DOREEN DEMARÉ

March 10, 1940 - October 12, 2021

In sadness, the family of Doreen Demaré announces her passing at the Victoria General Hospital on October 12, 2021.

Doreen was predeceased by her husband Paul; son David; son-in-law Calvin; brother-in-law Remi; and by her parents, Leon and Victorine Cousin (née Vigier). She showed strong courage in these losses. Doreen is survived by her children, Douglas, Renée (Gord), and Ramona (step-daughter Catrina); daughters-in-law, Alison and Daniella; grandchildren, Justin, Robyn, Sarah, Deanna (Zac), Stijn, Dries, Kalyna, Davis, Sydney, Alex, Riley (Keith), Sean, and Emily. She is also survived by siblings, Lucille (Vic), Jerry (Linda), Rick (Debbie), Michèle (Hans), Laurie (Donna), and Danielle (Don); and sister-in-law Maria.

Doreen lived in Notre Dame until about 5 years of age, and then on her parent’s family farm near Swan Lake, Manitoba. The eldest of a family of seven children, Doreen became a problem solver to her siblings and whether a large problem or a frivolous challenge they always felt they could ‘call Doreen about it’; and this carried on throughout the years. Doreen graduated high school in Bruxelles, then Teachers’ College the following year. She taught at the rural schools of Archibald (LaRivière) and Cardinal, then at Windsor Park Collegiate in St Boniface School Division, Winnipeg.

Paul and Doreen were married in 1961. While a stay-at-home Mom, Doreen was also enrolled at University of Winnipeg and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967. Doreen and Paul owned a cottage on Deception Bay, Lake of the Woods and the lake took an important place in family life for both her immediate and extended family. Doreen was always happy to gather family, friends, her parents and siblings whether at home or at the lake.

While raising her children, Doreen was an active community leader at Norberry Community Club having sat on the Board of Directors and contributing community club news to The Lance for many years.  In addition, Doreen managed the Rental Real Estate business that she and Paul owned and never hesitated to personally do any work required for the business from laying carpet and repairing appliances to purchasing and selling properties.

During these years, Doreen was also highly engaged in politics and with the Provincial Progressive Conservative Party. In 1986, she was elected as Winnipeg City Councillor for Riel/St Vital Ward, where she was admired for her dedication to the betterment of St. Vital and Winnipeg.  Doreen’s colleagues at City Council noted her thorough research on City issues and her pragmatic, highly productive approach as a City Councillor. There is now a park in St Vital named for Doreen.  In the latter part of her career, Doreen worked in administrative leadership at the leg for her constituency MLA and at Pa D’or Manufacturing, the family business founded by her and Paul.

Doreen always modelled a strong work ethic in her personal and professional life.   In retirement, she carried her enthusiasm into supporting her children and 13 grandchildren, playing Bridge, participating in dance groups and other events. Doreen always enjoyed winter vacations in the Caribbean and travelled extensively with Paul throughout her life. Until Covid halted travel, Doreen attended many bridge tournaments in far destinations and earned enough bridge points to achieve Silver Life Master.

Doreen loved her family and was particularly proud of her grandchildren. Pictures of her children and grandchildren, siblings and parents adorned every room of her home. Doreen also treasured her friends from Bridge and dancing groups and was caring and helpful to everyone. With her siblings, children and grandchildren, she shared many vivid stories about their heritage which helped others understand the past. Her strength will be missed.

A sincere thank you is extended to family and bridge friends who assisted with care for Doreen, and to medical staff at the Victoria General Hospital, in particular Dr. Cavers, and to the medical staff at Cancer Care Manitoba, in particular Dr. Ralph Wong, Michelle and Dr. Ogaranko.

A private funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, October 27, Due to Covid restrictions the mass will be attended by immediate family only.

Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for the committal service (interment of Doreen's ashes) at 12:45 PM Wednesday, October 27 in St. Vital Cemetery, 236 River Road. Family will arrive shortly after the mass.

A reception and celebration of Doreen's life will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Church). RSVP is optional but appreciated by the family. Please click here to register your attendance.

