Karin Erhardt

KARIN ERHARDT
June 7, 1958 – September 27, 2024
Musician, cellist, pianist, teacher, dog lover, lifelong (almost) ethical vegetarian, chocolate afficionado.
Karin was born two weeks later than expected (perhaps a sign of her lifelong shyness) on June 7, 1958 in Winnipeg. She departed about 20 years earlier than she expected on September 27, 2024, due to a 4-year misadventure with ovarian cancer.
Karin’s career began with a stint as principal cellist of the Windsor Symphony in Ontario. Coming back to roost in Winnipeg, she led a busy and varied life as a freelance cellist performing frequently with the WSO, MTC and Warehouse Theatre, Rainbow Stage, MTYP, MCO, Canzona, and most fondly, 20 years with Musik Barock, under the direction of Erik Lussier. She also probably played for several of your friends’ and relatives’ weddings.
As a teacher of private lessons and as a piano accompanist, Karin greatly enjoyed her yearly mixed bag of students, aged 6 to 80. Karin spent 9 years teaching in the WSO sponsored Sistema program, which offered free music instruction to young students in underserved communities. There she learned far more from her budding musicians than she could impart to them.
~ ~ ~
To my family, thanks for keeping me afloat during my misadventure and more so for putting up with me in my even crankier times. Those teen years lasted well into my 20s!! You are my lifeboat.
To my great pals, musicians and otherwise, heartfelt thanks for the wonderful string quartet/ smorgasbord sessions (when my fingers were numb from chemo), the flowers, dog walking, books, snow shovelling, home cooked meals, incredible hugs and wonderful companionship.
Much gratitude to Dr. Sarah Kean and the team at CancerCare St. Boniface. Each and every one from reception, to all the doctors, NPs, nurses and aides, made this misadventure more tolerable and even interesting (you might as well learn something if you have to experience it).
Finally, thanks to the caring MAiD team for helping to make my exit more graceful than it might otherwise have been.
~ ~ ~
Karin has joined her beloved dog Sami. In accordance with her wishes, no formal service will be held. If anyone feels inclined to make a donation to a local animal rescue/ shelter or CancerCare Manitoba, Karin will try to send an ethereal hug of thanks.
Karin’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Karin was a gentle and compassionate teacher, full of warmth and softness. There was something about her that made you want to work hard, without her having to be tough or rigid about things. She just had a deep intelligence and passion in her eyes, and you wanted to aspire to something better, when you were in her presence. She had a heart of gold and a love of dogs and music and I cherished my hours with her in her home. I also loved to watch her perform on stage, back in the days of Musikbarock Ensemble. I was so sad to find out she had died. I would have loved to run into her and give her a hug, and let her know how much she meant to me. So the least I can do is write out my memory of her here. Sending my heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones.

I am so sadden to read this. Karin's passion for music and the cello filled me with a life time of music - both playing music and a deep appreciation for it. As a young student of Karin's, her quiet encouragement and patience was unique gift to all of us. Thinking of her family, the deep loss to the music community, and all those Karin touched in her life.

What sad news to stumble on belatedly. I have not lived in Winnipeg for many years, but Karin's purple house and all the beauty she created inside it with her cello students is a favourite memory of growing up there. I picked up the cello as a teenager and Karin's guidance had just the right mix of fun, humour, and rigor for me. She cultivated not just excellent technique, but passion, artistry, and above all, joy. That's what it's all about. I remember also her kindness, her wit, and her love for Alex (and all dogs), for her wonderful mom, and for her students. How tragic that her life was cut short, but how amazing to contemplate the joy and beauty she created while she was here.

I had the priviledge of knowing Karin for almost 25 years, when my daughter started cello lessons. A few years after she stopped lessons I decided to give it a try and couldn't have asked for a more wonderful teacher, always so patient and encouraging.
I valued the lessons but also appreciated the chats and friendship that developed. I have so much respect for Karin- she lived her life with grace and dignity, always thoughtful and generous of spirit. She was so kind and caring with her older students but also related well with the younger crew. Karin made the world a more beautiful place, sharing her music with students and professionally.
I'm grateful for visits with Karin since she stopped teaching. Her sense of humour, intelligence, and interest in the world continued to shine through and her wise and philosophical approach to life and to her illness were an inspiration.
My heartfelt condolences go out to her family. She will be missed!

Together with my daughter, I had the privilege of taking cello lessons from Karin. Every week, over 7 years, we made our way to her home and were always warmly welcomed by her and Sami. Karin was so patient with me as an adult learning cello. Having her in my life made me a better person – her way of seeing the world, her humor, her care of the earth, her ways of giving into the world. I am better for having had her in my life, and the world is a better place for having had her in it. The way she moved through these years of her misadventure with cancer challenged me to be brave, to live well, to love well, to receive each day as a gift, to keep my sense of humor no matter what, and to try to be a gift in other people’s lives. I feel so honored to have had her in my life.

Our sincere condolences to the Erhardt family from the Fox sisters on Rothesay. We have many fond memories of your family . Karin greatly resembles her lovely mother. We remember the traditional German celebrations which as children we particularly marveled including birthday party cakes with hidden coins. Karin's love of dogs comes naturally as we think back to Prince a much loved German Shepherd.
We extend sincere condolences to your family.

