JOHN BYMAN
January 14, 1926 - May 1, 2025
We announce that John passed away on May 1, 2025 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 99 years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Mary; children: Maureen (Curtis), Roxanne, and Sherry (Brent); grandchildren: Jaime (Jamie), Rachel (Matthew), Jason, and Sean; great grandchildren: Carlee (Sab), Lucas (Kat Bird), Jessie, Danny, Amelia, Oliver and John; great great grandhild Sage; brother Roy (Mary); extended family and friends. John is predeceased by 11 siblings; and grandson Justin.
John was born January 14, 1926 to Lars and Brita Byman on the family farm near Menisino, Manitoba. He grew up during the Great Depression era, with 12 siblings. John became an avid hunter and fisherman, a passion that continued throughout his long life. He shot a deer on the run when he was 89 years old, and his last deer at the age of 94.
John started training for deployment with the Canadian Military at the age of 17 years, and in January the month of his 18th birthday he was shipped out, to fight in WW2. He served with the Canadian Provost Corps, Canada’s branch of the Military Police. John was on active duty when the Aldershot Riot broke out in Hampshire, England, July 4-5, 1945. MP’s tried to forcibly quell the Canadian troops who were anxious to be repatriated after the war.
When John returned home to Canada, he farmed in Menisino. He married Mary (Horvath) on April 2, 1960, and they moved to Winnipeg, MB. John worked as a backhoe operator for Clay Simpkins, eventually buying his own machine and becoming a private contractor.
Eventually purchasing a property in St. Andrews, MB. There they made their home for 30 years, there they raised their three daughters, Maureen, Roxanne, and Sherry.
John and Mary retired and moved back home to Menisino, enjoying country life and community events, especially curling. They lived independently until October 2022 when they moved to live with their daughter Roxanne in Charleswood in Winnipeg.
John was always a good neighbour and friend to many, always ready with a helping hand. He was an outdoorsman, a sportsman, and a good provider. John and Mary enjoyed 65 years together. He instilled in his daughters his work ethic, his humour, and his strength. He will be greatly missed.
Rest in peace, Dad.
A service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at Piney Community Centre, 5017 MB-89 in Piney, MB. Burial to follow the service at Menisino Cemetery, 201 Rd. Menisino, MB.

My memories of Uncle Johnney are vast and varied but perhaps what stands out most is his fun loving nature. Always ready with a joke or a prank bringing laughter and surprise. His love and faithfulness to Aunty Mary over 65 years of marriage is an example to us all. We will miss you Uncle Johnney!
