ALLEN ELLIOT

October 6, 1939 - June 15, 2023

With sadness we announce the passing of Allen Elliot on June 15, 2023 at the age of 83.

Allen will be lovingly remembered by Marilyn, his wife of 61 years, son Kerry (Debbie), daughters Barbara and Dawna (Brian), and granddaughter Kaitlyn (Kurtis), brother-in-law Wayne (Joanne), sister-in laws Norah and Verna, nieces and nephews, along with his many friends in Winnipeg and their vacation community in Kihei, Maui.

Allen was predeceased by his parents, Ken and Betty Elliot, his in-laws, Stan and Eva Arason and brother-in-law Alex Sivucha.

Allen was born October 6, 1939 in Morris, MB. The Elliot’s moved to various rural towns with Ken’s job at Pool Elevator. They settled in Cypress River where Allen finished schooling. He was a good student and enjoyed playing many sports. Allen and Marilyn grew up across the street from each other.

After a brief stint with Investor’s Group Allen joined Manitoba Hydro and completed his training as a lineman. The family moved to BC in 1962 where Allen joined BC Hydro and was posted to Nanaimo. He developed many friendships with his co-workers and local community. Notably Jerry and Ruth Carter and the Neave family were life long friends.

Allen began working on hydro construction projects in the 70s. He was well respected and sought after to “ride the wire” on big projects like Mica Dam. The ‘project family’ would reassemble every spring bringing the work gang back together. There were many good times and shenanigans each year. The family would join Allen at the job site each summer and have fond memories of Harrison Hot Springs, Cultus Lake and Deep Bay.

Allen and Marilyn had the travel bug and took the family on many winter vacations down the west coast of USA and Mexico. The Neave’s introduced Allen and Marilyn to Hawaii which became their destination spot. After spending two years on the big island, they discovered Kihei, Maui and returned annually for over 25 years. They would spend two months every winter and met many cherished friends from Canada and USA. Notably Dennis and Gloria Schanzenbach, and the Hamilton’s.

The family relocated to Winnipeg in 1985 to be closer to Allen’s parents, spending time in Cypress River and Winnipeg reconnecting with many friends. Allen’s life long friend, Gary Gillis, brought him into the Birchwood family where Allen masterfully handled all the building maintenance work. Allen was a ‘jack of all trades’ and never met a project he couldn’t beat. Allen was proud to work for the Chipman family and always went the extra mile.

When he retired, Allen couldn’t put down the tools and started a home renovation company. He had many long-time customers and took care of everyone's needs be it electrical, plumbing, heating, or remodelling. He loved helping people and couldn’t say no.

Allen finally hung up the tools and enjoyed a real retirement, puttering in the garden, McDonald’s coffee group, and finding projects around the house. Neighbour’s Jim and Susan were always willing helpers. Allen and Marilyn enjoyed dining out with Gary and Jeannette Gillis catching up on all the latest news. His last project was rebuilding a projector to watch his dad’s 8 mm home movies.

The family would like to thank the Deer Lodge 2 West staff for all their care and comfort during Dad’s stay. You made a stressful time easier and we thank you.

Dad said “it is what it is” right to the end. He lived with dignity and is finally at peace. We love you Poppa and you will be missed. Your memory will live on in each of us.

Internment is at the Brookside Cemetery memory rock garden. There will be no service. Donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Deer Lodge Foundation.

Condolences to Marilyn, Dawna, and family. I will always have fond memories of Al, a kind hearted man whom I could always depend on whenever a problem arose or I needed a reno in my home. Always professional and knowledgeable in all of the trades…. And I will always be grateful for Al and Marilyn’s hospitality while Dawna and I vacationed in Hawaii with them. So many happy memories, thank you 🙏

The McDonald's Coffee Group has many fond memories of visits with Al. We kept up-to-date with happenings with his treasured granddaughter. Then we learned of the arrival of a companion in the form of a dog. We will miss "Cadillac Joe". Our thoughts are with Marilyn and family.
