SE’KWUN COCHRANE

Se’Kwun was called to join the Ancestors rather suddenly from St. Boniface Hospital’s critical care unit on Tuesday April 18, 2023 where she was sung home in ceremony with her family. Mukaday AssinIkwe is her Spirit Name, Black Rock Woman in English, Biizhew Ndodem, Peguis Ndoonjii. Se’Kwun called herself a Buddhist.

She is mourned by her family; mother Dorothy Daytese O’chiese, sister Ko’ona Saber (Willow Siobhan Cochrane - Magnus Bane), brothers Wabaningose Tim O’chiese (Kade, Charolette, Mazie & Rhyes Dingwell), Fred Schliephack. Se’kwun was preceded by her father Walter George Cochrane and her partner in life Wes Wallin. She cherished her lifelong friendships with family in the Ottawa Valley like Florence and Elaine of Minwaashin Lodge and many others who all miss and honour her passing. Se’kwun chose to leave child bearing to her relatives becoming Auntie to many and devoted Momma to her surviving furbabies Kiki and Starface.

An incredibly kind shining bright being despite the many challenges Se’kwun faced in her short 55 earthly years. Loved by all who knew her she embodied the most genuine of a Deadly Auntie in the community.

Her earliest formal education was in Yellowknife’s Youth Air Cadets which led her to many adventures with who became her Inuit northern families. Prior to that she had travelled all over North America with her mother pursuing the ways of our Ancestors in ceremony; then later in life on the Pow Wow trail throughout eastern Ontario, western Quebec and northern New York at times going down south to the panhandle. She was widely known on the Pow Wow trail as Midjim Catering creator of healthy alternatives like the Woking Taco, fruit on a stick and Berry Bear paws, along with her amazing bead work tabled upon Daytese Leather Crafts. The past several years health issues kept her at the beading table. Many now carry beautiful works of art she meticulously crafted one bead at a time from her fathers’ homestead in Peguis she lovingly called “The Lynx Den”.

As per Se’kwun's wishes, she was cremated and her family held sacred fires, singing for her expressing a never-ending love as the Ancestors invite her back to the realm of Spirit. On Tuesday June 6, 2023 Celebration of Life Ceremonies will be held in tandem one hosted by her spirit family of Ottawa and one at Peguis her homestead.

We kindly request that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Se'kwun really stood out as a joyful being even through difficult times. We got to know and appreciate each other in recent years. She was quick minded and picked up on energy. She was open about herself and her path. Accepting of others. I will remember her as an artist with a creative spirit. I cherish my beadwork she made. We came up with the idea between us and she cheekily called it sacred goth as she knew my spiritual  intention and personal style. She was a very special and unique person. Love to Ko'ona my dear friend and to her family. Good journey Se'kwun. I'm glad you were in my life even for the short time we were friends.
