JAIMZ CASH

(DONALD JAMES HORNSBY)

May 26, 1946 - August 15, 2021

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jaimz, aged 75, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Jaimz leaves to mourn his life partner Maria, daughters Kim and Nancy (Troy), step-son Andrew (Chelsea), grandchildren Brenden, Dayven, Emmy, Aylee, Raydin and Kiera, sister Leslie (Michael), numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

He was predeceased by his mother Barbara (1970), sister Lorraine (1985), sister Lois (1991) and his father Fred (1998).

Jaimz was born in Winnipeg on May 26, 1946, to Barbara (Campbell) and Fred Hornsby.  He spent the majority of his childhood in the Brooklyn neighbourhood, then moving to St. Vital in his youth.  He also lived in Southdale, Elmwood, Osborne Village, St. Norbert, East Elmwood and East Kildonan.

Jaimz worked at many different jobs but some of the most notable to him were the Department of National Revenue (1966-68), Northern Electric (1968-70), Canadian Electronics (1970-72), Manitoba Youth Centre (1972-74) and Winnipeg Transit (1974-2008).  He spoke fondly of working at the Youth Centre and Transit, mainly for all the people he met and spoke with while working there.  He really enjoyed his last three years at Winnipeg Transit since he was assigned to work in the Treasury department while a leg injury was healing.

In retirement he became a voracious reader spending several hours each day reading world news, Facebook and well over one thousand books on his e-reader.  He read so many books that he was currently on his third e-reader, having burned out the previous two.

He truly enjoyed our Winnipeg summer weather, being able to sit outside and read or do a little gardening and the annual trip up to Gimli to enjoy the beach and town.  He hated the winters here and dreaded the shorter days and cold, dark nights.

We would like to thank CancerCare Manitoba, Palliative Care and Riverview Health Centre 3E for their help in caring for Jaimz during this difficult time.

Jaimz always tried to help disadvantaged kids in any way he could so he had requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Winnipeg Free Press Sunshine Fund.

A short photo-biography set to one of Jaimz's favourite songs is available above. The family encourages the sharing of stories, memories and condolences by using the comment section on this tribute page.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.

We love you Jaimz.  You’ll always be in our hearts.

I was 6 the first time I met Jim. That's my earliest memory of him. Barb had passed. This was June of 1970. Rita, Gramma Hornsby and myself were over at the Driftwood apartments on Osbourne offering our support. Or it may have been at my old home on Sadler. No matter, Leslie was there with my Mom. I'll always remember her in distress...I've been there, so I get it and can fully relate. Anyways, Jim came around after some time, and sat down with me. Like my other 'cousins,' he was close to 20 years older than myself. He sat down across from me, pulled out a Chess board, and tried to teach me the game. So, this was probably at the Driftwood. Other family arrived later...trickling in one by one. But I will always remember Jim's kindness...spending some time with a young kid and being truly vulnerable and down to earth about it. The last time I saw Jim was in April of 2009 at Irene Perkins' funeral. Older, wiser...but just as decent and accommodating. That's my lasting and enduring memory of Jim. He was his own man. He had a quiet, nondescript way about him. A humble charisma that was contagious. And I loved the fact that he would look you directly in the eyes when having a conversation with you. He gave respect to earn respect. Stuff like that goes a long ways with me. Good-bye, Jim! Say 'hello' to Mom and Gramma for me.❤

Jaimz was the patriarch in our generation of Campbell's and that holds a special place in our family history. I remember Jaimz when we were all so very young and felt sorry for him that all his cousins in Winnipeg were girls. It took seven years before he got to have a male cousin come into the midst. He was always so kind to us girls and never complained that we were so noisy and probably from time to time up to no good. My conversations with Jaimz over the past three years are a blessing that I will hold onto in the years to come. He was a very kind and caring man to everyone. I will miss him and my sincere condolences go out to his immediate family. Rest in peace my cousin and we will meet again one day when the time is right.

I Did not know Jaimz personally but he was a good friend of my dad Peter Hiebert, and I worked with Maria for a time. Our deepest condolences to the whole family!

I will truly miss you Jaimz. I will miss your phone calls . When  you would call me and I answered you would say big Bro here. I could not have asked for a better brother. You were so understanding and such an inspiration to me. I will miss our cooking recipes and your quarky jokes. You may not be here physically but you’ll always be in my heart and I have so many wonderful memories of you that I  will cherish forever. I will miss you bro. Hugs till we meet again.

I knew Jaimz through my Aunt Merle. He always used to say to me "it's a good thing you're good looking" as he teased me during my teenage years. My fondest memory of Jim was when he drove me right down Wolseley Ave to my front door on his Transit bus. Rest in Peace Jaimz.  ❤

Jim was a very sweet kind soul.  When his cousin Bob needed a kidney he was first to offer his.  When Bob was at Deer Lodge he visited him weekly.  Bob always looked forward to his visits.  Rest in peace.

I began working at Winnipeg Transit in 1988 and met Jaimz shortly thereafter. I always appreciated his easy going, friendly attitude, especially as a newbie. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
