EDWARD JULIAN CHEYS

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear father Edward Julian Cheys, at his home in Winnipeg MB May 8, 2022, at the age of 84.

Ed, or Eddie, as he was often called, was predeceased by his parents Julien and Bertha (Overwater) Cheys, his brother Robert, his son Brian, and his wife of nearly 35 years, Ollie Burrows (Prokipchuk) Cheys.  

Ed is survived by his sister Leona (Emile) Lacoste (Montreal), his first wife Leona (Grossman); his son Ray (Denise), grandchildren Amanda (Joel) and Lyndon (Kaitlyn); his daughter Kathy (Dave), his son Dave (Karen), grandchildren Brittany (Terence), Haley, and Addison, his daughter-in-law Bev, grandchildren Geoff (Meaghann), Mike (Meagan), Matt (Vicki), Jenn (Brent), and seven great grandchildren; Ollie’s children Dave (Genevieve) Burrows and grandchildren Victoria and Jacqueline, Brian Burrows and grandchildren Brayden and Rylan. Ed is also survived by his nieces and nephews, cousins, and the many friends he made throughout his life.

Ed was born and raised in St. Boniface. He began his career following in his father’s footsteps as a milkman at Modern Dairies before moving on to become a salesman for Old Dutch Foods, where he worked until his retirement. His friendly personality and outgoing nature made him well suited as a salesman, and he was well known as “Eddie the Chip Man” in Transcona. He earned top salesman accolades and was never more proud when his son Brian also became a salesman for Old Dutch Foods.

Ed and Ollie lived in Transcona for many years before retiring to enjoy full time life at their cottage at Breezy Point. He and Ollie were always very generous to all their Breezy Point neighbors. On many occasions they would host get togethers, fishing derby’s, BBQ’s and snow golf games, just to name a few. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful meals Ollie would make when they hosted their get togethers.

Ed really enjoyed fishing, lots and lots of fishing! Ed and his sons, his brother Robert, his uncle Albert, and friends Andy and Jack, spent hours fishing the Red River, or at Netley Creek. Whether it was by boat, shore fishing, or ice fishing, he always seemed to have some great catches and knew where the best spots were. Of course, there were lots of fish stories!

Ed was always very helpful to his friends at the cottage. On many occasions family would visit and find him building or fixing something at his place or helping a friend or neighbor. He was very generous with his time.

They moved from Breezy Point to Petersfield Manitoba in 2009 following extensive flooding in the Breezy Point area.

He loved feeding and watching the birds in their yard. He was an avid gardener and spent many hours tending to his gardens. He loved picking blueberries and chokecherries in the early hours of the morning with his friend Andy, often driving hours to find the right spot. They often came home with buckets of berries that he’d share with his family and friends and make chokecherry wine.

He and Ollie had several dogs and cats over the years, which he loved dearly. Ed even named his favorite cat “Eddie”.

Ed once again followed in his father’s footsteps and started shooting pole archery in the 1950’s and was a life member of the Robin Hood Pole Archery Club. He was happy to see his 3 sons become members as well. He held several records and was dedicated to the club, having served in several executive positions over the years. To this day, Ed is still one of the all-time top archers for Robin Hood.

He was very proud of his Belgian Heritage and was a Life Member of the Belgian Club in St. Boniface, where he spent many hours at the club with family and friends.

He was a longtime member of Selkirk Legion #42, where he served as President of the Over 60 Club for several years.

Ed was an avid bowler for many years at Chateau Lanes in Transcona. He enjoyed a good game of cards, especially crib, Rummoli, 31, chase the ace and many more. Ed loved to curl and watch curling on TV. He was also a big Toronto Blue Jays fan and spent many evenings watching them on TV.

Ed played hockey with the St. Boniface Buffaloe’s hockey club in 1956-57, along with his brother-in-law Emile LaCoste and Andy Deserranno. He continued to enjoy playing hockey in the beer leagues and coached a number of teams in the community, winning the Little NHL Champions in St. Boniface in 1971. He was a lifelong Jets fan and had an ongoing $2.00 bet with Emile in Montreal, every time the Jets and the Habs played against each other.

Anyone who knew Ed, knew he liked to have fun. He loved to joke around and was never one to shy away from being the life of the party. Ed touched the lives of many people over the years through gatherings with family and friends. He had a remarkable memory and told many wonderful stories of the old days and was known for his quick wit and humor.

Dad, you will be missed greatly and will be forever in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to one of dads’ favorite charities, The Salvation Army or a charity of one’s choice.

A celebration of Ed’s life will take place on Thursday, May 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. Internment will follow the service, family and friends are welcome. Afterwards family and friends are invited to join us for a luncheon at the Belgian Club, 407 Provencher Blvd, as we continue to celebrate Eddie’s life and share our memories.
