MORRIS JOSEPH JOHN CHURKO

Morris Joseph John Churko, Winnipeg MB; passed away unexpectedly and suddenly in his home, entering the spiritual world at the age of 76. He was pronounced deceased on November 13 2023.

Morris leaves to mourn his brothers Roman (Melanie Sabourin), David (Kathy Diacon), Mark (Valerie Protz), Ted (Susan Herde) and Reg (Joanne Exner), his sisters Mary Ann (Glenn Wouters) and Delphine Arnason (Tim) and sister-in-law Loraine (Merkosky) Churko (Dennis Forster) as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Family that pre-deceased Morris were his parents, Kazimer and Pauline (Widaiko) Churko of Melville SK and his brothers Ambrose and Victor.

Morris, the fourth oldest child in a family of eight boys and two girls, was born on September 7 1947 in Melville SK and was raised on the farm at Plain View SK.  He attended Plainview School to grade eight and completed his high school at St. Henry’s High School in Melville SK in 1966.

For five years after high school, Morris worked in the construction business for various companies.  He then attended Keewatin Community College in The Pas MB where he completed the Heavy Duty Mechanics course.  He moved to Winnipeg and worked as a diesel technician with Brown and Murray Ltd for 13 years.  Because of shortage of work at this firm, Morris left Winnipeg to work at Western Diesel in Brandon MB until 1995, after which he returned to Winnipeg continuing his work at Hitrac Ltd and then Western Turbo. He officially retired from the job but continued to work on-call for a few years.  He devoted over 55 years to work simply because he enjoyed it.

Outside of his work, Morris made regular trips to visit with his parents and other family members throughout the years.  He participated in activities such as curling, going to horse races, golfing and weightlifting.  Morris took interest in world events and loved to have knowledgeable conversations about them, whether they be about politics, religion, sports or the fine arts.  He took flute lessons for a few years, and enrolled in social dancing classes where he entered competition events.  He found pleasure in listening to music and attending concerts with a special interest in rock, classical, opera and jazz.  Morris loved watching old movies and followed sports on television.  Although he lived in Manitoba, he had a special fondness for the Saskatchewan Roughriders Football team. 

Morris loved Winnipeg as his home.  Mostly he loved his friends in Winnipeg, especially those who he met regularly for coffee, and those with whom he socialized at the Legion and at the Curtis Gordon Hotel.  The Churko family thanks them for being his other special family.

A private celebration of life and interment will be determined at a later date.
