ELISABETH DEWITT

May 27, 1941 – April 4, 2026

On April 4, 2026, Elisabeth Hendrika Dewitt (née Van Dasselaar) completed her earthly journey and passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the age of 84.

She was the loving wife of Derk, her husband of nearly 65 years. She will be dearly missed by her children: Carolyn (Wayne) Versteeg, Rob (Annie) Dewitt, MaryAnn (Blake †) Termeer, Doug (Juliette) Dewitt, Cor (Danielle) Dewitt, and Derek (Judith) Dewitt. She was a cherished Oma to 34 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

Affectionately known as “Bep,” she was the fifth of thirteen children, born on May 27, 1941, in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. As a teenager, she immigrated to Canada with her family in 1954, settling in Homewood, Manitoba. Like many immigrants of her time, her first job was hoeing sugar beets, and she later worked housekeeping for various families.

Bep met Derk in Carman, and they were married on April 14, 1961. Shortly after, they moved to Winnipeg, where they built their life together and raised their family.

Over the years, Mom came to know and help many people. Her home was always welcoming—there was a full cookie tin, and she would gladly set aside whatever she was doing to share coffee and conversation with any visitor. Once her children were older, she worked for many years at Gateway Publishing. She also devoted countless hours volunteering at Park Manor, where she formed meaningful connections with residents.

She enjoyed bowling in a league and regularly went out for breakfast with friends. She loved camping at Otter Falls with her children, cousins, and friends, with Dad joining on weekends. In later years, Mom and Dad cherished their annual winter trips to Florida, where they spent time fishing and relaxing with friends.

In 2004, after retiring, Mom and Dad started Dewitt’s Bloomin Works Greenhouse, which they operated for nearly 20 years. They came to know many people, and visitors often stopped by not only to buy plants, but to visit and chat.

Mom loved fishing, was a sharp card player, and an avid Sudoku enthusiast. A few years ago, she suffered a stroke that limited her mobility, yet she continued to welcome guests with a cup of coffee and a kind word. With love and dedication, Dad cared for her at home—just as she wished—until the day before her passing.

In just two weeks, they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Her final days were very difficult, and she longed to be taken home to be with her Saviour. The Lord has now granted her that wish, and that is the comfort her family holds today.

Funeral Service will be held at Redeemer Canadian Reformed Church, 15 Bates Avenue in Winnipeg, MB on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow. Interment will occur earlier that day in a private family service.
