MICHAEL FREDERICK EMBERLEY

June 10, 1960 - November 8, 2022

Michael's family is greatly saddened by his unexpected passing at home.

He is survived by his mother Mavis, brother Bruce (Diana), sisters Cathy Carsted (Frederick), and Linda Filiatrault, nephews Ross Courtney-Emberley (Jessica), and David (Kirsten Jordan), and niece Jeanine Filiatrault. He was predeceased by his father Donald.

Michael considered the Courts to be his family as well, and always referred to Jamie and Jessica as his goddaughters.

Michael grew up in Charleswood before much of the residential development occurred.  The family home at Roblin Blvd. and Malone St., a short dead-end lane with 5 homes, and the surrounding natural area, was a great playground.  From building forts and getting up to the latest mischief down in the Malone Bush to riding bikes far and wide, lots of fun and memories were made.  Michael had reconnected with some of the old Charleswood crew in recent years and enjoyed catching up on the years gone by.

Michael went to Beaumont School, which really was over a mile long walk in all kinds of weather, and then on to Oak Park High School in the new Westdale community. He demonstrated his knowledge of military history early on, often having a great knowledge of the details, no doubt much to the chagrin of some of his history teachers.

His working life included Temro Automotive, Bristol Aerospace, and Air Canada/Aveos as a structures technician for commercial aircraft repairs, a job he loved.

Michael loved military history, and was very proud of his father Donald's service in the Royal Canadian Navy during WW II. He spent many a happy hour (week, month) building detailed plastic models of tanks, army trucks, and such.  Michael enjoyed his time with his niece and nephews, and they have fond memories of the family BBQs and events over the years where he often got down and played, or, as they grew up, got into great discussions on the latest social issues.

Michael was also a dedicated volunteer on the Signage Crew at the Winnipeg Folk Festival for more than twenty years, and this was one of his favourite times each year.  Michael retired in 2015 and enjoyed driving his blue PT Cruiser and riding his bike around his neighborhood and beyond at any time of the day or night.

Michael had a dry wit and great sense of humour, and his frequent calls to his mother were an important part of her day.

A person of many and varied interests, he was much loved, and will be missed.

No formal service is planned. If you wish, please make a contribution to a charity of your choice in his memory.

My deepest condolences to Mike's family.  His passing came as a terrible shock to me, and although I had not seen him for several years, I recall with a smile all the times we worked together and all the fun times we shared.  He was always one to offer an interesting side to life. RIP Mike.

So many fond memories of Mike. We first met when I moved to Charleswood in 1969. For many years it was Mike, Rob, and myself discovering our world together. I hadn't seen Mike in a lot of years but did think of him from time to time. I had always hoped that we would get to meet again before something like this happened. The stories I could tell about Mike bring a smile to my face reflecting now as I write this. Back then we did a lot of fun, stupid things. Mike, you are sorely missed by this old friend. My condolences to your family and friends.

My thoughts are with the Emberley family at this sad time.  Many, many great memories of Mike….   “Fire Master and a great friend he was.  Always a character to be around.  He made me smile…Hanging out, camping trips, Folk Fest, dog walks, dinners and great times with my girls Jamie Lee and Jessica.  He spoiled them rotten and spent meaningful time with them… always on their side.😂.   He will be dearly missed and we love you Michael.  Rest easy!💔🧡

So many good memories of Mike. We hung out constantly when we lived in wpg. Camping at Hecla.  Folk fest. Played Risk almost every wknd.  Drank way too many Mexican flags.  He had that impish grin and infectious laugh. We shared many laughs together.  RIP Mike. Gone too soon. Sincere condolences to Mike's family.  ❤❤

The world is less of a place without Mike Emberley in it. He was gruff and challenging but once you got past all that you couldn’t know a warmer, more caring individual. When we were at Air Canada Mike was talking about purchasing a Tea house. I wish he would have done that. I’m glad the picture I took with the machine gun made it into the obituary. I left Canada in 2015 and called him now and then. I didn’t realize how much I would miss him until I realized we could never talk again. I know he has transcended this world and is one with the cosmos now. Good luck in your travels my friend. May we meet again one day.

I first met Mike about 25 years ago through the Court family. Our paths often crossed but the Folk Fest is where we spent the most time together. and over the years I began to refer to Mike as “my folk fest hubby”.   I am so going to miss you Mike-your smile, wicked sense of humour and side hugs. RIP My deepest condolences to Mike’s family and friends
