RONALD JAMES BUTTERFIELD

June 7, 1944 - August 20, 2021

After a loving virtual visit with his dear friend Spenser Chen in Taiwan, Ron died peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on August 20, 2021.

Ron was born in Neepawa, MB. to parents Jean and Jim Butterfield. He was raised in McCreary, Mb. where his early musical training began, fostered especially by his mother. Ron described himself as having had a very “creative childhood”.

Ron attended United College (now University of Winnipeg) as an Arts Theolog from 1962 to 1966. He was student minister at Red Lake United Church, Ontario, in 1965. After deciding on Education rather than Theology as his chosen path, Ron began a long and distinguished career as a Music and Creative Performing Arts teacher. He also completed a degree in English at the University  of Toronto.

Many United Churches benefited from Ron’s special musical talents including Grey Street (Winnipeg), Red Lake (Ontario), Rideau Park (Ottawa), Westridge (Winnipeg) and St. Stephen’s Broadway (Winnipeg).

Ron’s working life took him to many places. In Red Lake, Ontario, Ron founded and directed a Music Arts Festival which later developed into a Performing Arts Music Theatre program in the area. In Ottawa Ron taught an English program for gifted students seeking entrance into competitive Universities. Notably, while working for the River East School Division, Winnipeg, Ron created a multi-media performing arts group of 150, Grades 1-9, students he called “Kids on Stage”. These talented kids performed at the Centennial Concert Hall and Pantages Theatre until 1980. Ward Keith, likely speaks for many of these “kids” when he recently expressed to Ron, “You made a big impact on my life for which I will always be grateful”.

While teaching on a 3-year Government of Canada contract in the Bahamas, Ron took a troupe of 80 Elementary and 20 High School students and a 22 piece band of local Bahamian musicians to Ottawa where they put on a “full show” in several location including the Parliament Building. The students were partly funded by Harry Belafonte, especially a new pair of shoes for every child for their exciting adventure.

In the 1990’s Ron moved to Calgary where he developed many friendships and was loved by many, particularly his neighbours in Edgemont. During this time Ron funded the “networks” social club. He brought so many people together in a way no-one else could. Ron had an eye for talent and he knew everyone had something to contribute. With members of the club, he created a “trade show” out of virtually nothing but the finished product looked like an elaborate Broadway musical production.

Ron’s contribution to Education eventually took him to the far East. Spenser says Ron moved to Taiwan in 2002 to teach English and that is where they first met. In 2003 Ron moved to China to teach at Clifford Estates. He then decided to start his own business as an International University Adviser, helping students find appropriate post-secondary placements in Universities around the world. Many of these grateful students have kept in touch with Ron.

Ron loved Asian culture and fully embraced life in China and Taiwan. He had a huge network of people he called friends, from University scholars to taxi drivers and everyone in-between. He loved them all, no matter their social status - and they loved him. Ron loved the fast-paced, high-energy life of Asia and he took to it naturally.

In 2014 Ron moved back to Taiwan. Spenser bought an apartment. They lived together in Taiwan for about 3 years, having a wonderful time together.

In 2017 Ron became unwell and returned to Winnipeg where he was diagnosed as having stage 4 prostate cancer. This began a challenging time for Ron. Many caring friends, old and new, stepped in to help, as they were able. Thanks are due to Cancer Care and their amazing doctors, social workers and staff who helped Ron on his way. Special thanks go to Riverview Health Centre whose remarkable team made such a difference in his last days.

Ron was loved by many - especially his partner Spenser whose constant loving support gave such comfort to Ron. His dear friend Mike Cush in Calgary also meant the world to Ron. His friend Ginette said; “You are and always have been an inspiration to me.” She summed him up with these words: “courage, wisdom, strength, compassion, pure spirit, visionary”.

Ron’s wish was for his ashes to be taken to Dogtooth Lake, Ontario, a place of many joyful memories.

Spenser and other close friends wish to thank all those who have so eloquently expressed their appreciation for the life of Ronald Butterfield.

Due to covid restrictions and growing health concerns a few close friends will gather for a private celebration of life at a later date.

And now we say to Ron, in keeping with his faith:

The grace of Christ attend you,

The love of God surround you,

The Holy Spirit keep you.  Amen.

Nassau Bahamas around 1981 - 1982 Mr Ron Butterfield directed a number of shows such as Pinocchio at the Dundas and the Wizard of oz at St Mary's hall and many christmas shows free of charge for the tourist and locals in the down town area aswell. During this time private and government schools worked together some performing in choirs and others selected as part of the kids on stage to dance, sing and act while dressed in various customes. That was the first time Bahamian kids showed how talented they were if given an opportunity. He may have paved the way for all the current youth bands choirs and dance clubs in the Bahamian schools today which also evolve into our world famous national youth choir. Thank you to the music teacher from Canada who played a  crucial part in the development of that first generation of kids after Independence!👍

Wow, what a great lost, Mr . Butterfield, an awesome music teacher that made an impact in alot of kids lives. Especially mines. I too was fortunate to be member of his choir at E.P Roberts Primary in the Bahamas and was also a membet of the Kids on Stage wizard of arts production as a Munchkin, yes my good friend Ricardo Marshall made a comment he was the Mayor of the munchkins. Now at age 50, I have so much great memories of oir 2 weeks trip to canada, from toronto, to ottowa and wenipeg, we were in grade 5 and this was my first time ever travelling outside off the bahamas. Another great memory was when I got smacked in the back of my head during our live christmas production because.i was not paying attention and talking. You woñl truly be missed sir GLENROY SMITH AKA MCKENZIE EP ROBERTS 84

Mr. Butterfield was my Elementary School music teacher in the Bahamas. He brought life to the students and excitment to the school. He always inspired us kids; he unlocked many of our hidden talents. Many  experienced a piece of childhood "magic & fantasy" thru his productions. A True Legend that will forever be remembered by 'kids' in the Bahamas. Much Luv & Blessings Shavonne McBride

I crossed paths with Ron Butterfield in 2020, and although our time together was brief, the impact he left on me was profound. In the few visits we shared, I came to know him as a person of kindness and generosity. He assumed the role of a mentor in my life, offering invaluable career advice and imparting wisdom that has guided me in broadening my experiences.

