DAVID JAMES DECUYPERE

November 4, 1959 – September 15, 2025

It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of David DeCuypere on September 15, 2025, at Health Sciences Centre.

David is survived by his mother, Henrietta DeCuypere; brother, Michael, and his wife, Joane; nephew, Nicolas Laurencelle, his wife, Jamii, and their daughter, Tora; as well as many cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended family.

David worked at the Dakota Community Centre / Jonathan Toews Sportsplex. He enjoyed traveling on road trips all over the south and camping. Dave had a dog named Shady, and as she grew older and could no longer walk, Dave would sometimes take an hour to carry her down the stairs, place her in a wagon, and take her for a walk. Dave joked at Health Sciences Centre, when we visited and took him outside in his wheelchair, that we would walk him like he did for Shady Lady.

Dave spent time in Texas with Calvary Commission. He also served in the army medical unit as a teenager and spent time in Belize helping to build homes.

Dave was a very spiritual person and a member of Springs Church. He fought this horrible disease, ALS, while praying for a miracle.

A service for Dave will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Springs Church located at 725 Lagimodiere Blvd in Winnipeg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society of Manitoba in Dave’s memory.

Dave’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

My condolences to those who knew and loved David. He was my favourite cousin: I used to hang out with him at his place in Windsor Park often, before moving to Ottawa in 1971.

Here are two photos: Fishing at Lake of the Woods in 1971, and my wedding reception in May 1987. David was kind enough to escort Grandma DC to my wedding. It was great to be reunited with the two people I loved most on the DeCuypere side of the family!

I was priviledged to be one of David's teachers at Beliveau Jr. High. enjoyed him as a student and an interesting person. He was willing to try new things, like Tae Kwon Do, and give it his best effort. I see he carried on that characteristic during the rest of his life in a variety of ways and places.

I am sorry he has passed.

All the DeCuyperes from David's late Uncle Donald's side of the family wish the rest of the family and friends peace and healing.

I remember David as a kind and trusting person with a good sense of humour. As cousins of similar age, we spent a lot of time together as children during family gatherings and camping trips. He introduced me to the joys of blasting Led Zeppelin LPs in our basement rec room at about age 11. He came to visit our family in Ottawa in 2006. He will be missed.
