DELMINDA DA SILVA
October 14, 1942 – January 14, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved wife, mother, and avó, Delminda Da Silva, on January 14th, 2025, at the age of 82. She leaves behind her devoted husband of over 59 years, Apolinario; sons, Pascal and Michel; daughter, Sabrina, and son-in-law, Jim. She was a proud grandmother to Levi, Isabella, and Alexandra who meant the world to her.
Born in Portugal, Delminda from a young age was known as the ‘Belle of the town’ to which many boys would have wanted to court, but she always had eyes for Apolinario. At 17, mom moved to Cote d’Azul, France where she worked as a waitress and nanny. One year later, Dad moved to Paris where he found her a job so she could be closer to him. Soon after, he was called to serve in the army where they remained in contact with countless love letters for over 2 years. When he returned from service, they married and welcomed their 2 sons soon after. When the boys were about 5 and 4 years old, they took a leap of faith and moved to Canada, the land of opportunity. Despite not knowing a word of English, Delminda was determined to adapt to the new culture and learned the English language during the day while working nights at her cleaning job. Her hard work and dedication paid off, and she eventually became a proud Canadian citizen. Several years later they were both surprised and and overjoyed by the arrival of their daughter.
Upon arriving in Canada, Delminda and her family became involved with the Casa do Minho Portuguese Cultural Centre, which became like a second home and family to them, easing their transition to a new country. She enjoyed volunteering her time at the centre, doing various roles ranging from helping in the kitchen & dancing and singing at the events throughout the year. Her most notable contributions were spearheading “Os Tradicionais” dance group and managing the souvenir booth at Folklorama.
It was always Delminda's dream to visit "the Holy Land". Her dream came true in 2000 when she embarked on a trip, all by herself, to Isreal. Delminda had a big love for food and was fortunate to have a husband who cooked the most amazing meals for her (who she claimed she taught him how to cook!) Some of her favourite foods included oysters and Black Forest cake. Her ultimate favourite would be keeping the meat bones and fish heads that she would enjoy by herself when no one was looking. Known for her honest nature, she never shied away from telling someone if they had "put on weight". With an adventurous spirit, she would plant every seed she could find, from kiwi to banana to apricot, just to see if it would grow.
Delminda was always the life of the party, often starting off a crowd song or dancing folklore. Her signature trait was her infectious laugh which brought joy and laughter to everyone around her. This past August, Delminda travelled to Portugal and spent a month with her family, including most of her brothers and sisters that she rarely got to see. It brought her great joy to be surrounded by her loved ones.
Although her passing was sudden with no time to say goodbye, we are comforted knowing she is without pain and at peace.
Descanse em paz maezinha – We miss you and love you always!
Prayers for Delminda will be said at 7:00pm on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Parish, 181 Austin St N, Winnipeg. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 pm on Friday, January 24, 2025 at Immaculate Conception Parish, 181 Austin St N, with Monsignor Maurice Comeault the celebrant. Interment will follow the Mass in Assumption Cemetery.
Delminda’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I am soo sorry for your loss and a loss for our entire community. She was one of kind, always looking after us kids growing up with tough love.
I just wanted to share that whenever I hear a Portuguese song, with like women singing (Fado I think it’s called. I’m such a bad Portuguese) I always think of your mom! And I know a lot of us do, so she and her spirit will live for a long time!
Our deepest condolences to everyone.
❤️❤️❤️

Delminda with one of her favourite neighbours making wine from grapes from our yards!
What to say about Delminda….. there isn’t enough space here to mention everything.
Delminda and her family were very close with my family and I . Delminda was a great friend ; she helped me during my husband’s long illness and continued after he passed . She always made sure I had healthy meals , kept me company and occupied. She was always there for me.
She spend many hours helping me with my daughter’s food preparation for her wedding.
We were involved with folklorama at Casa do Minho Portuguese cultural centre , we rely on each other for help. We were part of amateur theatre and plays , Christmas singing. I assure you, my best memories from these events , as well gatherings at her house, are of Delminda’s infectious laugh and misgapes that she covered up with even more funny lines.
She’ll loved coming to my husband to discuss gardening and compare which tomatoes were bigger…..
Gone but not forgotten .
REST IN PEACE Delminda