I was so glad to have been able to reconnect with Ron this summer after more than 40 years since our time together through Kids on Stage. It was a reconnection purely by chance, and it was only then that I learned of Ron’s illness; but we were able to have many telephone and in-person visits. I heard so many wonderful stories of Ron’s travels and experiences as we reminisced about the Kids on Stage days so long ago. I was also fortunate enough to spend time with Ron on the day before his passing at Riverview.  Ron was deeply committed to his craft and made a positive impact on the lives of the thousands of people he connected with over his life, and through his world travels. I count myself as one of the many people who Ron inspired and encouraged as a kid so very long ago.   Thank you Ron for our great conversations over the last few weeks. Rest In Peace now knowing the difference you have made and the lives you have touched.

Ron & I met in Calgary in 2000 where we founded Networks Calgary Association together. We only ran the social club for 1 1/2 years before he left for China & I continued in his absence. We kept in touch over the years through telephone calls & emails.  It was always a pleasure to catch up with all his adventures. I was excited that he returned to The Peg but also sad because of the health concerns. I wonder if he ever finished that book he was in the process of writing. See you in the next life Ronnie......

We came to know Ron.at the time of the formation of Kids On Stage Parents Support Group..  Both our children, Deanna and Scott, were members of the group. When Ron returned from Asia he contacted us, and we kept in touch until his death. Our family will always remember his many gifts!   The Barbour Family

I first met Ron at Broadway Disciples United Church in Winnipeg . After Sunday service, we always talk about the Arts and Culture. He was very approachable and fun to talk to. He was a consistent supporter of all the cultural and musical shows that I organized . He will be the first one to buy tickets without hesitation . I appreciate his generosity and genuine friendship. You will be sorely missed my dear friend, Ron

Remember Ron fondly as a classmate in McCreary over 60 years ago. Our school had a piano in the hallway. Ron would play and a bunch of us would dance. I recall his playing “Flight of the Bumblebee”.  Interesting to read his life’s journey. Norma (Reinson) Bryer.

My heart is broken.  Such a wonderful man and a great friend to my parents over the years. (Paul and Mary Okanski).  I have such good memories of Ron. As a student minister he spent a number of evenings at our house, taking the time to teach me how to tell time and play the piano, a love I passed on to my own children. I always enjoyed reading Ron's emails to my mom and I know she so enjoyed long conversations with him.  Oh my the Festival of the Arts here in Red Lake, how I hated performing on stage.  My last time and guess who was my adjudicator, Ron, however I did get 1st class honours on my music exam after his kinds words. Such a love of music he inspired to so many people.  He will be missed.

I am very sorry to hear of Ron's passing! He was extremely talented and such a dedicated teacher of students. He had huge demands which resulted in some pretty amazing productions! My 3 children were involved in several of them. Kids on Stage will always be memorable in our lives! Ron has obviously left his mark all over the world! May he now rest in peace and let his spirit live on, bringing joy and happiness in our memories of Ron❤

Ron, I hope you're no longer in pain and you're at peace now.  I wished I had had the chance to say final goodbyes but it just wasn't meant to be.  I had hoped you would have texted me when I asked if it was okay to visit you in the hospital but not sure what had happened.  Your cell phone died? You weren't able to text?  I probably never know now.   Ron and I had known each other for well over 35 years.  We met through a course he taught out of his home when he lived in Winnipeg and stayed in contact all the years while he was away in Asia.  When Ron left for Asia, many of his friends were not computer literate nor had email addresses at the time which would have made it easier to keep in touch.  Ron would write me about life in Taiwan and Guanzho, China regularly.  While he was principal of the school in Guanzho, he messaged me after the 2004 tsunami to let me know he lost 5 teachers who had gone to Thailand and they had perished during the incident. When Ron returned to Winnipeg after his diagnosis of prostate cancer in China, we kept in even more regular contact.  He invited me to his first apartment facing the Legislative Building and we had tea and dainties in his plastic lawn furniture sitting in his living room.  We had an incredible chat for many hours when he said once again "I wonder how to contact my friends.  It's been a while year back to Winnipeg and I still haven't been able to contact them.  They must have switched from land lines to cell phones which is why I can't seem to reach them".  He had mentioned this to me a few times in the year he was back and I finally asked "Which friends are you trying to find?"  He rattled off 4 names and I had to say "Sorry, Ron, they have all passed away while you were in Asia".  (That was really hard to do).   He was quiet for a while and then said "Well, I guess I'm going to just have to make new ones!".   That was the best answer ever!!!   Your wisdom has always been an inspiration to me and I will miss that.  Until we meet again...   Attached is a photo Ron sent of himself before he went into the hospital.
