NEIL DONLEY

September 9, 1950 - January 25, 2020

Neil passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2020 in the Riverview Health Centre after a valiant three-year battle with neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer. He was 69.

A quiet man with a strong sense of independence and determination, he was often referred to as “a nice guy”. He enjoyed fishing with friends in his well-cared for old boat, building and flying radio controlled model aircraft, rollerblading, hot air ballooning, and an occasional flight in a glider. His rich baritone voice lent itself to various quartets and choral groups and he especially loved playing his gleaming tuba with a number of bands over the years. After a career of 43 years at Service Canada, Neil retired in 2015. He and Georgie then enjoyed some lovely trips to BC to visit family. Throughout his cancer ordeal, Neil’s inner strength and courage were an inspiration to us all. Rest in peace, dear Neil. You will be missed.

Neil is survived by Georgie, his wife of 38 years, sons Sean, John, daughter Lisa, brother Evan (Barb) and sister Fran Okihiro, along with their families. He will be greatly missed by his adoring Pomeranian, Phoebe. Neil was predeceased by his parents, Allen and Jean, and sister Ada Lownds.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.

I just heard today of Neil's passing and am saddened that we have lost a wonderful neighbour.  We have shared a  backyard fence for many years and had many conversations with Georgie and Neil about gardening, dogs, fishing, our Irish heritage. He was a friendly neighbor, eagerly assisted on our fence construction and repairs, took great pride in his yard and was a source of knowledge on how to plant and grow a garden, be it floral or vegetable. Our thought and  condolences to his family He will be missed.  David & Jane

Neil hired me in 2002, and it was my great fortune to start with the public service under his careful guidance and supervision.  He was patient and kind, and a great teacher.  Forever thankful and grateful to have known him.  Deepest sympathies to his family.

Deepest condolences to Georgie and his family. His absence in your life Georgie will be profound. Neil was a wonderful neighbor and friend. When my family faced tragedy, he was one of my wonderful neighbors who came to my rescue time and time again. Memories of Neil...always busy in his yard, polishing his car, working on his boat, finding some project to work on or else you could find him on his roller blades...always energetic. It was evident how much the cancer took away from you, but you still remained optimistic throughout. Fondly remembered. Rest In Peace Neil.