It is with great sorrow that we have just learned of the loss of Doreen. We, some of the French cousins, are concerned with your great Canadian family. We rejoice in marriages and births and are saddened when, unfortunately, one passes away. We send our warmest thoughts to everyone. Not only to those with whom we have shared good times, but also to all those whom we have not yet met, especially to the children of Doreen and Paul and their grandchildren as well as her siblings. One memory that I have of Doreen was when I was pretty young. Uncle Leon, Aunt Vicki and family would come visiting from time to time on the farm. This time Doreen decided to tell Norman, Johnny and I a story. I kind of think that Jerry and Rick might have been there too. We were outside sitting on the step and Doreen was on the landing just below. It was getting rather late and a little dark. She decided to tell us boys a scary story. Just as she was getting close to the punch line our Shetland pony that was pastured close to the house decided to go for a run through the bush. It made quite a racket and it must have done so on cue because Doreen ran over us getting into the house first. I have never shied away from a scary story since. Our deepest condolences to all of Doreen's Family. Bert and Marilyn Debreuil

My cousin, Doreen, was like a big sister to me.  My first recollection of her as a very young child had me lock her inside a shed used as a summer kitchen on the farm.  But, nor for long!  She soon found an old boot to toss through the window, and was back at the house, disgruntled to say the least.  Over the years, at family gatherings she would often regale her audience with the story.  At my expense, of course! Other truly memorable times included spending a week (1961) practice teaching under her tutelage at her one-room school house in Cardinal.  After teaching an art lesson, I remember Doreen insisting that every single "work of art" had to be displayed on the wall.  The lesson for me that day was to value every child's work.  That same summer, I was at her wedding; talk about a beautiful bride! In 1979, my wife, Barbara, and I had occasion to visit the family compound in Lake of the Woods, and touring on the pontoon boat.  We told them of our latest acquisition, a race horse, and that it would be running that weekend.  True to form, Doreen, Paul and all four children, along with Lucille's family, returned early from the lake to celebrate our very first win with what turned out to be our star horse, Flying Frost.  This past July, I sent Doreen the picture with everyone in the Winner's Circle.  We were especially pleased to hear that she enjoyed sharing the picture with various family members. Barbara really got to know Doreen through Bridge, as both belonged to the same club.  Fierce competitors they were, both shared a fond admiration for one another. More recently, in 2013, it was our honour to witness her recognition in having a park named after her: Demare-Dodeck Park in St. Vital. Doreen, in our lives you've made a difference; you live on! Condolences to Doreen and Paul's very large family and also to her siblings and their families. I do not forget her many cousins and friends everywhere. We will all miss her caring, her energy and enthusiasm. I believe Doreen was the product of good parenting and a down-to-earth country lifestyle. She was my ‘look-up-to-cousin’.  I hope my picture of Doreen in the turnip patch (1943) comes through. It was taken about the time I was born. Although we were never able to spend much time together I remember vividly the occasions when we managed to cross paths.  I especially remember visiting a friend in St. Vital many years ago when Doreen showed up at the door campaigning for a City Councillor position. But, nothing in the obituary is really news to me.  However the reading of it even in such compressed form takes ones breath away when one realizes how full and active her life was. Doreen will be missed but never forgotten.

A Life well lived. It is through Square Dancing that Doreen and I became acquainted and through our pursuit of Round Dancing that we became friends. If one needed a female partner, Doreen stepped up; if a male dancer was needed , no problem, my friend would learn the steps for that designation! Nothing daunted her. She was a Renaissance woman; knowledgeable, creative, resourceful, eloquent and articulate. Dancing kept us active both physically and mentally. But , most of all ,we enjoyed ourselves and could laugh at our faux-pas! Une grande dame. Tu me manques mon amie.

Toutes mes sympathies Lucille, Jerry, Rick, Michele, Laurie et Danielle ainsi que vos familles.  I had a short visit and a dance with Doreen not long before COVID19 closed everything down.  Little did I realize that I would never see her again.  She certainly lived a full life and will be missed by many. I know Doreen to have been a truly wonderful mother, deeply loved by each of her children.  She was the epitome of grace (and the most gracious of hostesses which I have long remembered).  My thoughts now are with her family.  May they find consolation in knowing that hers was a most well-lived life.

Doreen will be sadly missed at the bridge table.  She sure enjoyed playing   bridge. She will be missed at the bridge table.  She was always friendly and chatty.  Sometimes she shared pictures of the family and liked to talk about the different activities of her grandchildren.  I am sending my condolences to the family.
