CARMELLE ELIZABETH CRYMBLE

May 15, 1963 - May 11, 2022

With heavy hearts, we announce that Carmelle passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on May 11, 2022, in the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative care unit at the age of 58 years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 32 years Terry; daughters Alyssa and Caitlyn; brother Richard (Barbara) and many other extended family members and friends who loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her Parents Victor and Yvonne Fredette.

Carmelle was the oldest of two children, raised in Winnipeg Manitoba where she attended Viscount Alexander and Vincent Massey Collegiate. She went on to pursue a degree in Nursing at the University of Winnipeg. She later met her husband Terry in 1986 at Carmelle’s friend Francine’s house and the two got married in 1989. Carmelle and Terry spent the next few years travelling before having their oldest daughter, Alyssa. They took trips to Jamaica, B.C. and Banff before purchasing their first home together and starting a family. Five years after Alyssa was born, they had their second daughter Caitlyn.

Carmelle was a nurse at St. Boniface Hospital for over 30 years until her retirement in 2017. She had a passion for helping others- whether that was her patients, friends, or family. She had an extremely kind heart and always put others before herself. She also had a very fun and goofy side to her. She had a good sense of humor and loved to laugh. Carmelle was loyal and very loving, living her life judgement free. She was easy to talk to, gave excellent advice, and was always willing to lend an ear to listen. She was very proud of her two girls and was actively involved in their schools over the years helping at field trips and the school lunch program, despite working full time at the hospital. She always made time for her girls no matter what and would spend hours playing with them when they were little. Carmelle loved the outdoors and could most often be found working in her garden at home or out for walks with friends or her husband Terry. She spent most of her days reading, watching scary movies and true crime documentaries, and cheering for the Winnipeg Jets on TV. She was a great lover of animals- particularly the family dog “Maya” whom she would spend much time with outside in summer working in the garden.

Carmelle loved spending time with her friends and family and enjoyed going on vacation. Her favourite trip was when she and her family drove to California where they spent time swimming in the ocean, at Disneyland and exploring the Redwood Forest. Carmelle also enjoyed a trip to B.C. with her friends Barb, Sue, and Francine this past summer who were greatly cherished friends. Carmelle also enjoyed spending time with close friends Joanne, Brynne, Jody and Christie. One of her favourite times of year was Christmas eve, where husband Terry’s extended family would get together at their house and exchange gifts and eat Christmas baking. She loved baking with her two girls for Christmas and would always decorate extensively. She always made sure to decorate the entire house for every holiday and birthday. This is a tradition that will be carried on by her family.

As per her wishes, a tree will be planted in Carmelle’s honour at King’s Park in Winnipeg, where she loved to go for walks with her friends and family. A formal service will not be held but a celebration of life will take place with close family and friends this summer.

Carmelle's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Carmelle was my first friend at St. Boniface Hospital when I started nursing in 2009 and she remained one of my closest work friends for the 8.5 years that I was there. She was always there for me, showing me the ropes and never making me feel dumb for not knowing how to do something. She always connected so well with the new nurses on the ward because she was so easy going and never passed any judgment. We spent many happy car rides together riding to and from work. She was an amazing listener and gave me tons of advice, especially after my kids were born. She loved kids and babies and always had treats for my boys whenever she came to visit. To her patients, she was the sweetest nurse with a beautiful bedside manner. Never afraid to stand up for what she believed in, Carmelle was always willing to stick her neck on the line for her colleagues. I remember this especially on the weekends when she was in charge of the ward. I can remember listening to her outside the office door while she was on the phone with the hospital supervisor, giving them a piece of her mind for the rest of us. I did keep in touch with her after her retirement and I was able to have breakfast with her some time before covid started, so I’ll hang on the that memory. Terry, Caitlyn and Alyssa, you were everything  to her. She loved her family fiercely and never stopped talking about her beautiful girls. I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. I’ll never forget her 💜.

I have many memories of Carmelle from my childhood as I grew up close friends with her daughter, Alyssa. Carmelle was always the one taking us girls (Alyssa, Caitlyn, myself and my younger sister) on fun day trips, whether it was to Tinkertown or Fun Mountain. She was such a caring person. I am very sorry to hear of her passing. My condolences to Terry, Alyssa, Caitlyn and extended family and friends.

We will miss our Auntie Carmelle very much. She made our family Christmas Eve so special and we looked forward to it most of all during the holidays. Gillian loved making her hash brown casserole for Christmas Eve snacks and we loved fighting family over the shrimp ring and the great cookies the girls made every year. Auntie Carmelle made the kids feel so special anytime we saw her. She was always first to sit on the floor and play with Darius and Georgia when they were little- often passing up adult conversation for kid time. We both remember Terry and Carmelle’s wedding and thinking she looked like a princess. She always asked how we were doing and took a genuine interest in the answer. We loved getting together at family events and conspiring in the corner over something that led to laughter. We will miss her love and humour at family events so much. We are better for knowing her and warm memories will always be with us. Love from Marni and Gillian

I worked on the same patient unit at St. Boniface Hospital for ten years. Carmelle always stopped by the admin office as she came in for her shifts and we would always share hugs. Carmelle gave the best hugs ❤❤ Though I did not see her since she retired from St. Boniface, I thought of her often. My deepest condolences to her husband, daughters and extended family and friends.

Carm and I always called ourselves Big Losers, but I won when I became her friend.  Some of my best laugh-out-loud moments were with Carm - sleeping in a car at the lake because we were too proud to tell anyone we didn't have a place to stay, hours spent getting ready to go out (often the best part of the evening), and late night stops at Salisbury House!  When I think of Carm, I think of laughter.

I worked at Bonnycastle School where Alyssa and Caitlyn attended. Carmelle volunteered there, always with enthusiasm and a friendly smile. Such a caring, supportive mom and a lovely lady.  My sincerest sympathy to the family.

While our hearts are hurting for Terry, Alyssa & Caitlyn they are also hurting for the rest of us who loved Carmelle so much. Christmas Eve was a favourite family gathering made all the more special by Carmelle's excitement. Who knew a $10 gift swap could cause so much rivalry in a loving family like ours! The last Christmas Eve we were all able to gather was 2019 & there was Carmelle sitting in front of the fire with Jessica & Emily watching Dr. Pimple Popper videos & laughing till the tears ran down their faces. So many precious memories of our beautiful, thoughtful Carmelle. Rest in Peace....we will love you forever! Renee, Bill & family
