

Bill, was a treasure!  He was a consummate gentleman & host at every dinner & pool party.  You would often find him at Lorraine's side in the kitchen helping out in any way he was able...& he always made the best coffee after our family dinners.  He was Lorraine's assistant in their annual tradition of  Christmas baking each Holiday Season.  They were truly a team in so many ways.  He was an unassuming, kindly, intelligent man with whom I shared some great conversations over the more than 30 years I had the pleasure of knowing him.  Bill was a special human who touched my life & left his imprint on my heart.  I will miss him very much.  A huge void has been left with his passing.  May you now be at peace, sweet man.  You have earned your rest.     Sharon Franco (daughter-in-law)

Dear Lorraine and the Burton / Rodgers Families Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss of Bill. Reminiscing about all of the fun memories and wonderful times I was lucky enough to be part of with Bill at the Master Brewers Association Events and of course, the First Tuesday Business Meetings. I owe Bill a debt of gratitude as he introduced a young, fresh faced lab analyst into the World of Brewing.   Bill shared with me his extended knowledge in the art of taste testing beer and was instrumental in furthering my career. Bill was a true gentleman with unparalleled integrity.  He was a remarkable talent, as a Brewmaster, Plant Manager and mentor and he will be sorely missed. In honour of Bill's Memory, I will be writing a personalized Sharpie note of farewell on a bottle (or two) of Black Label to apply the taste test lessons Bill taught me so eagerly. Next time we meet, Bill will be pouring free pitchers of ice cold draught beer while polishing his copper kettle and golden halo. Salty, Bash, Gordy, Dewar, Jerry, Gerry, Bill H, Smitty and Dave Birse will all be there at Bill's Happy Hour Lounge where everyday is Tuesday and the fun starts at Beer:30. With warm thoughts and care Kerry Scarsbrook

Always enjoyed sharing beers and stories with Bill on the deck at the lake,by the pool,or with friends at the Camby on 'First Tuesday" We had our final beers together on Christmas Day .He was always kind and respectful towards our family. He was  a second father to me.,but also one of my best friends .During his recent hospitalization ,he was more concerned about my Mom than he was about himself . So typical . ❤Definitely one of the "Good-uns". I will miss him terribly. Stepson Grant (Jock) Rodgers.
