JOHANNA DE VOS

October 30, 1932 – November 17, 2023

Johanna de Vos passed away on November 17, 2023.  She was at peace, having expressed her comfort in the assurance of entering God’s rest before she slipped away in the small hours of the morning, clear and aware and full of spirit to the end.

Having just started her 92nd year, Mom lived a full life.  She was a beloved wife, Mom, Oma, Nana, daughter, and sister and although her family is scattered around the globe, she strove to stay in touch, remembering birthdays, anniversaries and other important dates with calls and handmade cards.  She was the treasured wife of the late John de Vos and is lovingly remembered by all of us: David (Alie), Paul (Kinske), Cathy (Bill), Wilma (Rick), Theo (Clara), Bart (Jurrina), Sarah (Chris) and Joanne (Scott). She was also blessed with 33 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and was so pleased to know that three more great grandchildren are on the way.

Mom was born in Capelle a/d Ijssel, The Netherlands in 1932.  Her early years were lived during the second world war, which shaped her perspective and resourcefulness until her last days.  She trained and worked as a nurse, and after marrying John, they emigrated to Canada in 1958.  They eventually settled in Sardis (BC) where we were born and raised in the house on Prest Road.  In 1982, they moved to Winnipeg where she’s lived the past 41 years.  After Dad’s passing in 1995, Mom lived on her own until her final month.  While always grateful for support and help from the family and her church family, she was fiercely independent, assuring us in no uncertain terms that she could take care of herself.

Mom was an independent thinker and curious about everything.  She followed the news and current events and had a clear point of view which she was willing to share.  At the same time, she had a keen interest in literature, prose, and poetry.   She was a true creative, with a lifelong love of all thing’s textile; weaving, spinning, sewing, and knitting.

She showed her love and care for each of us through this art.  Even in her last months she had set up her large loom and was weaving placemats for her grandchildren.  While she called herself Jacob Two-Two because she often said she had to do things at least twice, her beautiful woven work lives on in our homes as a part of her legacy.

Her strength of character, wisdom, faith, and love are examples for all the generations in our family and we will miss her dearly.

Private Interment.

Service to be held at 2:00pm on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Redeemer Canadian Reformed Church (15 Bates Avenue).

The Weaver

My life is but a weaving

Between my Lord and me,
I cannot choose the colors

He worketh steadily.

Oft times He weaveth sorrow
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I, the underside.

Not till the loom is silent

And the shuttles cease to fly
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the Weaver's skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.

My condolences to the family, I have a great memory of your mom, I was happy to have filled a small need in her life, one of which was lending her some clamps for one project or another. Quite a few years ago I also had an opportunity to properly glue back together her favourite old wooden chair that she likely used everyday since then, the joyful look on her face when she picked up it up was priceless.

An amazing lady that was capable of doing almost anything. Visited her very often. Checked out her loom and weaving apparatuses and heard many stories of what she manufactured. Even her little retreat which she made. Even made her own windows. We helped her with roof but she insisted on shingling it herself. Her faith in her God is  eternal life with her God now. Much strength on Dec.1 when you lay her body to rest.

Joop and I became friends from the first time we met, at age 6 in Capelle a/d IJssel. Our family had just arrived from the north of the country and were invited by her parents for dinner and Joop and I were placed next to each other. In spite of the war we both had a happy time growing up. When she was being trained as a nurse at Eudokia Hospital in Rotterdam, she visited our home very regularly in her spare time. I often caught her in deep conversation with my mother when I came home. She was indeed very eager to learn and developed herself very well. She was wise and intelligent. She told me she learned the language by reading Shakespeare. Just imagine! It was a great loss to me when she left for Canada. My father and I saw her off at Rotterdam Central Station. Over the years we kept in touch. After they moved to Winnipeg she came over to Holland for visits and we met again several times and always she remained the same steady friend, although our lives were so very different. And then in the early nineties I was invited to stay at their place for several weeks! This has been an unforgettable experience for me. I still have my diary of that time and two albums with photo's.They made me feel very welcome. On top of it all we made a  really grand road trip to visit some of the children (maybe you still remember it Wilma!) up to Vancouver and Seattle (Theo), across the border and back to Winnipeg via o.a. Yellowstone park. All the time during my stay John has been so nice, entertainig and interested in everybody's wellbeing. Joop must have been counting her blessings with him. Thanks to the Lord for these parents, who raised you in the faith and set such a good example. With my sincere condolences and thanks for the lovely pictures, Wilma's loving memoriam and the poem. I won't forget our road trip to Coaldale.  Your mom, Joanne and I headed for two days. They went to a wedding and I attended a family reunion. Drove there in one day. Stayed overnight in Saskatchewan somewhere on the way back. She hauled out some wine, cheese and crackers. So fun. She wouldn't let me contribute to gas or anything, so generous.

Many good memories of times spent with your Mom and Dad! Their home was so welcoming, the conversation lively, the meals delectable and there was always something just that bit different underway in their ( and later, her) lives! Their faith and love for the Lord was openly shared! My condolences to the family.

A beautiful tribute to your mom. So many memories came up I couldn’t keep a dry eye watching her life go by. Wish you all strength but happiness as well as she lived life to the fullest and had all of you in it.

❤I remember with fondness visiting your home on Prest Road on several Sundays.  We'd be camping at Cultus, and enjoyed the generous hospitality--even to the extent of doing our laundry when we had too much rain soaked clothing! Our sincere condolences!

What a stunningly beautiful video capturing Mom DeVos’s heart, passion, spirit, creativity and faithful legacy. She left an indelible mark on me and I cherish many, many profoundly happy memories in your home. And to say that I learned much from her would be an understatement. Thank you for sharing this beautiful video with us. I am thankful with all of you that the comfort of salvation in Jesus was hers and that while our earthly goodbyes are sad and difficult, we can grieve with Hope. I am grieving and rejoicing with you all. All my love, Audrey
