JOANNE CONKLIN

November 17, 1952 - July 12, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce that our beloved Joanne passed away peacefully on July 12, 2021 after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer.

Joanne is survived by her husband of 48 years, Murray; children, Michael (Reena) and Amelie (Jason); grandchildren, Ayva, Rohan, Aidan, Coltan, and Emmett; siblings, Jim (Kathy), Jeannie, John (Elaine), Jan (Bernie), Larry (Dee), Jerry, Lori (Rob), and Geri (Rick); as well as many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her mother Rhea Collin.

Born in Indian Head, SK, Joanne spent her formative and teenage years in Thompson, MB where she excelled in athletics, earning a prized collection of ribbons and medals in various sports and on the track.  It was there that she met her future husband, Murray.  They married and settled in Winnipeg in 1972, raising their beloved children, Michael and Amelie, as well as their dearly loved dogs, Stealer, Cooper and Daisy.

In her working life, Joanne was a proficient stenographer and administrative clerk who worked for various banks and for the government of Canada.  Working to her own high standards brought her great satisfaction, but nothing compared in Joanne’s life to quality time with her family.  She celebrated the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren with pride.  Gathering for family brunches and dinners was a favourite pastime of Joanne’s as were the numerous family trips that she was so instrumental in planning.  Joanne had many wonderful adventures from coast to coast, through Western Europe., the U.K., Mexico, the Caribbean, Arizona, Hawaii, Alaska and even Egypt, to name a few.  Above all, her favourite trips were cruises, where unforgettable memories were made with her family.

Joanne was a gentle and doting Nana to her grandchildren.  It was a mission of hers to help recreate her own children’s summer bliss at a cottage retreat.  Many summers were spent looking for the perfect family cottage and she and Murray found just what she wanted 4 years ago at Victoria Beach, where the Conklin family has a long history.  The memories made there with Joanne will never be forgotten.

She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.  Joanne’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

In accordance with Joanne’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.  A private celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021.  Regrettably, the pandemic obliges us to limit numbers.

Should family and friends wish, in her memory, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or UNICEF’s #GiveAVax Covid-19 Match Fund.

I've been thinking of you & your children, Murray, since I learned of this sad news about Joanne on Saturday evening.  I am so very sorry. Please know that I and Scott & Jen remember our own situation 25 years ago & so have a sense of how very hard this time must have been for you & Michael & Amelie. We hope that as these coming weeks & months pass, you'll be able to remember Joanne as she was in all those years before. From her obituary, Joanne reminds me very much of the kindness that the Conklin family showed me at the Guildford St house & up at Victoria Beach back in the 1960s.  Condolences & best wishes, John

I am so sorry for this huge loss you have suffered.  Joanne created a very loving home and family and these are a tribute to her warm heart and kind spirit.  I recall being with Joanne over the years at Victoria Beach.  She was lovely to be around as she was very kind, and calm, and fun.  Especially amidst the large gatherings of family and friends, kids, dogs, and a bit of summertime chaos.   With time the pain will diminish but the memories and love will grow.

We have always found Joey to be welcoming, warm and friendly.  Most of our meetings in recent years were down at Victoria Beach, and fortunately we were able to visit Mur and Joey at their new cottage at VB for a few summers before the pandemic.  Joey always took the trouble to make a wonderful meal many times, a difficult task with limited facilities, reminiscent of the large full course meals we used to enjoy at 127 Sunset, Murray and I serenading with “Ole Man River” as we toiled with the greasy pans over the small sink.  Great times, and we will always associate Joey with these great memories When we lose someone special, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind.   Nona, Bob, Chris and Mimi Conklin

The beautiful obituary and photographs bring back a flood of memories for me, of Joanne and family at Victoria Beach. Joanne always seemed to embody good humor, kindness, and serenity. I can well imagine that the celebration on July 28 will be a bittersweet occasion as memories of this fine woman are shared. I send my love to all of the family.
