ROBERT CARRIERE
July 6,1933 - August 21,2020
With heavy hearts, we announce that Robert Carriere passed away on August 21,2020 at Deer Lodge Center at the age of 87 years.

Dad was born in St. Boniface on July 6,1933. He was the youngest son of Emil and Gertrude Carriere. He spoke often of his early life on John Bruce Road in what is now St. Vital. As a young man he joined the military to be in the Korean War. He was very proud of being part of the Princess Patricia Light Infantry. While in Korea he was introduced to Judo eventually getting his black belt. He taught at a few Y.M.C.A.s in Manitoba. He volunteered at the 1967 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg.
After the military Dad married, first to Margaret Giesbrecht and had five children, Grant, Emile, Ellery, Margaret and Guy. Sadly she passed away in 1961.
He met Margaret Fair and they had six children Lenore, Aaron, Brett, Robert Jr., Nadine and Gwen. Margaret passed away in 1984.
Dad then met Mary Margaret Bracelin and they enjoyed 18yrs together before Mary passed away in 2013.
Dad had many different types of jobs in his lifetime. He worked in the mines in Manitoba and Ontario, sewer and water in Winnipeg, hotel management which took him to many towns around Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario. Later in life dad worked as a Commisionaire before retiring to a house in Rathwell, Manitoba.
He enjoyed planting a garden and growing his own fruit trees and vegetables. Dad enjoyed driving to different parts of the country and the States to visit family or to see what was there. Dad talked about turning off main roads to see what was down, the less traveled gravel roads.
Dad was also very proud of his Metis heritage. He was a colour carrier at pow wows, Remembrance ceremonies and other aboriginal gatherings. He spoke at schools representing Aboriginal Veterans at Remembrance Day assemblies. He also was a member of the Hartford and #43 Legions.
In Dads final years he struggled with Dementia and eventually moved to Deer Lodge Centre where he enjoyed participating in all activities and talking with people. He really enjoyed playing cribbage with staff and doing puzzles Dad never lost his sense of humour. When staff would ask him where he was going when leaving on an outing his reply would be “Going to rob banks. Wanna come?”
On his last day it was a good day. He was outside on the grounds which he loved. While out in the morning an eagle flew over. We now know it was calling him home.
He was predeceased by his parents, Emile and Gertrude; sisters, Delores and Norma; and sons, Grant and Emile.
He will be greatly missed by his children, Ellery(Deb), Marg(Kirk), Guy, Lenore, Aaron(Hua Jiang), Brett, Rob, Nadine and Gwen; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brother in law, Gordon Giesbrecht( Effie); sister in laws, Rossela Baerg and Kathleen Kisko (Stan).
