HELEN ILONA ENYINGI

September 4, 1935 – August 7, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce that Helen (nee Takacs Ilona) passed away on August 7th at the age of 85 years.  She was gifted with a long and healthy life, only becoming ill in the final few months.  She was predeceased by her grandparents, Imre Boldiszar and Novak Viktoria; parents, Takacs Sandor and Imre Anna; siblings, Kara Margit and Takacs Jozsef; and Lajos, her husband of 50 years. She is survived by her daughter Julie (Lynn) and family and friends in Canada and Hungary.

Helen was born and raised on the family farm in Papoc, Hungary where she lived until moving to Budapest as a young adult.  She was the youngest of three children, and was much loved by her parents, grandparents and siblings.  In spite of the difficult times in Europe during her early years, Helen enjoyed a peaceful and joyful life with her family.  She met Lajos while both were working in Budapest, and they married in April of 1956.  Soon thereafter, the Revolution in Hungary occurred and they decided to leave the country. They were forever grateful for the opportunity to start anew in Canada.

Moving to a new country was not without its challenges but they worked diligently to embrace all the changes.  They learned a new language, worked hard at their jobs and found support among new friends. They settled in Winnipeg and were soon thrilled to welcome their daughter as they began their new life together.

Helen worked as a hairdresser, eventually establishing her own salon.  She later went on to work at Temro until her retirement.  During her life, Helen was a superb cook and baker, indulging her family with many Hungarian dishes and pastries.  She enjoyed needlework, and produced several lovely pieces that have become family heirlooms.  Helen loved plants and flowers and her garden was the envy of the neighbourhood.   She was especially proud of her hydrangeas.  Helen and Lajos also built the family cottage where they enjoyed many wonderful summers together.  She was known for her love of animals and the family pets were much loved and spoilt.  She and Lajos worked hard for many years and successfully created a full and happy life in Canada.

It was Helen’s wish that no formal service be held.  We kindly request that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Helen’s memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society or Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre.

Emléked szívünkben örökké él.

Julie and Lynn, What a lovely photo-biography! Helen really aged well as we would meet her out and about at the grocery store where she walked with her pull cart. Her love of animals was apparent, she welcomed neighborhood dogs into her yard and always had a special treat for them. Her hours in the back yard were spent feeding the birds and watching them make use of her bird bath. She loved classical music, and if it was playing in our house she would ask me to "turn it up". She was pleased to share photos and stories of her extended family in Hungary. She was very proud of you Julie. Friday was her Happy Day with you and Lynn. Our sympathies to you both. She is missed.  Janice Dobson
