Mavis Emberley

In Loving Memory of
MAVIS EMBERLEY
1929 – 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mavis Emberley, aged 96, on January 28, 2026, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mavis was predeceased by her parents; brother William Nattrass and sister Freda Moran; husband Donald; and her youngest son, Michael. She leaves behind a legacy of love, warmth, and kindness that will be remembered by all who knew her.
Mavis is survived by her son Bruce Emberley (Diana); her daughters, Cathy Carsted (Frederick) and Linda Filiatrault. She was a proud grandmother to Ross Courtney-Emberley (Jessica), David Emberley (Kirsten), and Jeanine Filiatrault (Jordan Sanderson) providing much love, care and non-judgmental support through childhood and beyond. She was so excited to meet her great-grandchildren, Ivarr (3) and Everleigh (1) Courtney-Emberley recently and they will unfortunately not experience the love and support she gave all others in her life.
Born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, she and her husband Don moved to his hometown, Winnipeg, Manitoba in the early 1950s. They settled in Charleswood soon after and she created a warm and loving home at Roblin and Malone and later Abercorn Grove. These homes became welcoming gathering places for neighbourhood kids, cousins, and friends.
While her children were involved, she volunteered on the Beaumont School Parent Council and for Girl Guides of Canada. In later years she enjoyed attending exercise classes and Charleswood Historical Society events.
After all her children were in school full time, Mavis began a new career as a Home Child Care Provider for Child and Family Services in Winnipeg, providing daily, in-home care for children and families needing support for premature babies, newborns, multiple births, and children of all ages. She brought her supportive, personal family experience raising her four children to the homes of many families making a great difference in their lives.
She was a frequent sitter for her three grandchildren, and they all have fond memories of heading over to her Shelmerdine Drive home and their visits to parks, shopping malls, and the local c-store for treats. She was a great support to her extended family and was a key partner in raising them.
Mavis will be remembered for her generosity of spirit and her ability to make everyone feel at home. Her kindness touched not only her family but also the wider community. The sense of belonging she fostered continues on in those who were fortunate enough to know her.
The Emberley family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all the dedicated staff at Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, Harmony Court at Riverwood Square, and Riverview Health Centre for the compassion and care shown to Mavis during her illness. Your kindness will always be remembered.
The family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverview Health Care Foundation or a charity of your choice in Mavis’ memory. Your support will help provide care and comfort to others facing similar challenges.
Mavis’ life was a testament to the power of love, family, and community. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who were blessed to be a part of her journey.

I remember when she used to babysit me, Linda and I would have "tea" - hot water with sugar in the toy tea set. On special times we got milk In our tea. She was the best aunty anyone could ask for. I will always treasure the many Christmas dinners and sleepovers I had. Our condolences to my cousins
