RUTH DOROTHY JUNE FENNELL

13 January 1928 – 02 January 2026

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Ruth who left us peacefully on January 2nd, 2026 just days short of her 98th birthday. Born in Winnipeg on January13th, 1928, the 6th child of 9 Carroll siblings.

Ruth was active in the music programs while in high school and afterward in the Kelvin Grads Girls Choir. Upon graduating high school, Ruth was employed as a clerk at Schumacher-MacKenzie Electrical and Mackie Travel.

In the spring of 1947, she met Donald Fennell and on October 16th, 1948 they were married. Over the years Don and Ruth found that their interests encompassed numerous activities. The early years were taken up with roller skating, dancing, bicycle riding, skiing, swimming and tennis. Later on these interests gave way to activities that included quilting, cross stitching, knitting, sewing, embroidery, reading, travel, puzzling, genealogy and singing in the St. Vital Age and Opportunity Group Choir.

After starting their family, she worked as secretary at various schools including Norberry and Darwin schools until her retirement in 1983. In the 1960s, she served as Brown Owl for a local chapter of Brownies and was heavily involved in the administration of St. Mark’s Anglican Church for many years.

Ruth was predeceased by Donald who passed just this past October. She is survived by daughter Susan (Jim), son Craig (Brenda), daughter Maureen (predeceased by Hubert) and six grandchildren: Scott (Christina), Ashley (Regan), Christopher (Erin), Heather (Jeremy), Jeffrey, Dean and great-grandson James. She is also predeceased by her siblings Joyce, Harriet, Jean, George, Inez, Robert and Marjorie and survived by her brother Gerry.

She will be remembered for her kindness, crafting and sewing skills – many of which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.

We are grateful to the staff at the Charleswood Care Center for the excellent care they provided over these last few months.

There will be no service at this time - in lieu of a formal memorial service, Ruth’s wish was for each of us to remember and celebrate her life in their own private way.

Aunt Ruth was a special person to Sharryn and I. She touched our lives in many ways.

Ruth and I spent many hours on the phone when we were researching the Carroll family tree. Ruth made Sharryns going away outfit and altered her wedding dress.

There was never a time we did not enjoy visiting Ruth and Don.

Our condolences..

Jimmy and Sharryn
