Robert Chetwynd
ROBERT “CHET” CHETWYND
November 18, 1945 – August 6, 2024
It is with a heavy heart that the family announce the sudden passing of Robert (Chet) Chetwynd, 78 years old on Aug 6th, 2024, in his hometown of Winnipeg MB. Chet was born on Nov 18th, 1945, the son of Archibald and Muriel Chetwynd in Lockeport Nova Scotia.
As a child and young teen Chet worked many side jobs while attending school. When he was 17 going on 18, he had a desire to join the Canadian Military. In 1964 he reached his goal and left to pursue his career in the military. During his time in the service, he met the love of his life Catharine, and they were married in July of 1966. The following year they welcomed their son Blair.
Chet’s military career saw him in many different roles and different locales across Canada and Overseas for special deployments. Although being very proud of his military career Chet retired from the military in the late 70’s and moved his family to Portage La Prairie where he was able to attain work as a long-haul driver.
Chet wasn’t happy with doing this as he had a burning desire and passion for cooking. He took the jump and became a baker with Safeway Canada. It was in this role when he truly realized he enjoyed the culinary arts. Before you knew it Chet was crafting and creating some of the most delicious dishes you ever had. Nothing lit his eyes up and smile more, than seeing people enjoying his food.
Through the years the family eventually moved to Winnipeg, and it was here where Chet was able to open and operate 2 catering companies and a restaurant. Chet’s passion for cooking was felt by many as he would do all the cooking for family gatherings and community events. No one went hungry when Chet cooked. Even neighbors would get their fill of dinners, desserts, snacks. His love for cooking was off the charts. If he wasn’t in the kitchen creating new recipes or trying new dishes, he wasn’t happy.
Chet retired around 2009 and sold off the business, but wasn’t enjoying the idle time. He pulled his chef’s jacket out of the closet and once again went back to the kitchen. For a spell he ran the kitchen at the Elmwood Curling Club and soon after he joined the crew at the Park West Hotel where he was able to pass on all his knowledge and see the successful rise of a Charleswood staple. He finally retired for good in June of 2022 when he couldn’t do the long hours anymore.
Another passion Chet enjoyed was going out with his best friend Fergie, hunting. Didn’t matter if it was big game or upland game/migratory birds. Just going out and enjoying the many trips to the “Shack” and telling many stories and making memories was the most enjoyable times of his life. He was hoping to get out on last time this year but even with the best laid plans he knew it wasn’t going to be possible. Last year he made one final trip with his son Blair and Grandson Gordon. He enjoyed that trip so much so that he was even talking about it a few weeks ago.
Throughout Chet’s life he met and maintained so many friendships. His friendships were his most valued possessions next to family. Some of his best friendships were made living in Portage when they joined the Vintage Cruisers Car Club. Chet loved his classic cars and the friendships he made during that time.
Chet had a loving heart and would give the shirt off his back to anyone. His humor was the best. He could make you laugh in a time of despair or at the most inappropriate time. He would tell jokes, pull pranks and get joy out of making others laugh. Chet had respect for many and was respected by many. He loved to pass on his knowledge to any who wanted to learn.
Chet was predeceased by his parents, Arch and Muriel Chetwynd; and his siblings, Dot, Betty, and Jaime. He was also predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years Catharine; infant son Bryce; and infant Great Grandson Jaxon.
Chet is survived by his son Blair Chetwynd (Lisa); Grandson Gordon Yestrau (Keri); Granddaughter Courtney Chetwynd (Mike); great grandchildren, Blake and Lily-Ann; and his furry companion for the last 4 years Molly girl. Chet is also survived by his brother-in-law George Smith (Dawn); sister-in-law Joan Kitchen (Gord); and many nieces and nephews.
To all who knew Chet/Bob/Chester,
he loved and cherished you all.
Although Dad wanted no funeral service, an informal celebration of life will happen from 1:00pm – 3:00pm on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at the Park West Hotel in the banquet hall, located at 525 Dale Blvd, Winnipeg, MB. Come out and raise one last drink to an incredibly amazing man.
Chet’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

so many amazing memories with Chester! Always knew how to light up a room! Him and my grandpa always were joking around and he always felt like he was apart of our family and made us feel like we were apart of his aswell.
the photo is from the day he got Molly and I decided to join for the joyous day! I remember how excited he was and I think I was just as excited.
this lead to house sitting/puppy watching while he was away hunting at the lodge. He always made sure to leave many yummy treats in the fridge for when I stayed. As a thank you, he gave me a beautiful necklace which I will cherish forever!
I also remember that he was the first person I reached out to for any cooking advice. Especially when I threw a wedding/birthday party. Chester took full reigns and I knew I could trust him fully. He would do anything in his power to relieve any stress, and that is exactly what he did!
Rest Easy Chester ❤️

So sad to hear. He taught me a lot about cooking . So many laughs had with him at Charleswood Golf Course. He showed me how to enjoy cooking so much I eventually became caterer at Charleswood years later. RIP Chet .

My deepest condolence! I loved serving food for Chet for military dinners. He ran a tight kitchen but we all laughed a lot and it never felt like work!
