LESLIE WALTER DESPINS

August 28, 1951 - August 28, 2022

Peacefully, after a short battle with cancer, Les passed away on August 28th, his 71st birthday, with his wife and sons by his side.

He will always be remembered by his wife, Donna; sons, Doug (Jennifer), Blair (Shaleen), and Neal (Miranda). He loved his grandchildren Trent (Virginia), Kylie, Rylan (Libby), Audrey, Sarah, Colton and Austin and was eagerly awaiting the birth of his first great grandchild.

Les was born on August 28, 1951 in Winnipeg, and passed away at the Selkirk Regional Hospital on August 28, 2022. He married Donna on July 20, 1974 and they just celebrated 48 years of marriage.

He is survived by siblings Robbie Harris, Geordie and Wendy Despins, Arlene and Kaz Sawicz, Debbie and Dave Payment, Maureen and Wayne Mosionier, Pat and Stan Hadden and their families. He will also be missed by sister in laws Nancy and Tim Flook, Sandra and Jack Robertson and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Bernard and Phyllis, brother Fred and brother-in-law Bob Harris.

Les graduated from Red River Community College as an Electronic Technologist in 1973. He immediately began working for Bristol Aerospace and spent his entire career there until his retirement in October 2011.

Les and Donna spent many years camping in Gimli before he built, with the help of his sons, family and friends, their retirement dream home on the Sandy Hook Golf Course. It was an accomplishment that he was very proud of and enjoyed every minute of living there. In his younger years he curled and golfed, but it was golfing that he enjoyed the most and he spent countless hours on the course with his family and friends.

Golf was a big part of Les’ life and was highlighted by his two Hole-in-Ones. There were many trips to courses near and far with his sons and also long-time playing partner Rene Davidson.

Travelling was also a must. There were annual family vacations when the boys were growing up, from road trips to Montreal, Vancouver Island and Disneyland to flying to Disneyworld.

After retirement Les and Donna were away almost as much as they were home. Cruising was something they found they loved to do. Alaska, Hawaii, Panama Canal and different Caribbean cruises were thoroughly enjoyed. He loved the history when they visited Scotland and France, the beauty of the scenery on their road trip to the Maritimes and he took a million photos along the way.

When he wasn’t travelling, he loved watching his grandchildren in all their activities. He was a proud Papa and spent many hours at the kart track, the curling club, dance competitions and soccer fields. He also found time to play bridge at the seniors club in Gimli.

In his early childhood he became lifelong friends with Vance Lavery and Marc Vivian and to this day, he would have us laughing with the stories he told of their “musical talent” and escapades. In later years, Larry Zack became his golf and bridge partner and although they may not have been the best bridge players, they had a lot of fun!

The family would like to thank the staff at the Selkirk Regional Hospital for their care and compassion during his stay.

“Love you Forever”

“Miss you Always”

It is with a heavy heart, that I Marilyn Hill, Les's cousin (from Regina), post these thoughts in his memory. I moved from Winnipeg to Regina in 1981, and came back to visit my parents Bruce and Doris Kraeling regularly. As my parents aged and needed more assistance than I could provide from afar, Les and Donna stepped in to offer them help. They took my parents to doctors' appointments, got groceries for them and helped out with so many other things. But it was not just the doing I was grateful for, but also the kindness and compassion they showed my parents. When my mother required more assistance last summer, I came to Winnipeg to stay with her and Les and Donna continued to provide support and comfort to her and myself. I feel priviledged  to have known Les, and thankful for all the caring shown to my parents and myself.

Very Deeply saddened by the news of Les, my heart goes out to Donna and all his family.. I worked with Les at Bristol Aerospace ( Now Magellan Aerospace ). Les and I “were” the Calibration Dept. and he taught me all there is to know about that Dept. I am now Senior Calibration technologist and in deep gratitude for his mentorship. Les was a very kind, intelligent, and gentile man, I still remember all the times we had to push/pull the calibration cart with all our equipment up and down through two tunnels to get to the other end of the plant for a Survey on one of the several large furnaces due for Calibration. To this day I still think of him and miss his wise cracking jokes or stories he would tell multiple time a day.. On several occasions My wife Donna and I would share a meal ether at our home or theirs, good time were had by all..   With heavy hearts, I say a final goodbye my friend, you will be missed but not forgotten  … Mike Carlson, Senior Calibration Technologist, Magellan Aerospace, Winnipeg.

Les and I had known each other for more than forty years, but the first thirty were as members of the Winnipeg Twin club and we were acquaintances. For the last eleven years  we became close friends, played golf and bridge together, never argued; he was a kind and gentle man, and I will miss his laugh and companionship so much.

Thanks for sharing that photo bio. Les was such a gentleman. Whether running the grid, walking the pits or sharing photos of our “exploits”, he made life at the kart track enjoyable for everyone. He will definitely miss him.

My favorite memories of uncle Les are not one specific time, but they are all the family Christmas parties we attend at the house in Winnipeg. One in particular I remember is when I was 13 and living in Winnipeg I wasn't an adult or a teenager or even a younger kid I was caught in that awful in-between age. I walked into the house and there he was with a huge smile on his face, gave me a big hug and said how happy he was to have so many of his nieces and nephews there with them. Christmas is always hard for us all to be together with so many of us having different family functions but I will always remember how he always had a big smile and a huge hug to greet us as we came through the door.
