JOSEPHINE CARLIN

February 10, 1934 – December 19, 2023

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Josephine on December 19, 2023, at the age of 89.

Josephine was predeceased by her loving husband Dino.  She will be deeply missed by her children Daniela (Jeff), Olivia (Troy), Linda (Rod) and Dino; grandchildren Hilary (Cory), Emily, Audrey, Emma, Jared, Jacob and Natalie; and her great-grandson Anders.

Josephine was born in the town of Villarosa in the province of Enna, Sicily (Italy) on February 10, 1934. When she was 22, she travelled alone by boat to Canada and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia December 18, 1956. She then took a train and travelled to Winnipeg, Manitoba to join her family.  We will always remember her stories of the long train ride and seeing snow for the first time in Canada.  Josephine later met Dino while taking an English class and they were married June 24, 1961.

Spending time with family was everything to Josephine. She would always be cooking a fantastic meal and encouraging everyone to mangia (eat).  All who ate her lasagna will never forget how incredible it tasted.

You taught us so many things but most importantly you taught us how to love. You were so loving, caring and so very proud of us all. There was always a sparkle in your eyes when you saw your grandchildren and your great-grandson, the joy you felt was undeniable.  You and dad did so much for us.  You gave us everything that you did not have when growing up and we could never thank you enough.  You have given each of us a little piece of your compassion, your strength and made us all what we are today.

You were so strong and you fought so hard – you can rest now and be with dad. You will never be forgotten and you will always hold a special place in our hearts.

The family would like to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa for their care and support during her final months.  A private family service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making contributions in Josephine’s memory to a charity of choice.

Zia Josa will be missed but not forgotten.  The Fia families have the fondest memories of growing up with the Carlin family.  Some of our best memories were made at the cottages at Grand Beach.  It was a gathering place where sister Rosa and Josa loved to cook and spend time with the families. As kids we loved Christmas where we would spend a few days enjoying the company of our cousins.  Auntie Josa and uncle Dino were great hosts and we will always cherish the great memories that were made. May you rest in peace Zia Josa. Condolences to our cousins Daniela, Olivia, Linda and Dino and your families. Love Paul, Christine, Alessio and Amare

My brother Paul and I will always have such fond memories of our Zia Josa. Our mom Rosa and Zia Josa were so close and no matter what they always thought about their children in such a selfless manner. We will always love Zia Josa, Uncle Dino and Rosa for that selflessness. We will remember Zia Josa for those family get togethers where she would cook up a storm and by far made the best lasagna on the face of the planet. Zia Josa taught my cousins Daniela, Olivia, Linda and Dino great character but also taught them those great recipes and desserts like cheesecake and chocolate chip cookies that I will never forget. My aunt and I would always have great conversations and we both agreed that in Canada everyone lives to work but in Italy people live for their families and to enjoy great meals together. Zia Josa and the entire Carlin family would often bring together all our families including cousins, aunts and uncles at Christmas, Easter or at the cottage. As children, my brother and I don't recall being more excited with anticipation for those wonderful family get togethers. Zia Josa was a great wife to Uncle Dino and a fantastic Mom to our cousins Daniela, Olivia, Linda and Dino and an amazing Grandmother to her grandchildren. God Bless her and may she rest in peace. We wish our cousins Daniela, Oliva, Linda, Dino and their spouses, children and grandchildren our sincere condolences. Love from the Fia Family: Roberto, Nicole, Mateo and Eston.❤

Sending all of you love.❤ Zia was my greatest role model when it came to demonstrating love to her husband, children and all of the rest of the family.  She exuded love.  I always felt the love she spread with incredible ease. She always had a soft voice and a gentle way of making me feel good about myself. I cherish the memories of her organizing beautiful times to be held at the beach.  Your mom and dad, (grandmother and grandfather,) were so thoughtful to pick me up so that I could have a good time playing and swimming with my cousins as well as eating with my cousins, aunties and uncles at the different beaches that we went to.  The charcoal flavoured burgers and chicken were especially delicious as were the cheesecake and brownies that are my two favourite desserts, to this day.  I had the pleasure of eating her lasagna at the house parties with family and family friends.  I thank Zia for all of the warm memories she leaves me with.❤ Love, Mary
