LEAH BURNICE COLVIN

July 14, 1921 - July 3, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce that Leah Burnice passed away on July 3, 2021, 2 weeks shy of her 100th birthday.

Mom is survived by her children Don (Ronnie), and Dave (Barb); grandchildren Paul (Amanda), Jill, Andrea, and Maria and great grandson Oliver. Also mourning our loss are her many relatives and friends.  Leah will be particularly missed by her dear pals Lynne and Betty.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Ted (1984), son Mike (1997), siblings Ray (Helen), June (Stuart), Leora (Tom), and Murray and much-loved companion Clarence Schaeffer.

Leah was born in Winnipeg, July 14, 1921, and grew up in the west end of Winnipeg. In 1946 she married Ted and they made their home in Morse Place, where they raised their three sons. Although previously active in the arts, sports, and other community pursuits, Leah’s life took a fascinating turn after Ted’s passing.

Fiercely independent, and always one who enjoyed the company of others, 63-year-old Leah took it upon herself to move forward with her life. She began, by taking a new job (her first, outside the home, in 40 years) Then the adventures started. These included spontaneously joining a group of young adults on a five-day Mantario canoe trip and embarking on an extensive European vacation with her sister-in-law. Unfortunately, a notable aspect of the trip, was her being mugged in Milan. Not satisfied in the victim role, mom attempted to chase down the villain through the winding streets. Fortunate for him, he wasn’t caught.

Besides rekindling her love of volunteerism, oil painting, travel, skiing and curling, mom joined the Manitoba 60+ All-Stars, where she became a longstanding member of this Seniors baseball team based out of Kildonan Park. She enjoyed playing (alongside her partner “Schaef”) well into her golden years. Mom proudly stated that although she was the only woman in the league, she remained on the team because of her love of the game and skill at the plate…not out of pity. Her ability to run the bases at 84 was a particular point of pride.

There was no adventure that was beyond mom’s grasp and no challenge that she wouldn’t face head on, and always with a smile. She adored her family and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Leah’s family would like to extend our profound appreciation to the compassionate and trustworthy staff of Kildonan Personal Care Centre for their kindness and care. Along with others at KPC, Kam, Catherine, and Pam are particularly appreciated. Thank you so much.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.

In Accordance with mom’s wishes, cremation/burial has taken place and no formal service will be held. Leah’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. I would always look forward to the Colvins coming over for Boxing Day. The party merriment went over the top with her mirth and merriment with my  cuzzins in tow. I always wondered how many Big Band events were attended by her and Uncle Ted at Grand and Winnipeg Beach while being  serenaded by my Dad and his band mates.  My deepest condolences to all.

What a beautiful woman--inside and out! I strive to be like her! She had a wonderful, mischevious twinkle in her eyes! On one of our visits to Winnipeg when I was a young girl, she told me that she looked just like me when she was my age. Of course, as a kid, I was horrified! hahahaha. As I grew up, I realized I'd be lucky to have any of her qualities! The MN Edmand clan sends our love to you and Don and your families.

My first memory of Auntie Burnice was a trip to Winnipeg with Grandma (Leora) in the 80’s. My fondest memories of her are  from the summer I lived with her in 2008. Such a fun lady, she will be missed. My condolences to you all.

So many many memories of our moms friendship.  Times at Grand Beach and fireworks at your house every year.  But her fudge sticks out the most.  She made the best fudge and even tried to teach my mom, which did not work. My mom would actually hide it !  So sorry and lots of hugs to you all.

Dave and family.  Our condolences from Sandi and I. We will always remember your mom as being one of the classiest women we know.  We always looked for her at the bus stop on Henderson.

A beautiful tribute to a beautiful lady with a beautiful soul.  She will be fondly remembered by all who were fortunate to know her.  I have many happy memories of times spent with her, summers as a child in Winnipeg, a bus trip to Minnesota, Christmas Eve celebrations with the family at the Colvin home.  One of my favorite memories was when she visited New Mexico and went for a ride on my Clydesdale when she was 86.  Auntie B always had an adventurous spirit and was game for any new challenge. Condolences to Don, Ronnie, Dave and Barb and your families.  Thinking of you and sending hugs.

What an amazing tribute to Auntie Burnice, which is how we all knew her. I never knew her name was Leah until about 10 years ago. Our thoughts are with you all.

I only knew her as Leah when my father introduced her to me and my family. She was a lovely and elegant lady. I believe they met each other in 1990 and they were inseparable from then on. They enjoyed each others company whether it was playing old timers baseball or going on their many trips to Arizona. She will be missed. What a beautiful tribute. Our sincerest condolences to the family. Lynne Morin & family ( Clarence's / Schaef's daughter)
