MARJORIE DAVIS

Peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, it is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Marjorie Davis on Sunday November 20, 2022, at 8:45 p.m. surrounded by her family, at the Grace Hospice, Winnipeg. Marjorie passed away at the age of 79.

Marjorie, beloved wife of the late Reyn Davis, is survived by her son Dustin Davis (Jackie & Kane) and daughter Shannon Davis (Shanelle).  Also, grieving her loss are her sisters Bernice Carlson, Belle Dosdoll, Fern Hamilton, Leonna Meckley and Deanna Taylor.  In addition, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as her friend Marilyn Taylor (who often she referred to as “another sister”). Marjorie had many lifelong friendships and treasured her friends.

Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Reyn Davis; brother Jack Taylor; and sisters, Margaret Taylor and Eleanor Rutherford; brothers-in-law Wes Bowler, Art Davis and Andy Rutherford; sisters-in-law Judy Davis and Joan Taylor; mother Blanche Taylor and father Ted Taylor; and her parents-in-law, Ruth and Roy Davis.

Marjorie’s early life began on a farm in the St. Hubert District, Saskatchewan.  It was here she learned a strong work ethic, life skills and about everlasting family bonds. Marjorie grew to be a generous, capable, loyal, caring woman – exhibiting shrewd wisdom throughout her life. School in a rural setting meant that she and her older brother Jack would team a wagon of horses to get to school. Marjorie completed grades 9 and 10 by correspondence and when they moved to Whitewood Saskatchewan, she completed her grades 11 and 12.

Following graduation she took a year off and waitressed before enrolling at the Grey Nuns School of Nursing in Regina, Saskatchewan. It was in Regina where she met the love of her life, Reyn Davis.

Marjorie’s nursing career spread across three provinces – Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Manitoba. In Manitoba, she worked in three different hospitals – Misericordia, Deer Lodge and The Grace Hospital until she took a leave from nursing in 2001 to care for her ailing husband.

Over the years Marjorie’s many skills and interests kept her active in the community.  She curled at the Assiniboine Curling Club in the winter and golfed at Breezy Bend Country Club and Bridges Golf Course with her friend Cookie Essery. Marjorie also taxied her children and grandchildren to their events and was always their biggest cheerleader – and sometimes coach!

Marjorie was amazing in the kitchen. People constantly raved about her cinnamon buns!  She was skilled on a sewing machine as well, and that benefitted many around her. Marjorie’s last sewing projects were winter capes and she dressed her sisters, friends, daughter and local craft show customers in her gorgeous capes. For years, Marjorie also sold Mary Kay cosmetics to her “Mary Kay” friends. She had an eye for beauty and presented herself with elegance and grace always.

Marjorie is also known for her love of Caesar cocktails! She and her husband Reyn barely missed a day to drink one before dinner. She even enjoyed the odd one at the Grace Hospice!

In 2001 Marjorie became a grandmother and again in 2010.  Her love and devotion to both her grandchildren - Shanelle and Kane was evident.  She treated both grandchildren and families to trips to Florida and Disney World. Shanelle and Marjorie often travelled together whether to Saskatchewan or Alberta or Ontario. They even got matching heart tattoos in one trip to Alberta. Kane and Marjorie spent many Wednesday afternoons together baking, playing scrabble and hanging out. Marjorie always had time for her grandchildren and loved spending time with them and their friends!

Our family would like to thank Dr. Scott and Dr. Rumboldt for their advice and care. We also would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Cancer Care. A special thanks to the health care aids, nurses and staff at Riverview Health Centre and the Grace Hospice.  We will always be grateful for Salina at Riverview.

Dustin and Shannon would like to thank Assiniboia Downs for their support and compassion during this past year of Marjorie’s illness.

A celebration of her life is planned for 11:30 AM on April 29, 2023 at Assiniboia Downs. In the meantime, Marjorie's’s family kindly requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions  made to the Arthritis Society of Canada would be sincerely appreciated by the family.

I feel so lucky to have known Marj. I have such great memories with her taking Shanelle and I all over the place as kids, doing fun activities and eating her yummy baking❤️

Ah, the memories. We met Reyn and Marj as members of Hilary Blues Baseball teams. So many good times. ‘Box meetings’; curling; golfing; trips to Minneapolis; New Year’s Eve celebrations the list goes on. I will think of her every time I make one of her excellent recipes. Thinking of you Dustin, Shannon and your families.

So many good memories.  Marj and I met as hockey moms and as Mary Kay Consultants  over 40 years ago.  Our husbands played baseball with the Crestview League on opposite teams. We had great lunches and many chats over the years.  She was so organized, a hard worker and an amazing friend, mom, grandma, confidant, decorator, seamstress, cook, and nurse.  She made the best nuts and bolts and had to get the recipe, and always think of her when I make them as it  became a family favorite. She was one of my first hostess and supportive of my Norwex  business.  I miss her.  Hugs and Love to all who are grieving her passing and as we remember a great person and lady.

My heart goes out to you Shan, Dustin and all the family.  Mrs D was one in a million.  I have some of  my fondest memories as a teenager spending time with Shan at their house on Danbury, and so many funny good  times around Mrs Davis.  I remember so many wonderful  things about her, Mrs Davis’ beautiful living room decor, and she always had it so neat and pretty (with her Victorian style couches and tables); I remember her coming home after a nursing shift in her nursing attire,, she was so cute, and always, after having worked a long shift would be offering to make us snacks or treats. I remember raiding the downstairs freezer for some sort of yummy snack she always had made and hidden in there…but Shan and I would always sniff it out! She was just simply,  the best…I loved her like another mom, and I’ll never forget the fun and laughs we had when Shannon, myself, my mom Cookie and Mrs D were able to curl together at deer lodge for a few years…that was the best! And her laugh…when she laughed she made you laugh…you just couldn’t help it…she was just the sweetest human.  I feel bad for not having kept in closer contact over the years, they seem to have just flown by.  Mrs D will be missed, by so many, the world is less today because she isn’t here…Mrs Davis, you were one special lady. ❤

I have met Marj working at the Grace Hospital.   She was so hospitable whenever I dropped by.  I have fond memories baking meat pockets.  For years we got together before Christmas to make them.  We went for lunch at least once a month.  I will really miss her.  My deepest condolences to the whole family.

I also met Marj and Reyn through the Hillary Blues team on which my late husband played. Although our acquaintance was brief, I enjoyed the time spent in her company and thought she was just a lovely person - my sincere condolences to Dustin, Shannon and families. Marilynn Slobogian
