MARIA DA SILVA DUTRA

September 9, 1959 - November 4, 2024

It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our best friend, mother, sister, aunt, great-aunt, and grandmother at the age of 65 years.

Maria was born in Sao Jorge, Acores, Portugal on September 9, 1959, daughter of the late Manuel Dutra, and survived by her mother Luiza da Silva Dutra.

Maria is survived by her loving son Michael Borges; daughter Diana Patricia Borges; grandson Tristan Borges; sister Maria Manuela Dutra; nieces Arissa Reis and Miranda Reis; sister Filomena Grace Dutra Schultz; nephew Tristan Melo (Taylor Melo); great-nephew Leo Melo; niece Chalsea Beaudin (Eric Beaudin); and nephew Evan Melo (Olivia Gaudynek). She is also survived by our father’s sisters and cousins; and our first cousin Tony Dutra. She was very close to our tia Fatima Elias here in Winnipeg; and our cousin Tony Dutra in California; and our cousins in Sao Jorge, Acores, Portugal. She is also survived by friends, Jodi, Julie, and more.

Maria loved her family and she was very happy around her family. We all have incredible memories together over the years with birthdays, special memories, and holidays all together.

She loved animals especially her white dove (Suzy).

Maria immigrated to Winnipeg in 1970 with her parents and sisters.

Maria worked hard as a parent to provide and care for her children. Maria put herself through school while raising her children, to finish the education that she couldn’t get as a young woman.

Always a strong woman, Maria, never held back when it came to letting people know how she felt and expressed herself with emotions and caring gestures towards the people she loved and cared for. Although she was a quiet and sheltered woman, she very much enjoyed and willingly made herself available to help her family at any time needed which is what really made her feel happy and loved by others the most.

Maria lived a great life enjoying the time she got to spend with her son, grandson family and friends.

Things Maria enjoyed doing during her days would be watching cooking videos on YouTube, watching her soap operas, listening to her favourite music, and clothes shopping. Maria loved to cook and bake, she was a great cook and baker. Maria also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

As a mother, sister, aunt, great-aunt, grandmother, and friend she will never be forgotten and always remembered by everyday things by those close to her.

In accordance with Maria’s wishes cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, donations in Maria’s memory may be made to the Liver and Diabetes foundations of Manitoba.

Maria’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

My deepest condolences for the loss of a beautiful sister, mother and friend.

She has ascended to a pain free place but still lives with us still in heart, memory and spirit.

Thinking of you all in this time of grieving.

At the passing of a loved one, we sometimes moan, we cry, we recall good and bad times, we ask questions to which there seem to be no answer but we'll understand it all, by and by, so keep heart for the lord knows all things best.

I'm so very sorry to hear of Maria's passing. I had only met her once but felt like I knew her well and knew of her health struggles through her sister Maria. God bless her family who I know will miss her deeply, each and every one of you are in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace Maria.
