MICHAEL DANIEL CATALANO
November 9, 1957 – July 13, 2024
It is with sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Michael Daniel Catalano on July 13, 2024. Michael was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 9, 1957.
Michael leaves behind his father, Vincent Catalano; and was predeceased by his mother, Nadine Catalano (née Howitt). He also leaves behind his former wife, Karen; their three children, Anthony (Yasmeen), Libby (Zach), and James (Lara); his sisters Susanne (Howard) and Michele (Colin); and nieces and nephews, Nicole (Johnny, Jakob, and Emma), David (Keeley and Ezra), Nicholas (Micaela), Andrew, and Emily.
Michael will be remembered for his great sense of humour, his loyalty and dedication to family, and his love of sports, nature, fishing, cooking, music and the arts. He took a keen interest in the younger generation of the family; his children were his pride and joy and he kept in touch with his many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed hearing updates on their lives and their adventures. Michael was looking forward to the upcoming weddings of two of his children.
Michael earned his BComm at the University of Manitoba and went on to become a CPA, working both in industry and public practice over the years. He enjoyed travelling to rural audits or northern fly-in communities and meeting people from all walks of life.
Michael served the community for many years as a coach of multiple youth basketball teams in the WMBA, and also as basketball convenor for Gateway Recreation Centre. He was passionate about the sport and inclusion. In 2009 he was voted Coach of the Year.
Michael’s last few years were challenging as he had many health issues arise but his courage in the face of such adversity and his tenacity in adapting to each new hardship was remarkable. Although we will miss him, there is also relief in knowing that he is no longer suffering.
Thank you to Dr. Peter Bialy and also Eddie and Omar for their care. Special thanks to Karen Catalano, Michael’s former wife, who was an important support to Michael over many years right up until his last days. The family would like to thank the staff at SICU at HSC for their care and compassion in Michael’s last hours.
A private family celebration of life will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada.
Michael’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Mike and I met in grade 10 when his love of basketbal started. We played rugby together and enjoyed many rugby trips. we were the Best Man at each other's weddings and watched our young families gro. Over the years our paths took us in different directions and we did not stay in touch as often. We always thought there would be time to reconnect and catch up. My deepest sympathies to Mike's family, Karen and his children, his siblings and their families and to his father, Vince.

When Michael visited our farm there were conversations about cooking, current affairs, politics, opinion and education. He taught me to roast beef at 270 degrees Fahrenheit to create an ultra tender finished product. Long and slow was the way he believed beef should be roasted. He spoke of his association with BIG BROTHERS. When he noticed that my youngest child was outgrowing his winter coat, Michael asked for, and acquired, the coat. He gave it to a Winnipeg boy. Both Michael and the boy were associated with BIG BROTHERS.
