John Byers

JOHN BYERS
August 29, 1953 - September 6, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of John at age 72.
John was one of five siblings born in Selkirk. He is predeceased by his sister, Barb Rex (Dick); and his sister-in-law Cathy Byers.
He was the middle child and will be missed by his siblings: brother Doug of Calgary, brother Tim (Petra), and Don (Donna).
He is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter Sheri Borgfjord; son-in-law, Mark; their children, Laila, Trevor, and Jayson Borgfjord; and his daughter, Sabrina Melanson.
Most of his working life was spent in healthcare. He was very much respected for the kind, caring and gentle way. He looked after people throughout his whole life.
He was a member of West Kildonan Legion and a frequent visitor of the Selkirk Legion.
John was always active and enjoyed all sports. He like to golf and also curled for 10 years out of West Kildonan and curling club. He loved going for a drive in the country, especially on river road and spending time out at the family cabin in Lac du Bonnet.
John was a kind, considerate, private man. At his request, there will be no formal service and in accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place.
His life will be celebrated privately by his immediate family at a later date.
The family appreciates the love and support extended at this difficult time and wish to thank all of the staff at Concordia Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit for of their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to an animal shelter of your choice.
Thank you for your love and kindness as we adjust to life without him.
Love you more
Bye now

My cousin Johnny was the most heartfelt man. He was solid and kind and gentle. We didn't get to spend a lot of time together in our grown up years but we connected through Barb and he made sure I got to go to dim sum which was a favourite place of Mary's and his. You couldn't be around him without feeler calmer and smile more. That twinkle of humour and kindness to others was delightful. Mary, you and John were the most wonderful couple together and you could tell he loved you beyond words. I will miss his soul on this earth. Sending peace and hugs to Mary and the famiies who love him. 🥰

Call it a "guy" thing. Call it intuition (mine never lets me down when it comes to people.) But the first time that I was introduced to Jonny, I looked him in the eye and felt his handshake. Good enough for me. Every time after that, he just reaffirmed what I already knew. A stand up guy that loved life, would give you the shirt off of his back, would listen with genuine interest and needed very few words to reciprocate concerns. Love and respect Jonny. I'm proud to call you family.

Jonny, you are missed already! Thanks for always sharing the laughter filled moments we sh every time we got together. We both loved sports but not necessarily the same teams. Didn't matter though because of a mutual respect and some good natured kidding. We also shared a great appreciation for Mother Nature and loved the serenity of the great outdoors. Our visits we always too short and the time in between too long. Thanks for sharing such a special life with my sister. She will be loved by family forever. Good bye our special friend 💙

Hearing of John's passing broke my heart 💔 He was one of the sweetest & funniest people I've had the pleasure of knowing. I have fond memories of watching him curl in the big Manitoba curling tournament in 2007 and drinking beer with him and his teammates after...I will cherish our chats about football and music and crazy stories about working in healthcare...him teasing family members over accidentally getting in cars with strangers & other silly antics over backyard or basement beers... One time I was in town unannounced and he told me he felt bad that he was busy and felt he hadn't spent enough time with me and promised to make it up as soon as possible. And of course the way he loved my aunty with his whole heart was enough to make me love him too. I will miss him a lot 💙

I worked with John for many years at LutherHome. They just don't make them like that anymore. He had a way with the residents and was a pleasure to be around. A friendly smile , met with an everyday good mornin'... Those who knew him respected him immensely. I'm truley saddened by the news of his passing. Heartfelt Condolences to Mary, Sheri, Sabrina and family ♥️ Rest Peacefully John

I had the priv of knowing John Professionally through Luther Home and personally With Golf and fishing trips. John was THE BEST Health care worker I ever met. His caring and compassion was top notch and he could work with the toughest clients and make it look easy. I enjoyed our weekends at end of year when he would join my father and I at the lake to break down for the fall. We used it as a fishing getaway and John was always so was grateful to get out the "The Big shitty"
