EMILY MAY DYCK

(née GUENTHER)

May 23, 1937 – November 1, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Emily May Dyck, who departed peacefully on November 1, 2024, surrounded by her beloved children and grandchildren. She left their embrace amidst songs, prayers, tears, and laughter, entering the presence of the Lord.

Emily was predeceased her devoted husband of 56 years, Peter, her infant daughter, Mona Dawn; her brothers Morley, Raymond, and Larry; She is lovingly remembered by her brother, Roy (Judy); her sister, Carol Jackson (Doug); her son, Keith (Leanne); her daughters, Shawna Perron (Dennis) and Rona Dyck-Nadeau (Louis); her grandchildren, Felicia (Jamie), Kalandra (Tyler), Gloria (Billy), Maddi, Maggie, Shelby, and Alaura; and her  great-grandchildren, Juliet, Peter, Adalaine, Jacob, JJ, Laurence, David and Josie.

Emily was born on May 23, 1937, in Winkler, Manitoba, at her grandmother’s “old folks' home.” She lived a full and vibrant life centered on family, faith, music, and service to others. Her early years were spent on a farm just outside Winkler before the family moved to town in 1943, settling on 8th Street. Emily was an active and spirited teenager, filling her days with skating, studying piano, and singing in church choirs. After completing school, she attended the National School of Dressmaking and Design, where her lifelong passion for sewing and design took root. She taught sewing and played both the snare drum and trumpet in the town band.

Emily was baptized at the Winkler Bergthaler Church in 1955, and was married to Peter on May 27, 1956.  Together, they built a music filled life of love, faith, and community. Their three children were the joy and pride of their lives. In 1965, the family moved to Winnipeg, where Emily continued her deep involvement in church music, and  singing in church choirs almost continuously until 2006. For 15 years, she also taught organ lessons from her home, sharing her musical gifts with others.

Emily’s life was filled with hobbies reflecting her creative spirit and her devotion to family. She excelled in dressmaking, especially wedding and party apparel, and took great joy in playing the organ, flower gardening, and sewing-related crafts. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and homemaker, creating a warm and welcoming home for family and friends.

After Peter’s retirement in 1991, they moved to their lakefront cottage in Sandy Hook. They enjoyed traveling together to destinations such as Texas, Florida, British Columbia, and Cuba. In 2001, they settled in Gimli and joined the Lakeshore Singers. As "The Two Happy Wanderers," Emily on piano and Peter accompanying on guitar and banjo, they traveled throughout Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba, bringing joy and music to senior residences and personal care homes.

Emily’s kindness, creativity, and dedication to others leave a lasting legacy in her family and in the lives of all who were blessed to know her. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished.

A Celebration of Her Life will be held at 11:00am on Friday, November 8, 2024, at the First Mennonite Church (922 Notre Dame Avenue in Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0M9).

Flo Wiens is my Mom and was a great friend of Emily. She was reminiscing about how much Emily helped out when my sister Debra was born. She was very appreciative. I recently digitized my Dad's old 8 mm movies and one was of Pete and Em's wedding.

The first time I remember meeting Aunt Emily was when she offered to make my wedding dress. We drove out to Sandy Hook and then we "negotiated". She was about "extra" and I was about elegance. We compromised and she added a "little extra". It was so unique and with extra attention to detail very much like Aunt Emily herself ♥️

I know that the ladies group both my mom and Emily belonged to at 1st Mennonite church met this week and honored her memory. It wasn't hard to connect with her and just feel loved and have fun! She will be so missed.

Wish we could be there as you celebrate a classy unique woman and remember so many stories and experiences together.

God bless you as you connect and see her impact in your lives. 🤗

So sad to hear of Emily's passing. I spent many enjoyable hours in the FMC choir with Emily and Peter. Whenever our paths crossed, it was always with a smile and big hug from her. I will miss that. Take comfort in the knowledge that "The Two Happy Wanderers" have got a new gig.
