GORDON WILLIAM DEACON

February 28, 1953 – August 8, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gord Deacon, age 72, at home on Friday, August 8, with his beloved wife, Cathy, at his side.

Celebration of Life, followed by a reception, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 16 at the Salvation Amy Heritage Park, 825 School Road, Winnipeg.

Although he had a gruff exterior, Gord was a sentimental old soul who loved his large extended family, including his grandparents, parents, seven siblings, in-laws, aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and of course, his wife of almost 51 years. He and Cathy looked forward to hosting large family gatherings several times a year in their home and back yard. He had a small circle of close long-time friends who meant the world to him.

Gord had a memory that astounded everyone. He could turn any conversation into a history lesson and could quote poetry he learned in high school. He could have won on Jeopardy and always won at Trivial Pursuit. He spent hours watching old black and white movies, with Casablanca being one of his favourites.

In his younger years, he hitch-hiked across western Canada and Europe, in later years travelling in style on his Honda GoldWing with Cathy behind him “down home” to Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, and to Southern California.

His quick wit, dry sense of humour, and sarcasm were legendary and brought smiles and laughter to any gathering of family and friends.

Gord’s career was varied and interesting. He was in retail management, including opening and managing the first Princess Auto store in Saskatoon, parts manager at Vicon Cereal Implements in Portage la Prairie, and inventory planner at New Flyer Industries in Winnipeg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army Heritage Park, 825 School Road, Winnipeg, R2Y 0S5.

Gord’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Dear Cathy,

Rick and I want to give our deepest sympathy to you and all of the family. Gord will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We were so glad that we were able to see both of you more often when we moved back to Winnipeg. We enjoyed our dinners together, always with great conversations and lively discussions afterwards. We will truly miss Gord.

Hi Cathy. I was sitting here in Guelph this evening thinking back on my memories of Gord. The little grin he gave when he dropped a word of wisdom is an endearing memory. Laurie and I will be thinking of you and praying for you tomorrow. Will there be tambourines?

Dear Cathy,

Me and my whole family are deeply saddened by Gord's passing. You and Gord have been dear friends to us and even for the short time we have known each other it feels like its been a long time friendship. I can even remember when we had just moved in to our home and it was peak winter, we were having huge trouble clearning the show and Gord had come and lended your snow blower to make it easier for us. Those little moments left a huge impact on us and we always cherish these last few years and grateful to have you two in our lives. These bonds come once in a lifetime, but the time we did share with him, we will cherish for a life time. Thank you for being such a good friend and if we can help in any way, please please please dont hesitate to reach out.

With deepest sympathies,

Alpana, Purna, Swayam.

Dear Cathy,

I am so deeply saddened by Gord’s passing. For over 50 years, you and Gord have been dear friends to Dan and me. When Dan’s world grew smaller, Gord was a constant light—faithfully visiting, sharing laughter, and even singing with him when words became difficult. That kind of steadfast friendship is a rare gift, and I will always treasure the joy and comfort Gord brought to Dan in his final years.

Please know my heart is with you in this time of loss. May you find comfort in the love Gord gave so generously, and in the countless lives he touched, mine and Dan’s among them.

With deepest sympathy,
Marlene

As one of Ken's oldest friends, Gord has been in my life for over 50 years. There are so many memories - evenings at Gord and Cathy's, music and Monty Python, board games and laughter. The summer everyone got motorcycles, his deep caring for his friends. So despite the tears there are smiles too. He will be missed.
