​PERRY LEROY EXLEY

With heavy hearts, we announce that Perry passed away on May 28th, 2022, at Calvary Place Personal Care Home in Winnipeg at the age of 78 years.

​

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anna; children Christopher (Tracy) and Warren Trevor; brothers Howard Exley, David Enns, and Glen Fast. He is predeceased by his mother Lillie, father Percy, and brother Murray.

​

Perry was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and was the oldest of his brothers. He worked for Transport Canada for the better part of three decades and retired just as privatization of his area began in the mid-90s. He was initially trained as an electronics technician and had a short military career before joining the government.

​

Perry lived all over Canada, including Saskatoon, BC’s Lower Mainland, Ottawa, Toronto, and Winnipeg. He and his wife Anna loved to travel and went on several trips each year after retiring. They especially liked going to Hawaii and taking river cruises in Europe, travelling with siblings from both sides of the family. Perry enjoyed listening to music and watching musicals, especially The Beatles, John Lennon, Sarah Brightman, Josh Groban, and Les Misérables. He also liked watching sports and was a big curling and CFL fan, attending a game in nearly every stadium in Canada.

Perry and his brothers ended up in Children’s Aid when he was only five. As time passed, the brothers were split up, and one was lost track of completely. Thankfully, he was able to reconnect with two brothers. Uncovering the family’s genealogy was a driving factor in Perry’s life, and he travelled extensively to research many leads (including multiple trips to the US and UK where he connected with extended family previously unknown). Perry also spent a great deal of time tracking down his lost brother, which he finally did just before Murray’s passing. Perry’s efforts also resulted in locating and connecting with his younger half-brother Glen.

Perry was always interested in technology and was a very early adopter of the personal computer. This trait greatly influenced the career paths of his sons. While some people find tracking their finances and taxes a chore, he was always diligent at tracking every penny (even using pencils on paper ledgers) like it was a religion. Perry spent much of his post-retirement time volunteering (or taking low-paying work) for good causes. Some examples are becoming the treasurer for the local computer club, being an executor of wills, working the polls as a returning officer for countless federal and provincial elections, and going door to door for several national censuses (including travelling to Calgary to help out).

Unfortunately, Perry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in late 2015, which eventually landed him in a personal care home. The family would like to thank everyone on the 3rd floor at Calvary Place for the excellent care they provided. Donations honouring Perry’s can be made to Parkinson’s Canada.

While the starting and ending years of his life were filled with challenges outside of his control, he without a doubt made the most of the time in between. Everyone that knew him was the better for it.

​

Perry was always there for his family (both immediate and extended). His generosity, kindness, patience, thoughtfulness, compassion, helpfulness, and selflessness will be missed by everyone lucky enough to have met him.

​

In Accordance with his wishes, cremation/burial has taken place and no formal service will be held.

​
