CATHRYN ANN CHEREWYK

(née Chubala)

July 21, 1941 – August 18, 2025

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Cathryn Ann Cherewyk (née Chubala), aged 84, on August 18, 2025, at the Boyne Lodge Personal Care Home in Carman, Manitoba.

Cathy was born on July 21, 1941 in the north end of Winnipeg to the late Anna and Woytko Chubala. She was predeceased by her siblings, Mary and Stan.

In the spring of 1963, she married her high school sweetheart, Merv, and together they built a life filled with love, lots of laughter and countless memories at home, at the lake and in the company of family and friends. In addition to raising a family, Cathy also worked for 24 years as a corporate paralegal at MLT Aikins, where she was admired for her meticulous attention to detail, the thoughtful care she provided to her colleagues and the lawyers she worked with and the steady flow of baking she brought into the office.

Cathy loved tending to her garden and her flowers at home and at the lake but she especially loved building campfires and would spend hours feeding them day and night. She also loved cheering on/cursing the Jets and the Bombers with Merv and would spend countless hours watching curling (and the news) with him through all seasons. But without question, she was happiest when she was hosting, over-feeding her friends and family and doting over her grandchildren. She was well known for her one-of-kind dill pickles, her irrational fear of moths, her warm hospitality, her sweet and caregiving nature, and her joy in looking after others. Whether at work, home, or the lake, Cathy always made those around her feel well cared for.

Cathy will be forever cherished and missed greatly by her husband Merv; her son Chris (Kathie); her son Greg (Katharine); and her ‘sweetie pie’ grandchildren, Griffin and Juno.

A service and celebration of Cathy’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Saint Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boyne Lodge Personal Care Home in Carman, Manitoba. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Boyne Lodge for the extremely compassionate and loving care Cathy received during her final year.

Cathy’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Cathy was a beautiful person and I really enjoyed our time at the cabin and watching the news together. She was very loving, had the kindest heart and the best laugh. Cathy and Merv were very good to me and my parents and I know how much she meant to Merv, Greg and Chris. I am sure she was the best grandma. I am so sorry for your loss and thinking of you all.

Good neighbours become friends, great neighbours become family. Merv, you and Cathy have always felt like family. Armand and I hold dear the memories of our visits throughout the years. Cathy was truly a one of a kind lady. She was much loved and will be dearly missed. Big hugs to you and your boys.

We had the blessing of moving into Whitegates as Kathy and Merv's neighbors in 2006 and we were drawn to them immediately. I can still her here laughter and see the gardens she cared for. We are lucky to have known them and appreciate their kindness, warmth, and life lessons.

I had the blessing of being one of the neighbourhood kids who was loved by Cathy like I was one of her own. Years later, in my 20's, when my wedding was unexpectedly called off, and even though I hadn't spoken to her in years, she wrote me a letter filled with support and encouragement that truly got me through tough times. That feeling of unexpected love never left me, and encouraged me to give that back to others I have met in my life since. I am so lucky to have known her.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Merv and his family. We were neighbours of Merv and Cathy for four years. They have proven over time to have been the best neighbours we have ever had. It has been almost 40 years since that time and we still cherish the memories.. Our two older boys were specially close to Chris and Greg,

Anne and I continued our family friendship with annual exchanges of news and greetings.

Please accept our most sincere condolences.

We met Cathy and Merv in 1967, and our friendship continued over the years in spite of distance.. So many memories were made, Cathy was a wonderful lady and my daughter still talks about how she loved both of you and babysitting the boys.

i will never forget the good times we shared, even when Merv and Terry nearly drove us crazy with their antics. She leaves a void in the heart of everyone who knew her. So sorry for your loss, Merv and family

Deepest heartfelt sympathy to Merv and the family. I met Cathy around 1977 and we worked together for many years and travelled together to several paralegal conferences in Ontario and Nova Scotia. I know her family meant the world to her and Merv was her True Love. She'll be sorely missed.

I knew Cathy during our school years at Lord Nelson, Andrew Mynarski and Sisler High School. Lost touch when they moved to Brandon with Hydro. Then my husband Richard Gatien started golfing with Merv and we reconnected. We had fun evenings playing games. She will be missed. Our deepest sympathy to the family. God bless

My sincerest condolences to Cathy's family at her passing. I had the pleasure of working with Cathy at MLT Aikins for almost 19 years. She was a rare gem of a coworker who exuded kindness no matter how busy she was. This fellow North ender feels privileged to have known her.

Dear Merv, it was. sad to read of Cathy's passing this morning. It brought back so many memories of our working together at MTS and the chance running into you and Cathy in Casa Grande, AZ. Lunch dates in Winnipeg and the numerous e-card greetings .we received from you and Cathy over the years.

May God bless Cathy, you and your family.
