Paul Bycko
June 3, 1959 - January 21, 2020
Paul John Bycko, 60, beloved son, brother and uncle returned to his heavenly father on January 21, 2020. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him through his lengthy illness and ultimately gave him peace. Those who knew Paul, even a little, lost a shining light in their lives.

Left to mourn his passing and honour his legacy of kindness and generosity are his sister Rose (Jeffrey) Rozmus; nephew Luke Holt of Regina; niece Jeanine (Kyle) Courteau; great-nieces Amanda Holt (Adam); Aubrey, McKenna, and Racquel Courteau; great-nephew Lukas of Regina; great-great nephews Mason McKee and Kayden Fernandez and great-great niece Luna McKee. Paul was predeceased by his parents, John and Nina Bycko; uncle and aunt Michael and Maria Boychuk; and sister Irene Holt.

Paul was born on June 3rd, 1959 but that wasn’t his only birthday. During his early childhood, the family didn’t know the exact day of his birthday, so for the longest time they celebrated it on the 4th of June. He enjoyed his childhood playing with all his friends on the center boulevard on Burrows Avenue in the North End of Winnipeg. The summers would be spent playing marbles, hippy tippy, riding his bicycle and exploring St John's Park and the banks of the Red River where he would build many elaborate forts. On weekends there would be excursions to Assiniboine Park, Lockport, Winnipeg Beach and Matlock.

He later developed an interest in science, especially in space and electronics. He had his walls plastered with pictures of NASA and the lunar landing, rockets, and other galactic phenomena. Hence, as an adult he collected all the Star Wars DVDs anxiously awaiting new releases. In his youth, he quite enjoyed receiving his monthly mailed science experiments which contained a lot of electronics. He would spend hours on the weekend working on the experiments. it was no surprise that years later Paul would graduate from Red River College with an Electronics Degree and become a Quality Control Manager at Unisys and purchase the very first issue of the Apple computer.

Paul really loved the martial arts. Bruce Lee, Jacky Chan and Jet Li were his heroes. He trained formally in his youth at Tiger Claw Junj Fu. He used to take the plastic stars off Five Star Whisky bottles and use them as throwing stars. He later purchased a pair of tin snips, and with scrap aluminum that his father brought home, he started making his own throwing stars. But these were not his only heroes, Rocky was right up there with them.

Paul loved all things corvette, finally purchasing his dream car later in life. Unfortunately, thereafter, his health began to fail, and he was unable to enjoy it, nor fulfill his dream to visit Disney Land. Rather than watching TV, Paul really enjoyed listening to the radio. He would spend long hours into the night searching for old radio shows like Jack Benny and Superman. Paul had an in depth knowledge of politics and current events and would spend hours debating them with his nephew Luke and sister Rose. But his true passion was his faith, the foundation of which was set in his youth while attending church services at Living Word Temple in the North End. In later years he would faithfully listen to sermons on the radio, read his bible, one chapter a day, and preach to anyone who would listen. Throughout his life Paul was extremely generous, always donating to various charities and ministries. Even in the toughest of times, Paul always managed to support God’s work.

Paul was extremely devoted to his family. He dedicated his life to caring for both his ailing father and mother, granting them their wish to die at home. This was a difficult time for Paul with little time to spare but he still managed to find the time to visit his aunt two to three times a week in the nursing home until the time of her demise. He was a great man, generous and kind, with strong conviction. He was a man of God.
