JOSEPH GLENN STUART CAYER

May 7, 1959 - April 23, 2022

Surrounded by his family, Glenn passed away peacefully on April 23, 2022 at St. Boniface Hospital.

Glenn is survived by his children Lucien (Ronna) and Marielle (Brenin), former wife Nicola Andrews, sisters Sylvia Rumenovich, Rita (Richard) Young, Paulette (Warren) Barber, brothers Ron (Donna) and Larry, and his partner, Donna Lebo.  He was predeceased by his parents George and Josephine and brother Cecil.

Glenn grew up in Brandon and lived in Dauphin, St. Francois Xavier and Winnipeg.   After graduating with a business administration degree from Assiniboine Community College and a commerce degree from the University of Manitoba he began his 35-year career with Manitoba Hydro. Professional highlights included serving on the provincial and national boards of the Business Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) and consulting on energy efficiency programs with Hydro International in Costa Rica. He was a founding partner in Outdoor Box Office (OBO) which led to his working at fairs, festivals and concerts across Canada.

Glenn had passions for sports and travel.  He lived a healthy, active life, and enjoyed hockey, tennis, golf, cycling and skiing.  Glenn was especially passionate about hockey. He grew up a Montreal Canadiens fan, but became a Winnipeg Jets fan and season ticket holder. Glenn coached many seasons of Lucien’s hockey with the St. Eustache Jets and attended all of Lucien and Marielle’s sports activities.  Time with his friends was usually spent on a golf course, tennis court, hockey rink or bike trail.

In 1984, Glenn cycled from Kamloops to Santa Barbara.  This was the first of many long-distance cycling tours in Canada and abroad, including a bike ride from Washington, DC to Florida with Lucien.  Glenn enjoyed travelling and had explored countries with family and friends. A special trip was a tour of Colombia with Marielle. However, he also loved spending time year-round at Clear Lake with his family.

Glenn instilled strong values in his children and they were his priority. He welcomed family and friends to celebrate weddings for Lucien and Marielle last fall.  He left us too soon but lived his life to the fullest.

As Glenn reminded us this year at Marielle’s wedding:

“Never regret a day in your life: good days give happiness, bad days give experience, worst days give lessons, and best days give memories.” ~Unknown

The family wish to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff at CancerCare Manitoba and the Palliative Care Team at St. Boniface Hospital.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral is planned. Donations may be made in his memory to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

Lucien and Marielle, our thoughts are with you and your Mom during this difficult time.  We have such fond memories of your Dad and your family during our time in Elie and for years later.  He had a passion for life and even though he has left us way too early, I am glad you had such wonderful adventures with him.  Sincerely the Forresters

To all who knew and loved Glenn.. Glenn and I go back about 20 years when he worked with Hydro and helped me with green initiatives for an office building I managed. Later we sat on the board of BOMA Manitoba together. Glenn was kind, thoughtful, and had a humorous side that I really appreciated. He was always impeccably dressed no matter if it was in the office, on the golf course or at a Bomex conference. He could sure wear a suit well. My favorite is the way he would smile so widely and nod his head at the same time, accompanied by a twinkle in his eyes.  That is how I will always remember him. Glenn, I hope you are on your bike on an amazing trail.

Sorry to hear of Glenn’s passing at such a young age, Glenn and I met as friends at Kinsmen Club meetings and became business partners starting Outdoor Box Office together. We travelled across the prairies to fairs and festivals thru some tough years and he was always a positive force in our ventures and kept me going when I was ready to give up and just go home. Thanks to Glenn we had the courage to approach the CNE in Toronto and secure a contract which OBO holds still. When we sold the company we unfortunately did not stay in regular touch but in 2012 I had an opportunity to get to know Lucien when he took a summer job at a facility I was managing. I could see much of his father in him and enjoyed the memories of our younger days. Glenn will be missed and remembered by many. Terry Payne
