Obituary Photo

HENRI JOHN ENNS

August 26, 1933 – September 5, 2025

After a rough patch of a summer, health-wise, we are sad and also relieved to announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend.

Henri Enns was born and raised in a large Mennonite family in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he was educated, had a successful career, made a family, and enjoyed a busy musical and social life.

He was an inspiring teacher, guidance councillor, principal, and professor, and in music - folk, classical and musical theatre - he shone as professional singer, soloist, conductor, and director, leading church choirs, including First Mennonite, and featuring in shows on CBC, and live with his trio, the Three-Part Invention, and at the legendary Hollow Mug. To his family and friends, he was also a generous host of gatherings large and larger, and a consummate story-teller, always ready to tease the children with stories like ‘Never upon a time’ and regale us all with his larger-than-life escapades.

Henri’s friend circles included his church and theatre communities, singing days, choirs, travels, curling, bridge, chess, principal’s club, and neighbours, and folks from round his second great love, (after wife Marie), his Ironhorse ranch, where he got to play pretend farmer.

Henri was to the end an extraordinary presence; to be near him was to have your life made a little extraordinary too, always ready with a great sense of humour and a penchant for sharing and creating memorable experiences in good times and a source of unwavering support, care, and generosity in difficult ones.

Henri was predeceased by his brothers, Ernst, Sig, John and Harry; and sisters, Marlese and Selma; his mates and mentors in life. He is survived by his wife Marie Enns (nee Malcolm); his daughters, Cathleen Enns (husband Tom Monteyne), Susanne Sigurdson (husband Al Sigurdson), Nancy Enns (husband David Glavina); and unofficially-adopted sons, nephew Andrew Enns and Evasio Murenzi; grandchildren, Kiera Sigurdson (husband Matt Wolfe), Teja Penner (husband Tyler Penner), Boden Sigurdson (partner Lindsay Jampole), Vanya Monteyne, Alëna Monteyne (partner Pascal Toupin), Henry Glavina, Nathan Glavina, Sophie Brandt Murenzi, and Malika Brant Murenzi; and great grandchildren, Léo, Freya, Liam, Nina, Saxon, Remi, and Nelle; and cousin Hugo Unruh; and a great number of great and beloved nephews and nieces, their spouses, their children, and children’s children.

A celebration of life will be held at First Mennonite Church at 920 Notre Dame on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Faspa to follow. For those unable to attend, the event will be livestreamed on the church's website.

In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

We would like to sincerely thank all the nurses, doctors, and staff at the Saint Boniface Hospital, for their great care and for their allowing us to fill his final days with love, laughter, and song.

Henri was a wonderful man. He was larger than life and shared his stories in such a grandiose manner that he captivated you from his first syllable!! Henri and Marie were very kind to allow us to spend many weekends and New Years Eve's at the ranch with Al and Suzanne and the kids!! We have so many wonderful memories from our time there!! I can still see Henri sitting on his porch at the ranch having a drink and thoroughly enjoying his surroundings. He was at peace there.

Rest in peace dear Henri!! Condolences to all the family!! xoxo

A few months back while visiting at Lindenwood Manor, Henri took me to his study and shared this poem with me:

Crossing the Bar
By Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

I set my life to this mans beat. When, as my principal (Sargent Park) and living in the inner city, he told me about retiring and having a "hobby farm". I had no idea what that was. He also said privately to me " He was a Christian." This made me curious and made me want one too and to be ONE! Thank you Mr. Enns, I never gave up my dream and, because of your kind guidance, (I have thought of you very often) I now have a hobby farm, I am a Christian and I am raising my 5 children, with my wife, near Roseisle, MB. I only went to that school for a short time, but His impact is still felt to this day! Thank you again Mr. Enns for the encouraging words and guidance.

Nicole and I are very sorry for this loss and are overjoyed with a flood of loving memories and connections our families have shared over the past 60 years. Nicole and I grew up with many parties and gatherings at our homes and at the Ranch with the Enns’. We had VIP access to the backstage of the Hollow Mug to listen in on Henri’s pre- and post-show shenanigans. While it was definitely not cool for an 11-year old to be close family friends with the principal, Henri never made it awkward for me in junior high, although I could have used some extra grades in music.

Most importantly, Henri was Dad’s best friend. He was Dad’s best man and sang at (and hosted the reception) for our parents’ wedding. And thirty years later (to the day) he flew to Ottawa to sing at Nicole’s wedding. Dad was one third of that incredibly successful trio The Three Part Invention and Henri sang with Dad on those CBC shows and (with Nicole too) in countless shows at the Mug. Dad kept his horse for a few years at the famous Ranch, which led to regular rides and weekend afternoons on the plains pretending to be singing cowboys together, or at least Henri allowing my Dad to live out his childhood dreams. In the later years, Henri and Dad were the founding members of the notorious Wednesday breakfast club with the boys, roaming high and low weekly through remote Winnipeg neighborhoods searching for breakfast under $5.

Before our parents moved from Winnipeg in 2021, I took them over to Churchill Dr for a visit. It was a wonderful afternoon with too much food and even more laughs, stories, tall tales and memories. It was a very tough goodbye for us all. The smell of his pipe, his warm smile, and sound of his soothing voice will be with us always.

Heartfelt condolences to Marie and the entire family! I will make mention of only one memory forever etched in my mind. The 3 Part Invention were rehearsing at my house. My dad (Herb) was in the group alongside Henry and Don Milne. I was very young and it was bed time. As I made my way upstairs, Mr. Enns kissed my hand. I swore upside down and backwards that I would NEVER wash my hand, ever again! I was in serious puppy love!

I am profoundly sad hearing of his passing.

Henri was an amazing principal and had a gift to make staff connect with one another and become a family. This is what I remember vividly. It was my first year teaching in 1977 at River Heights Junior High and even through the challenges of two new administrators and many, many new teachers that first year (12 I believe) he led us all with wisdom, kindness and grace. The friends I made in those years are my friends to this day! He introduced musicals to the school and staff and students participated and loved it! As a staff member, I sewed hundreds of costumes and became totally enthralled with the musical productions. He was always a kind and caring person, so approachable. I remember staff parties at his house and his beautiful kind wife who made us all feel welcome as well. We went as a staff to hear him sing at the Hollow Mug- our staff in those years, became a family Henri also kept in contact with me when I moved out of the city for 5 years and I will never forget this kindness. Years later, when I became a principal, I followed his ways of caring and the belief that in the school, we are a staff family working for the same purpose. He was a wonderful, kind human being and i count myself fortunate to have known him.

Henri became the trusted voice in so many musicals with the Internationals and major choral performances.

Henri's Principal time at Sargent Park enabled new programs and solid teaching for thousands of students during his tenure and the decades after.

My memories of Henri are from him being the choir leader @ Rosedale United Church. He introduced music that was fun and challenging. He had faith in every choir member and even incouraged me to try out for a part at the International Inn's Hollow Mug Theater and to help me with that Henri and Marie had me over to their house to practice, even though they had very busy life's . Henri sang at my wedding in 1973. These memories of Henri I believe helped me be the person I am today and I will always be thankful for that. My condolences go out to Marie and their family.

Henri was one of my principals at Sargent Park school. He was my leader, mentor and friend.

I will always remember and treasure his first day at Sargent Park as he casually sat in front of the staff and told us that

" forgiveness was easier to get than permission " " If you want to do something do it." If it doesn't work out,

I will have your back".

During my teaching career I never heard that from another administrator.

Rest in peace Henri.
