DANIEL JOHN DOERKSEN

November 11, 1959 – November 21, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel John Doerksen.

Dan, of Winnipeg Manitoba passed away peacefully on November 21st 2024 at the Heath Science Center. Daniel was predeceased by his parents Abraham and Kathleen Doerksen, his sister Judy Doerksen, and his brother David Doerksen. He is survived by his sister Pat Spencer (Earl), his brother Milton Doerksen, his sister-in-law Tina Doerksen along with numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Daniel was born and raised in Winnipeg attending Templeton Elementary, West St.Paul Junior High and West Kildonan Collegiate. He grew up on McPhillips about a mile inside the perimeter hwy with two older sisters, two younger brothers and anywhere from two to four foster siblings at any given time.

Dan spent a lot of his childhood outside. Biking, climbing trees, playing football, hockey and hide and seek were some of his favourite activities. He also enjoyed riding the minibike that he shared with his siblings and used to deliver the Free Press. Winter was spent snowmobiling, tobogganing, skating and later cross-country skiing.

Dan worked for a few years in the Health Science Centre Print Shop with his dad. Later he worked loading and unloading trucks for various companies.

Dan continued to live with his mom and sister Judy after his dad’s passing in 1995. During those years Dan was the family chauffer.

In 1998 Dan was accepted into the Sara Riel organization. Living in one of their residences Dan met Peter John Vanderweil and they became close friend. When that residence closed, Dan and Pete were offered and accepted an apartment through the organization. Sara Riel provided a very positive and supportive environment and Dan made a number of good friends there. Dan and Pete were roommates and best friends for many years.

In Dan’s fifties his health began to decline as he developed a medication induced form of Parkinsons disease. As a result, in 2022 he moved into Fred Douglas Lodge.

Dan participated wholeheartedly in the recreational activities there as was always grateful for anything that was done for him. Some individuals that held a special place in his heart were: Health Care Aides Kefir and his wife Madison, Recreation Workers Suzette, Samantha, Crystal and Katherine, Spiritual Care Director Julia, Nurses Gloria and Heather, Marnie and her husband Robert, Ernie who provided Music Therapy, and his good friends Teddy and Mike.

Dan was an avid sports fan, watching and attending every Moose and Jets game he could. Hockey and football were his favourites, but he enjoyed watching almost every sport.

Dan was a loving brother and had a close relationship with his sister Pat and brother in law Earl. He was kind, gentle and thoughtful. He loved children and enjoyed being an uncle. His visits in the care home from Kelsie, Keith and their children were a highlight in his life. He will be greatly missed. Dan will also be fondly remembered by his niece Sheryll, nephew Brandon, and extended family and friends.

A Celebration of Life service for Daniel will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Springs Church, 725 Lagimodiere Blvd, Winnipeg.

Daniel’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Daniel was a ray of sunshine. He was always so enthusiastic to participate in everything offered at FDL. He really loved a good joke, and I always had one for him. I will miss him and his laugh. He was loved by so many residents and staff. RIP My friend 🧡

I knew Dan during his time at FDL. I will miss him during wheel of fortune and other trivia games, there was never a puzzle I could stump him on. My condolences to the family and loved ones of Dan.

My condolences to Daniel's family and loved ones. I went to West St. Paul School with Daniel. He had a great sense of humor and was a lot of fun. I will always remember how kind and gentle he was. I'm very sorry to hear of Daniel's passing. 😔
