OLGA DICK

June 30, 1936 - November 25, 2019

With deep sadness, we announce that our mother Olga, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on November 25, 2019 at the age of 83 years.

She is survived by her children: David (Heather), Darryl (Karen) and Dale; grandchildren: Justin & Amber; sisters: Hilda and Cathy; brothers Randel & Terry and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom was the eldest daughter of a family of six children living in Winnipeg’s north end. She was proud of her Ukrainian ancestry and remained fluent in the language her whole life. She was also adept at cooking iconic Ukrainian dishes; her holopchi, potato pancakes and perogies were delicious beyond belief. Holidays like Ukrainian Christmas and Thanksgiving were that much more special because we knew we would soon be feasting on these tantalizing dishes.

Mom raised three boys on her own while attending night school, and was rightfully proud when she obtained her high school diploma, and from there went on to achieve a Bachelor of Teaching degree with Winnipeg Education Centre and Brandon University. She taught elementary school at William Whyte for a number of years, and then to Strathcona School where she finished her career.

Mom was a born teacher and loved her job, and her students loved her right back. After she retired, when she was shopping at Garden City Shopping Centre it was a common occurrence for former students to spot her and call, “Mrs. Dick, Mrs. Dick” and come running to give her a hug and almost always tell her that she had been their favourite teacher.

She was also a big animal lover and could never turn away a stray. At one point we had 7 cats and 2 dogs! Mom’s special cat though was Sasha, a stray tabby that needed a forever home. One look at her and Mom was hooked. She and Sasha were together for 18 years, and Mom never stopped missing her.

Mom had a big heart and was genuinely kind and caring, consistently putting others’ interests ahead of her own, sometimes to her own disadvantage and this has never changed. She would be the first to help when it was needed and we loved her for it. And she gave us, her sons, unconditional love. No matter what the circumstances, we knew Mom would be there for us. It was a beautiful gift that will be with us always. Though we miss her terribly, we know that she is at peace and happy to be reunited with Sasha and Baba. Goodbye Mom until we’re all together again. We love you forever.

She was my elementary teacher who would take me home to her house and spend lots of time with me. One of the best teachers I ever had. I will miss her.  ❤

Our condolences to the family. Mrs Dick was my daughter’s favourite teacher, one that made a lasting impact on her. Kimberlee was one of those students who would see her at Garden City mall or the grocery store and stop to talk. Before her retirement from Strathcona Kim visited her on a regular basis. Know that she was loved by her students long after they moved on from her classroom. Her memory will live on in our hearts.

I got to know Olga while working at Strathcona School.  She always arrived with her makeup carefully applied and her hair backcombed and fluffed up. However, one day, she came into the staff room looking like a drowned rat.  It was on a rainy windy day and she had decided to be kind and share her umbrella with a tall fellow who was often at her bus stop. He had held the umbrella over his head while the wind and rain had whipped at her.  She was a real sight! I had made a purple sack purse out of upholstery fabric, and she had to have it as purple was her favourite colour.  It was obviously durable as she used it for a very long time.  She had a great sense of humour and often had very funny stories to share. My condolences to all of her family.   Jocelyne Jaremowich

Olga and I taught together at Strathcona. I in kindergarten, she in grade one. We shared students, resources and many laughs. I have many memories of Olga, one , my favourite, being the McGregor bus ride home. Especially after having my first child,  and teaching kindergarten all day. I’d say,”I don’t want to go home” “I’m so tired” Olga would convince me it was the best thing to do!! We would laugh and laugh. Years later, I ran into Olga, and we would again laugh together, reminiscing about that bus ride. How  hard it was to teach all day, and then have to face our own families. She always spoke fondly of her sons, and grandchildren. Dedicated in every way. I remember her favourite colour, purple, and how everything she owned had to be that colour. I remember her nick name, Magda. I remember the carpooling with Joan, and the laughs we shared. Olga truly had a wonderful sense of humour. Always laughing! I’m saddened to hear of her passing. My condolences to her family. ❤ Joy

Dear Dave:  I'm so sorry to hear the sad news of your mothers passing.  I only met your mother a few times but I could see the caring that your mother and you boys had for each other.  My deepest sympathy to you and the rest of your family.

My deepest condolences to Olga's family. I was saddened to read she had passed. What a beautiful tribute! I met Olga when I was a T.A. at Strathcona, School, loved working in her classroom. A beautiful person. And what a great sense of humor. One memory: watching her teach her students to do the Macarena! The pure joy on her face, and on her students' faces. Corinna

I am wondering if Olga was once married to a man named Ken Dick. He was a brother to my dad Glen Dick and she would have been a sister in law to Doris, Hilda, Linda,,,,). I met Olga in Winnipeg with my Uncle Ken.. we had lunch at D'8Schtove. If so I offer my heart felt condolences and appreciate knowing her. With love, Melanie (Dick) Kauppila

I taught with Olga at Strathcona School for many years. I remember how much the children loved her and how much she loved them. One favorite memory of mine is when computers were being introduced at school and I was helping Olga, she said to me, "Freddy you don't yell at me like the other computer guy does." Olga always had a smile on her face and made me laugh.
