HOPE CARROLL

August 3, 1927 – January 16, 2020

Hope Carroll died peacefully, while surrounded by her family, in the early hours of Thursday, January 16, 2020 in the Grace General Hospital, at the age of 92 years.

Hope was born to Ingibjorg Eyvindson and Bjorn (Gestsson) Christianson in Langruth, Manitoba on August 3, 1927. She graduated with a Home Economics degree from the University of Manitoba and organized her class reunion every year for decades. Hope was an active member of the University Women’s Club and an avid bridge player, world traveller and Scrabble mastermind. Along with her husband, she was deeply engaged in politics. Hope was known for her generous hospitality, regularly entertaining friends and family. What her family will miss most is the time spent every summer at Clearwater Lake to celebrate the great matriarch’s birthday. Her children and grandchildren regularly travelled from around the world to be together and share stories, heated political debates, and raucous laughter over cocktails every afternoon at 5 o’clock sharp.

Hope was predeceased by her husband Jack Carroll; son John Carroll; and brothers Conrad, Arden, and John Christianson. Hope is survived by her children Sally (Bob), Peter (Carolyn), and Catherine; grandchildren Joe, Julie, Jane (Jon), Crystal (Pablo), Maegan, Alexander, Gillian (Bethany), Louise (Shane), Mark (Kristie), Austin (Jessica), and John; and great-grandchildren Aila, Shaenen, Kiviuk, Connor, Sura, Harrison, Jack, Riley, Elizabeth, Toben, Katherine, Margo, Simone, Ezekiel, Esbin, and Frankie Hope. Hope’s memory will be forever treasured by her family and countless friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:30 pm Monday, January 20, 2019 in the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road.

To Catherine and family-It's been many years but I want you to know you are in my thoughts. I always remember your home as a gathering place for all of your friends. In hindsight I now realize how much of that welcoming atmosphere was created by your mother. The photo tribute is absolutely beautiful and shows her remarkable legacy. Hope was obviously a woman who cherished her family and friends, and was cherished equally in return. A woman, well-named, and a life well lived! Cherish her memory.

I was appointed to the Manitoba Film Classification Board under Howard Pawley and your mom was our chair person. A very special lady with very strong beliefs. I learnt so much from her and I am so sorry.
