ALEXANDER GERMAN CASTRO

With heavy hearts, we announce that Ali (Alex) passed away on May 4, 2022 at HSC, Winnipeg at the age of 26 years.

Alex will be remembered for his love of soccer and all the experiences and accomplishments the sport brought him. Growing up in a family who lives and breathes soccer, from a young age Alex was a natural. He grew up at the Soccer field watching Mom, Dad, and his older siblings play the sport. Soccer took Alex around the world, and everyone he met will miss him most on the field, where he showed his true self; a respectful, kind, wonderful man.

In doing what he was most passionate about came along many teammates and opponents Alex called friends. Alex was the teammate everyone wanted, not only for his skills with the ball, but for his sportsmanship. He committed himself to coaching FC Northwest as well as CMU and Red River College.

Alex attended Robertson Elementary, Andrew Mynarski Middle School and graduated from Sisler High School and went on to study at Red River College where he received a certificate in Applied Accounting and studied Business at CMU.

Alex’s love for the sport took him to play in many tournaments, Mini World Cup, Ukraine Cup, the Schwan’s USA Cup with Northwest. Also, winning MSA Cup and go on to represent Manitoba at Nationals coming home with the gold medal. Alex never missed an opportunity to attend or participate in a sporting event.

His passion for the sport took him in a different path, refereeing, where he belong to a different group of people (referees) which he had a lot of respect for and created close friendships with, his dedication and commitment to referring  took him around Canada and the World, places like Edmonton, San Diego, Minneapolis, Barcelona, Lisbon and Piteå (Sweden) and Qingdao (China) and each place and country he visited, he created a new family of friends which he kept in contact with on a regular basis and was always excited to see them at the next big tournament.

Alex was very family oriented and was involved in all our lives, from young age he loved to travel never missed family trips, he revisited many places that left him memories when he was younger, some of the places he revisited, Jasper, Banff, Chile and many more.

Alex loved to eat, if there was a BBQ, he was there. Whether at home at teammates and family.

Alex education took him to join the Wawanesa team, Alex worked at Wawanesa Insurance for the past four years where he enjoyed being a part of that team.

Alex was taken from us way too soon he was full of life and love; he will be greatly missed but he will not be forgotten.  We will love him forever and cherish his memories; Alex will never leave us he will continue to be part of our daily lives and forever be in our hearts and thoughts. Alex will guide us in the right path.

You can shed tears that he is gone,

Or you can smile because he lived,

You can close your eyes

and pray that he will come back,

Or you can open your eyes

and see all that he has left,

Your heart can be empty

because you can’t see him,

Or you can be full of love that you shared,

You can turn back on tomorrow and live yesterday,

Or you can be happy for tomorrow

because of yesterday,

You can remember him and only that he is gone,

Or you can cherish his memory and let live on,

You can cry and close your mind,

be empty and turn your back,

Or you can do what he would want :

smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Alex loved wearing team jerseys any opportunity he got he wore one, so whenever you are paying him a visit, we encourage you to wear one it will make his day.

A celebration of his life will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday May 30, 2022, at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Church).

An interment will follow directly after; however, the family request privacy at the burial site, and that only immediate family proceed there. They welcome all to visit Alex at the site at a later time though.

Alex's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

My deepest sympathies to the Castro family. A lovely family. I had the pleasure of teaching and coaching Alex at both Andrew Mynarski and Sisler. He really was dedicated to the sport of soccer and had such a positive attitude. My heart hurts with this loss. I love the photo of him with Meghan wearing their Hawks uniforms - I remember him like that so clearly.

I am so saddened by the passing of  Ali.  My deepest sympathies to the Castro & Olynyk families, and to all of the very close friends he made through his life.  I feel fortunate to have gotten to know him through his involvement in college soccer and futsal.  He set an example for all to live by, was a great player, referee and coach, and loved his family.  I have several very fond memories of him in competition that I will cherish.  Gone too soon.  He will not be forgotten.

I was shocked and very saddened when I learned that Ali had passed away. He was a teammate of mine when we were youth and later on he refereed many of my soccer games. Every time I interacted with him he was friendly and cheerful. He was a great guy whom I will never forget. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

There are no words that can properly convey our sympathies. The world will miss the example of such an extraordinary gentleman from such a loving family. We have fond memories of futsal nationals (despite the results) and Ali was an important part of that - as were his family, the only other to make the trip. May friends and memories help keep you strong. Randy Mooi and Odette Morin (for Adam Mooi)
