James Douglas
JAMES HARVEY DOUGLAS
September 30, 1964 – November 22, 2024
On November 22, 2024, our gentle giant, James, entered into eternal rest. James was born in Minnedosa, Manitoba, on September 30, 1964, to Joyce and Harvey Douglas and was the youngest of three boys. James was predeceased by his mother, Joyce, in 2019; his brother, Scott, in 2013; his grandparents, Oliver and Eva Douglas, Fred and Eva Sherris; and his father-in-law, Robert Alvin Walker, in 2004.
James spent his early years between the Minnedosa-area farm, Brandon, Winnipeg, and The Pas, before eventually settling back on the “Prairie Pride Farm” south of Minnedosa, where he lived until making his final move to Winnipeg.
James spent his teenage years involved in 4-H and the United Church youth ministry. He often spoke fondly of the friends he made through retreats and trips to places like Nova Scotia, Montreal, and Nassau, Bahamas.
His dedication to his faith continued into adulthood. Like his father, James was a pillar in the Riding Mountain Conference of Churchmen, which took place every spring at Camp Wannacumbac in Clear Lake. James attended yearly, often bringing someone he had convinced to join, and continued attending until the camp closed.
James’ formal education included a Bachelor of Arts with studies in Theatre and Religious Studies, followed by a Civil Engineering diploma. James considered himself a lifelong learner and was always eager to learn something new. He had a keen interest in technology and computers and worked for many years in tech support with AT&T, Convergys, and Investors Group. James’ career concluded at Manitoba Hydro, where he worked for 15 years as an engineering technologist, specializing in fibre optics.
James married Amber in 2003 and became the proud father of Jasmine. Sherris was born in 2005, and James couldn’t have been happier. He loved people of all ages but was happiest when making a child smile.
James could always be counted on to help. He spent many years volunteering in various capacities at swim meets, school events, work, and in more formal roles, such as a Folklorama Tour Guide. In recent years, he was part of the Prairie Gunslingers, who routinely "robbed" the Prairie Dog Central riders of thousands of dollars for various charities. James loved his role and often tried to recruit others to join in his fun.
James will be missed by his father, Harvey; his wife, Amber; his daughters, Jasmine and Sherris; his brother, Ian (Barbara); nieces Sherry (Chris) and Jocelyn; great-niece Isabella; and sister-in-law, Debbie.
The family wishes to thank everyone who visited, called, and sent messages over the past couple of weeks. These gestures meant the world to James. They would also like to thank the medical teams and Rev. Macauley who attended at HSC for their compassion and excellent care.
Donations in James' memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, an organization that provided James with great comfort and support as he navigated the challenges of early onset Alzheimer's disease.
A memorial service for James will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, November 28, 2024 at Prairie Spirit United Church, located at 207 Thompson Drive, Winnipeg.
James’ family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I have very fond memories of a back packing trip through Camp Wannacumbac in about 1979 with James and about 8 other campers. It was a 32 mile round trip over 5 days and Jamie (James) was often the comic relief we needed when we got tired or overheated. Good Memories. My condolences to the family.

I am so sorry to learn that James has passed. I had the great pleasure of meeting and working with James (office nickname "Grumpy" for the Disney character and the hoodie he often wore -- not the man!) through MHI. He was always pleasant, thoughtful and funny. Plus that smile! Indeed, a wonderful human in a world lacking of his kind. We had many good laughs along the way, and we often lovingly spoke of our families. He was very proud of his family. I hope that the happy and loving memories of James will help carry you through this difficult time. Sincere condolences, Dan Massaroni

There are so many words & thought that come to mind. We met in our training class supporting when the Internet was in its infancy stages. We took calls supporting so many dynamic scenarios blindly. It was stressful at times but we all worked together and learned a lot from one another using the mute button & standing up looking over our cubicle(s).
I still remember the talented drawings he made while taking calls. We had a rockstar class & James was one of the individuals who stood out for his humanity.
If GUNDERWOO was acting up James was there to keep him grounded (those who were there will understand). 🤣
I'm so glad that we were able to meet up or just chat on the phone and laugh at the simplest of things.
James was a kind, genuine & sincere human being. You definitely walked the talk James.
God Bless 🙏

I met James just over a year ago while walking our dogs. What a fantastic person he was. We walked probably 4-5 times a week during that time together. now every time I enter the dog park I will always give him a thumbs up. I will not forget him. What a pleasure and privilege our journeys together were. Thank you my friend. RIP

When we just moved in behind James, on first day I was putting up a metal shed in the back yard and he saw me struggling to lift the roof on to it, he immediatly came over and without saying a word he helped me place it on with ease. Then introduced himself extending his hand with his big smile followed by a cute joke about the sitruation! I knew immediatly he was going to be a great neighbour!!
We always loved the waves hello, visits with the dogs, chats by the firepit, great stories and jokes and love for his family that he shared.
Always positive and with a smile :)
Miss you James my friend..