We admired our talented and witty cousin Karin. As the "little cousins from the country", we did not have the opportunity to grow up alongside of her. Nevertheless, we always enjoyed the visits that we had. We remember her sharing many funny stories - like the one when she bought a plane seat for her cello. To us that was amazing as we had never flown anywhere but her cello had and in its own seat! We shared a love of dogs with Karin and Aunt Ursula. And we will always remember her beautiful performances at our weddings. We truly hope that you are in resting in peace Karin.

I just heard the sad news about Karin Erhardt’s passing and it brought back fond memories of our time together in the late 80s as members of the new music ensemble, Thira. It was an exciting period in our careers when contemporary music found a captive audience in Winnipeg. This picture was taken by photographer, Paul Martens.
Karin’s impact on the music community will be felt for many years to come. She made the world a better place. I will always remember her inquisitive and caring nature for the people around her and the deep respect she had for the environment.

I met Karin through Val Paape and, over the years, I came to deeply appreciate Karin's sense of humour and her sensibility. I am a cat person, but Karin and her dogs were always welcome to stop by on their walks through the neighbourhood. I loved seeing her on stage with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. I will remember Karin with great fondness. May her spirit soar.

I am honoured to have known Karin. not only was she a great musician but she was a sweet and kind person. Karin accompanied our daughter Liana for many recitals and it was always a joy to come over to her house to sit on the sidelines (as her dog would keep me company on the couch) as she coached, instructed and lovingly encouraged Liana to play her best on the violin. I also appreciated her undivided attention whenever I would talk to her about some exciting new discovery on the music of Vivaldi.
Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family.
You will be missed.

Karin and I have been neighbours for over thirty years and bonded over dogs initially. I live at one end of the block, she on the other. We would meet on our regualr dog walks, or I would pop in to her yard while passing and we would sit and chat. That expanded to include supper invites from both of us and food exchanges. We were gifted more than once by Karin with tickets to musical events including Rainbow Stage where she was honoured for her many years as a concert musician there. Karin was kind, generous, funny and compassionate. After losing her beloved Sami and in the midst of arduous Cancer treatments she volunteered at a pet rescue, often bringing home dogs in need of some loving attention. She was incredibly brave and stoic and I will miss her very much. My heartfelt condolences to her family.

I met Karin almost 40 years ago as a fellow string player. We performed together frequently and became good friends. Years later, she was an inspiring and fun cello teacher for our son, Zander, and also taught him piano. For over twenty years, Karin was the collaborative pianist for my violin and viola students, coaching them through competitions, festivals, and exams with excellent musical advice, encouragement, and humour. They learned so much from her.. We are grateful for our wise, warm, and courageous friend. Deepest sympathy to Ursula, Kurt, and Christina on the loss of your beloved Karin.

Dear Karin, how do I even begin to explain what you meant to me. We met almost thirty years ago when my noisey family moved in next to you. Then we added our dog Dave who became friends with your Alex until she decided he had grown to big and brutish. We had many adventures together in life , some beautiful some not so beautiful, but you are my longest significant relationship. We have had many long talks hashing things over. Throught it all you remained unwaveringly loyal . Always kind, incredibly witty and warm. I can't imagine you not in your purple house. I will deeply miss your friendship and your soft, sweet fierce energy.. I am grateful that I had you in my life for as long as I did. And to her loving family, I am so very sorry for the loss of your beautiful daughter and sister. She will be deeply missed by so many. So long my dear friend.

I had the absolute luck to be Karin's student when at the ripe old age of 38 I decided to take up the cello. Karin humoured me when I brought in the Bach Cello Suites and told her I wanted to play these pieces. Instead, she suggested I start with Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars. She was right! I was not the best at practicing and confessed every week when I showed up for my lessons. In my 12 years of knowing her, that weekly lesson was one of the best parts of my week. I truly was in the moment when I was in her presence. She made me forget anything that troubled me and it was a blessing to have those pure joyful moments. Sami was a great addition to the lesson and didn't seem to mind my less than desired squeaks from my cello. Listening to Karin play often brought tears to my eyes. Her love of music was so evident and I consider it a gift that I had time with her. As of late she changed my mind about a particular composer and I told her that was a major feat! I will miss her humour and her friendship. She will remain one of my favourite people. To her family, may her memory be a blessing. She certainly was a blessing to me.

Karin: wonderful colleague (especially remembering my years with you in Musik Barock and the Amaryllis Ensemble); dedicated teacher (thank you for teaching our son Sean); sense of humour always popping out; open; honest; courageous in difficult, painful times. How characteristic to call ovarian cancer a "misadventure" and an opportunity for learning. We're inspired by your life and grateful to have known you.

It was so sad to learn of Karin's passing. She was such an integral part of fostering and furthering the love of music- making in the hearts of children over so many years in Winnipeg. Her young cellists in the Winnipeg Youth Strings Orchestra were always enthusiastic and well-trained. Karin is part of my musical family tree: first my teacher, then friend and colleague. She introduced me to Danse Rustique (Squire), When I'm 64 (The Beatles) and so much more music. In lessons, she was FUN: serious but not too serious, smart and witty, always open to a new idea or point of view. She travelled weekly to Morden to teach cello lessons, for which so many in my home community were grateful. I admired her generosity - always quick to support and encourage. Thank you, Karin!
