ERIC (RICK) RAYMOND DAHLIN

March 15, 1947 – September 27, 2023

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Eric (Rick) Raymond Dahlin, on September 27, 2023, with family by his side.

Rick was born in 1947 to Gunnar and Ruby Dahlin, a couple that was known for their endless love and warm, inviting home. “All these places have their moments,” but it’s not often you come across a home with such a wonderful atmosphere that all who experienced it still speak about it with awe more than half a century later. From this magical home, Rick is predeceased by his parents; and his siblings, Linda and Ron. He is survived by his siblings, Dennis, Judy (Ray), Larry (Sharon), James, Colleen, Lorne, Diane (Bernie), Myrna (Doug), Brent, and Brian; as well as brother-in-law Lorne.

Growing up, Rick enjoyed playing guitar while his dad accompanied him on the banjo or accordion, or jamming late into the night with his friends. He also enjoyed early morning fishing with his dad, and laughed about the nights sneaking upstairs only to wake up to fish as soon as his head hit the pillow. He “got by with a little help from his friends,” and although he was a man who later preferred to stay comfortable in his home, he always held a special place in his heart for all his dear friends from his Ross Avenue and CN Rail days, and for good neighbours over the years.

When Rick was 18, he met the love of his life, Laverne. It was love at first sight for Rick. However, his early attempts at impressing Laverne were…colourful. For example, while choosing a horse on a horseback riding date, “he caught a good one that looked like it could run.” Unfortunately, Rick was not a “wild young cowboy,” and had actually never ridden a horse before, which probably would have proven useful when the unbroken horse startled and took off with him on it. Eventually, all his efforts paid off and Rick and Laverne married in 1968 and “built a home sweet home.” Rick is survived by his wife Laverne; and the second loves of his life, daughter Penny (Lorne); and granddaughter Miranda (Randy).

Rick’s family was his whole world, and they each shared a very special bond. He passed on his love of music to “the girls” and spent countless hours singing to them, planning a good-natured prank with them, and talking about them to anyone who would listen. Not a day went by without him asking, “and how are the girls?” Rick also joins his brothers-in-law, Terry and Emile Bourcier; and is survived by sisters-in-law, Yvonne (Mike), Theresa (Brian), Judy, and Patti; brothers-in-law, Andy (Lyndie) and Luke (Donna), as well as many nieces and nephews.

Rick was an electrician at CN Rail for 34 years and enjoyed his career. In his words, “if you find a job you like, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Outside of work, he enjoyed baseball and tennis in his younger years, crosswords in his later years, and Mustangs and music always.

Rick was a quiet but strong-willed guy with a huge heart and a wicked sense of humour. He always had a story that could make you laugh, and he was a man fluent in two languages: English and song lyrics. He could pull out the perfect song lyric as a response in any conversation. “With love from us to you,” Rick, we’ve snuck in a few references to your favourite tunes here. Following his wishes, there will be no funeral service. Play your favourite Beatles song for him, “talk about some old times,” hug your loved ones, and as he would say, "keep your stick on the ice."

Laverne, Penny and Miranda -- we couldn't have ever asked for better neighbours!  The slide show you created in Rick's memory was a beautiful tribute, filled with moments that showcased his warmth, humour, the love he shared and his guitar! we re glad to have known Rick.  Hugs

Dear Laverne and family, please accept my condolences on Ricks passing. Rick and I grew up together on Ross Ave and I still remember him trying to teach me a few chords on his electric guitar. His quick wit and easy laugh will always be remembered along with Okee Dokee.

My condolences to the Dahlin family, as a fellow CN worker Rick was a special friend that I could count on for a good game of tennis on our days off.
