MARGARET (MAGGIE) DUBESKI

July 27, 1952 - April 24, 2022

Maggie Dubeski passed away suddenly, surrounded by her family, on April 24, 2022. She was diagnosed with cancer last year. She was a beloved daughter, sister and aunt to her family as well as a cherished friend and foster parent to many.

Maggie was born in Winnipeg on July 27, 1952 and is survived by her loving family; siblings, Debbie (Wilf) Bedard, Nick Dubeski (Nancy Seeley), Chris (Julianna) Dubeski, and John Dubeski (Sheri Skalesky); nieces and nephews, Jamie (Sean) Carnegie, Lisa (Scott) Wise, Olivia, John (Kylie Rudd), and Emma Dubeski; and great nieces and nephew, Meghan Carnegie, Abby, and Lucas Wise. She was predeceased by her parents Ina Dubeski (Ruth) and John Dubeski.

In the early years of her career, Maggie worked in various administrative and accounting roles. She then transitioned to foster parenting which she dedicated herself to for more than 25 years. Caring for foster children was her calling and she provided a welcoming, loving home for many who needed a safe harbour. She was a fierce advocate for them at school and within the health system, always ensuring that Indigenous ways of knowing and being were at the centre of their healing journey. She maintained a special connection with many long after they became adults, especially Becky, Michelle, and Elizabeth.

Maggie loved to travel and any trip with her was an adventure. Regardless if it was visiting New York or a road trip to Minnesota, there was never a dull moment. Each trip was full of laughter and good food. She especially looked forward to visiting with family in Nipigon. She loved to cook and decorate for the holidays. She would invite you to join her to decorate her Christmas tree, but would ensure you placed the ornaments in the correct spot.

Maggie leaves a big gap in the lives of her friends and family. She will be deeply missed.

A sacred fire was lit on April 27 to help guide Maggie on her journey to the spirit world. Our family thanks Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre for hosting this ceremony that also provided a special healing experience for those who attended. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be planned at a later date. In the meantime, Maggie’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Maggie loved animals, especially the dogs and cats she kept as pets. Should you wish, donations can be made to Before the Bridge - Senior K-9 Rescue at www.beforethebridge.ca.

❤awe reading this makes me feel really shitty for choseing the path I choose if I stayed and lived with Maggie when I was living with her I'm sure my life would be so different right now I have to admit i do miss you Maggie and I'm sorry for all the headaches I caused you when I was living with you. I wish you could have met my little guy I had a baby on March 6 his name is Timothy-henry. I guess this is goodbye for now ...🥀🥀🥀

Maggie, who i considered my mom, has raised me to be a strong independent woman. She pushed me to graduate, get a job, get my drivers license and so much more. It was really challenging but there doesn’t pass a day where i regret it. Every moment spent with her was always filled with sarcasm laughters and joy. We had our ups and downs but in the end she always knew how to make me feel better and explain to me in a manner where i would realize that she was right.  My life growing up before moving in with her at 8 years old, i never knew myself till she proved it to me. Showed me the real world and expectations. Her passing is a hard loss for me, but she will always be in my heart and her life skills and parenting taught me a lot for my future. Love you Maggie💖 always.  - Michelle B

My deepest condolences to Maggie’s family and friends. We have lost a kind and caring person who always considered others before herself. I will miss her laughs, lengthy phone conversations and dinners together. Such fond memories.

I was saddened to read of Maggie’s passing. She and I were co-workers at Simkin, Gallagher back in the 70’s and shared many a well-deserved Friday after-work drink at the Stage Door in The Winnipeg Inn (now The Weston). Fond memories.

We made many trips from London to Leduc and always stopped on the way for a visit, of course Les would never warn her we were coming, but she always made time even if she had other plans. On one of her visits to Edmonton, we got to spent the day with her, so many laughs. We will always remember and miss her.

Maggie will be missed by so many. I will miss our dinners out and the hours of conversation that went with it.  She will forever be in our hearts and thoughts.

Always will I remember Margaret’s laugh and the many times we shared some good ones.  The many times we shared birthdays, Christmas and anniversaries will always be special to me.  She has left an empty space for all of those who knew her♥️.
