SHARON LOUISE CONDIE

October 4, 1939 – May 19, 2025

It is with sadness that we announce that Sharon Condie passed away May 19, 2025, after over two years struggling with cancer.

Sharon was predeceased by her parents, Edith and Dick Condie; and survived by her brother Richard Condie; and his partner Shelley Sweeney.

Sharon was an original creative spirit who was a talented artist. “The object isn't to make art, [but] to be in that wonderful state which makes art inevitable." She was a voracious reader and writer on a broad range of subjects. She travelled widely through Europe.

She was born October 4, 1939 in Vancouver, BC. She studied Fine Arts and Interior Design at the University of Manitoba (1957- 1961). She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Graphics and Film History) at Concordia University in 1974 and a Bachelors of Arts degree in Women's Studies where she received the Gold Medal from the University of Winnipeg in 1997.

Sharon lived and worked in London in the swinging ‘60s before returning to Winnipeg. She received a Canada Council Explorations Grant to develop several drawing techniques for children’s books. She then wrote a treatment, did some animation, and painted the backgrounds for "John Law and the Mississippi Bubble" which was made into an animated short in 1978 for the National Film Board, with her brother Richard Condie as primary animator and director. She worked with her brother on two other films for the National Film Board, creating the backgrounds for "Getting Started" (1979) and "The Big Snit" (1985). “The Big Snit” won 17 awards and was nominated for an Oscar.

In 1981 Sharon co-directed Putting it in Perspective, a combined animation and live action video explaining perspective and optical illusion for Grade 10 Geometry students. This project won an Association for Media and Technology in Education Award in 1982. In later years she worked on a number of fiction and non-fiction writing and research projects.

Sharon’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I remember Sharon when we were together at the UofM. We were fellow members of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She was so gifted and talented. and generous too. She decorated colourful invitations and menus by hand. (No colour reproduction in those days.)