I met James 14 Years ago when I bought my house across the street from James and Amber, Jasmine and Sherris. My son was born 12 years ago. James and I built an incredible friendship over the last 14 years. Gentle giant is the best name for him. I lost my dad when I was 11 years old and even though James was not much older than me, he was a father figure to me. He gives the best warm hugs and his eyes smile when he smiles. I will miss James immensely. What a selfless man all the wayup to his passing And beyond. Safe journey, my friend. See you on the other side ❤️

James and I were students at U of W's Theatre program together in the mid 80s, working and collaborating on multiple shows. The summer of 1987 was especially memorable as we were co-instructors (and housmates) up in Cranberry Portage, piloting a drama program for Northern youth. He was just a hoot to work and live with, and he worked as hard as he played. He was funny and kind and was a true friend to any and all who knew him. Evidently, his character kept blooming ever after that time, as so many here have expressed. Our get-togethers were infrequent over these past few years but always warm and memorable, with lots of laughs. Gentlemen such as James are increasingly rare these days and Lord knows we need more James' in this sorry world. God rest you, my friend.

He was always the funny guy at 4H and other minnedosa activities. His mom was our leader for photography. He always kept us laughing.
In recent years before Joyce passes I shared and talked to her alot. We connected because we both had had no siblings and raised 3 kids. I had not seen him for years but his posts about his train robbing looked so fun....and he was still James always having fun....and looked so happy with his daughter. I can not believe he is gone so young.

I was in a number of classes with James at Red River College in the Civil Engineering Technology Program. I recall valuing his positive personality, the sharing of his life experience as a mature student, and enjoying his many stories that passed the time while working on seemingly endless assignments (particularly during our drafting classes).
I am saddened to hear of his passing, and wish to extend condolances to his family and close friends.

I only worked with James for a few years but we went for coffee breaks regularly and I got to know him pretty well. He must have set up our Friday Coffee meetings in our corporate calendar in perpetuity because his name is still attached our to weekly reminder.. He was a good soul and I felt terrible when he shared the news of his early onset Alzheimers diagnosis this past fall. I was impressed that his spirits were still up. Speaks volumes to the man he was. My heartfelt condolences to his family. He always spoke of his family with pride. Rest in peace my friend.

I've been trying to think how to share my feelings/memory. As a young child I was introduced to James at Church as a young, burly man, he was often called upon to help get my father who was in a wheelchair into the United Church in Minnedosa, which at the time was not wheelchair accessible. James' kindness made him one of my favourite people to see at Church and he often sat near us when he was around.
Another time we were at Lower Fort Gary,I believe, and James was there working playing one of the parts there and I just remember the pure joy of reconnecting with my friend.
The world has lost an amazing, kind hearted, generous man, but Heaven has gained a faithful Angel. Rest in peace James.

I have known James my entire life... his mom Joyce and my mom Ramona went to St. Michael's Academy in Brandon. Our parents did everything together. James was more like a brother to me than a friend...I will forever miss and love him

I met James in 1996 as we worked together at AT&T. and Investors Group. It wasn't long before a life long friendship developed. Thanks to James I attended the Riding Mountain Conference of Churchmen with him numerous times. One year while there, we took a break and did the 17KM hike to Grey Owl Cabin. James pointed out that I need not worry about having to outrun a bear, that I'd be fine as long as I could outrun him. Amber, Harvey, Ian, Sherris, Jasmine, please accept our heartfelt condolences. Thank-You for sharing James with us "outsiders". James, rest in peace my friend . Robert and Carol Lapointe

From teh first time I met James at U of W in 1984 I knew we would be life-long friends. That got even deeper when James joined our tour guide family in the late 1990s. I can not express in words how wonderful a human being James was and how much my family and the Foklorama family will miss you. Rest well my friend; the world is a better place for having had you in it.
